Discontinue is too harsh a word for this great console. "Retire" is more the word. Retire it as the greatest console ever(but eventually surpassed by the PS3).

I hear what some of you are saying about them focusing more on the ps3.

But at the same time, why throw away your previous console if it's still making such good profit?

In my opinion.. if they discontinued the PS2, it would force people to buy a Wii or Xbox 360 as well as a PS3. I think they should wait for one more price drop, THEN discontinue if it's in the cards.

That way, the PS3 would seem even more appealing to people trying to save a buck. ;-B

No, the PS2 is still in demand. discontinuing the PS2 not only will it not bring new gamers into the Playstation platform, but it will risk SCEA to remain in the red. the PS2 is pumping revenue towards SCE while the PS3 is still attempting to be profitable by the end of this fiscal year. plus new gamers who would by into a ps2 today, would most likely by a PS3 in the future when there is a price cut. and besides, by kill the PS2 when it sells about approximately 200,000 units PER MONTH in the US alone? that's ludicrous! plus the 10 year run that sony promised on the PS2 isnt done yet we are still at YEAR 8.

another thing to add is that the PS2 has potential to compete with the wii, all sony has to do is upgrade the controller. when you think about it, both consoles (the wii and the PS2) have the same graphics capabilities with the wii have small gpu advantage over the PS2. Gameplay wise, the wii has the wii mote. the PS2 can have that same capability if sony upgrades a DS2 to a motion controller and pack it in a box. and BTW, the multiplatform games that are on the wii are PS2 ports(i am not saying all of them just in case)

if there is a Huge forseeable price cut in the future on the PS3 (say a $100 price cut) and those new gamers who were thinking about jumping towards a PS2 just skips to a PS3 because of that huge price cut, then sony should discontinue it if the sales start getting slow.

South America and South Asia/India so No they shouldn't discontinue the PS2. They should add backwards compatability to all PS3's and discontinue the PS2 after the PS4 is set to come out (with full PS1/PS2/PS3 backwards compatability.)

Its sells damn near as many units as the 360 on a weekly basis.

they should keep selling it. It makes sony money, that they can then spend on expensive PS3 exclusives, like killzone 2.

At least we can tell that from psat experience thye will keep supporting the PS3 for many years to come, making the initial expensivness of it not so bad.

If they stop selling the PS2 early, they may do the same with the PS3, which is not a good thing.

Also, people that would have got a PS2 may get a Wii or a 360 arcade instead as they are the next cheapest thing, which means less chance of them buying a PS3 in the long run, which means less support from third parties as a lower install base

Why would Sony discontinue the system that is selling 250k/ month in the US alone that is basically 90% profit at this point? Every PS2 sold is money going towards first party PS3 development.

The PS2 is a great system; it is very profitable and appeals to an entirely different audience than the PS3. Do you really think that someone who was planning to spend £80 on a PS2 would suddenly switch to a £300 PS3?

The PS2 is one of the greatest systems ever and it is useful for Sony to continue to spread the PlayStation brand to poor countries and non gamers in the west. When the PS2 hits a price of about £200 then it is a different story but until then let something that can sell well do what it does.

But asking if I think Sony should be using E3 and te like to promote the PS2 is a different matter; the market for the PS2 is not at E3 and should not be treated like it is.

They shouldn't because if i wanna buy games like Buzz, SingStar and so on, i would buy a ps2 for them, because its much smaller and cheaper.

Especially if Sony is still making a loss on every Ps3 sold.

On topic: ridiculous idea, as long as there is a demand for a cheap mainstream system they should sell it. The whole idea that you would somehow 'force' people to by your premium system if you deny them the entry system is so unreal that one has to wonder what is in the hollow shells sitting on top the necks of the kingps3's 'writers'

Right now the PS2 is the cheap entry drug to get future customers hooked on games like Buzz, Singstar and God of war. Games you will only find on the Playstation brand as its produced inhouse. Therefor its more likely that these customers will buy a PS3 instead of another system when the system gets closer to the $200 range.

Keep the PS2! It's still a great system with a huge library of games.

The ps2 is the only reason why the gaming division is making money. It would be stupid to discontinue it.

They should still keep it for as long as possible. It's still selling well and could help pay for the PSN servers.

Sony is smart with their consoles they will keep them for 10 years and then retire them. And they also want the most successful platform available at the time. When the PS2 first came out ppl didn't think it would be great just like the PS3 so keeping the old consoles available for a while is a good idea.

1. This is a business decision. Sony will have crunched the numbers. The short version being. PS3 = No Profit at the moment. PS2 = Lots of Profit! Cutting support for the PS2 now won't force those people to buy a much higher priced device (PS3), and it could lead to sales for Nintendo or Microsoft who both have a lower priced options.

2. The best time for Sony to start converting PS2 to PS3 owners is when the PS3 is profitable. The PS2 is still selling well, and chances are those PS2 will migrate to PS3 in 3-5 years time. That keeps PS3 sales chugging along nicely.

3. If anything Microsoft's strategy of cutting support for the XBox may have lost it a few sales. I was seriously annoyed with MS for doing this, and although I bought a 360 on launch, I am now extremely wary of MS doing the same again - if they do, I won't be buying the Next XBox.

It should not be discontinued until the PS3 is fully capable of playing PS2 games. The last thing Sony would want to do is alienate the PS2 fan base in anyway

Once games like Socom and God of War 3 come out expect a huge switch from PS2 to PS3.
Ofcourse those 2 games are just an appetizer to get PS2 owners to switch to PS3.
I give the PS2 another 2 years then it'll be purely PS3 only.

This guy is a moron. If Sony had discontinued the PS2 when they launched the PS3 they would have been screwed as the PS3 was far to expensive and people would not have made the jump. 2nd the PS2 still have great games coming out and Persona 4. 3rd The PS2 is very old and still sells it probably costs next to nothing for Sony to produce a PS2 at this point in time so therefore they are most likely making a very good profit on the PS2 and seeing as Sony's prime goal is to make money that's what they are gonna do.

I personally don't play my PS2 anymore because of my ps3 but others who still want a PS2 are still out there so no... They shouldn't discontinue the ps2.

So Sony should cut off a good revenue stream, to force people to buy a more expensive product that they sale at a loss or are just possibly breaking even on? If you going to make such a suggestion at least include a comprehensive analysis of how Sony could do such a thing and end up in a more positive financial position than they are now. The PS3 is selling just fine now, profitability is what is important not winning some imagined console war.

As long as the PS2 sells well and has new content coming out it would be dumb to discontinue it. As E3 showed, Sony plans to keep both PSP, PS2 and PS3 alive and kicking.

The original xbox had no life left, and MS needed to focus on the 360 to make that a success. Sony neither needs to do this, or wants to screw those who has bought a PS2 over like MS did...

Actually I don't think I have sold a new PS2 since last Christmas. I have sold some used PS2's, but that is about it.

I have had a few people trade in their ps2 and then put it towards a PS3.

I do have to say that I love my 20GB PS3, not a problem since launch. Although the frequent installations are becoming a hassle, I guess it's time to upgrade the HDD.

If they drop the price to $99.00, I think it could easily sell AT LEAST another 5 million systems. So I say no they shouldn't.

They can still sell PS2's and focus their efforts on the PS3 ya know!

I love my PS3 and I also love my 360, but the simple, short answer to this question can be summed up in one simple sentence. "Not everybody can afford HDTVs and not everyone can afford a PS3".

The PS2 is the most established home console to date with the largest variety of games for the most reasonable price. It's simply the most economical choice to make if choosing a new console.

Another reason why this isn't a hot idea is because it could potentially hurt the Playstation brand itself. How would you like it if you bought a Playstation, expecting it to last 10 yrs, and found out that 5 years later that Sony was discontinuing it. the Sony brand is all about reliability guaranteed, but I guess this guy didn't research first before making this article.

I say wait until 2009 and then discontinue. By that time there will be plenty of games and many people will start buying the PS3's, thats the time to discontinue it, when PS3 starts to sale like hotcakes.
