I love Rare's past, but I'm still worried for its future. They ruined the remake of Diddy Kong Racing on the DS and sequel to Banjo Kazooie on 360. Playtonic is the real dev to carry on the original Rareware spirit.

christocolus3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

I don't think fans have anything to worry about. Kameo, Viva Pinata, kinect Sports 1 and 2 , Grabbed by the Ghoulies were all great Xbox Games made by Rare. Banjoe Kazooie:Nuts and Bolts wasn't a direct sequel to Banjoe Tooie. Playtonic is made up of former Rare guys but it doesn't mean the Rare we know today lacks good talent either. The old guys can always be replaced by new guys and we still have Greg Mayles and a couple of the old guys still at Rare and going by the short in game trailer of Sea of Thieves its obvious they haven't lost their identity. They've got their creative freedom back and we are going to see them evolve and try new things. There is more than enough room for Playtonic and Rare in the industry and i'm sure both studios will do just fine.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3973d ago

Yeah that is if you started playing Rare games during Xbox 360

FallenAngel19843973d ago

Grabbed by the Ghoulies is one of Rare's worst games ever. Even the developer themselves acknowledged that. Also Kinect Sports seriously? That's just even further proof of how low the prolific dev fell. Nuts and Bolts is a direct sequel.

The developer has dramatically fallen, people have lost faith in them. Its best to look at what they were before the acquisition

_-EDMIX-_3973d ago

Agreed. I don't worry too much about the studios future as I think they will be fine, but clearly they won't ever be like the last team.

Playtonic is where you will find those classic Rare concepts truly come to life! The original devs no doubt will do a fine job with Yooka-Laylee, been loving what I saw from that game.

But Rare currently with Sea Of Thieves looks fantastic! Its not old school Rare and will never be that, but they are a fine time in their own right. I personally liked Viva Pinata and feel those games where their only great work last gen, didn't care for much of the content they released after.

God I don't want them doing Kinect junk, just make Sea Of Thieves, Viva Pinata 3 and live life! lol

@Chirsto- I see nothing of old Rare in Sea Of Thieves, I see old Rare in Yooka Laylee easily.

Sea Of Thieves just doesn't strike me as a Rare game, but thats not a bad thing, its something else entirely and thats great. I grow tired of watching them try over and over to be like old Rare and fail.

Just make your new concept and ideas and call it a day, that team will never be like the old Rare. Sea Of Thieves is very much showing that too.

"They've got their creative freedom back" Yes and no. They did great stuff with Viva Pinata and I thought it was really fun and unique, but yes over the years I would say they lacked that creative freedom being stuck doing certain games.

Glad to see that team make a new concept that is actually different. Sea Of Thieves is one of the games I'm looking forward to hearing the most about.

Oh really? The same "classic" devs....who worked at Rare until 2014 and wait for it......worked on Nuts and Bolts aswell.

mastershredder3973d ago

It will never be the same Rare. Those days, just like the good old Lucasarts days are toast.

RedDevils3973d ago

Rare is like the Crash bendicoot developer version. Back in the day it was good, now it keep get worst and worst with every release

Banjo Kazooie : Nuts and Bolts was an ambitious looking game that made you feel like a tiny insect in its huge world, where only the creation of vehicles could give you power. It looked very pretty and Rare-like but that is a strange, eccentric, kind of sell.

Rare have often liked the eccentric but it's not always necessary to extent that in to the very mechanics of the game for its entire length.

With Sea of Thieves, I'm just wondering if, if Rare had simply done their own spin on an Uncharted-like game, with boat sailing just one of many activities, whether that might have been sufficient.

The opening of Sea of thieves is Uncharted-like in a Rare style, with a skeleton hanging from the trees.

Prior to the announcement, I had an idea of Cooper (or someone who looks similar in a Guybrush Threepwood kind of way) from Grabbed by the ghoulies (fun to play in same chunks- a few additional features such as secret passages and set pieces could have livened up the game a lot) as a Nathan Drake-type adventurer, swinging through vines, sailing in leaking dinghies down rivers, exploring scary underground mines, ending up in haunted buildings similar to Mad Monster Mansion in Banjo Kazooie and with Kinect not in sight. The graphics that they are showing here could have done that justice.

I'd just like to be able to sail to an island and take part in such fun activities- or do so on the hub world.
If you purely want to fight at sea who's to say you won't only get Assasins Creed Black Flag and stick to that.

By the sound of this.

You see some games in one place, some games in multiple places. Just know that we're going to work on that, and we're going to try and be more consistent with what we do.

I think Forza and maybe Clockwork are going to be the last of Xbox/PC then PS5 a few months later. Maybe early access games like Grounded 2 will release on pc/Xbox during early access period and then Ps5 on full release.

Why would I believe anything coming from xbox that involves games or studios. I wouldn't. If it ain't AI, they Ain't Interested.

Lesson number γ: Don't put in years of hard work trying to build a wonderful, loyal, and unique community of users only to ruin it in a short time by turning it into a nest of morons with no principles or sense of community.
Lesson number δ: Don't put marketing people from fashion, banking, or cosmetics companies in charge of your product. They only see monetary results at the end of the season and have no interest in understanding the technology behind it or its services.
There are many lessons that Microsoft fails to learn, which has cost it dearly in cases such as Zune, Clippo, Windows Phone, Windows Vista, and, I would dare say, Activision-Bethesda-King, because at the current rate, they will not recoup their investment for at least another 30 years.

S2Killinit120d ago

Because MS was never and has never been an entertainment company. They didn’t invest in building studios because they thought they could just buy games (that failed), then they thought they could just buy studios (and that backfired). They never thought they should contribute to the art/entertainment part of, you know, making the art (its just not profitable enough for a company the size of MS that looks for a cash cow monopoly)

‘Thanks to everyone who played’: Banjo-Kazooie director confirms Rare exit after 36 years

Gregg Mayles writes: "Today was my last day at Rare Ltd. Thanks to everyone who played and enjoyed any of the games I helped create while I was there. Also thanks to all the people that worked on the games alongside me. It seemed fitting that I should say farewell with one final rhyme!"

These sorts of goodbyes are always the most heart-wrenching.

Not to offend anyone. But what was Rare doing with Everwild for so many years? Development began in 2014, with a reveal in 2019. From 2019 onwards nothing was about the game.

Notellin265d ago

"Notably, O’Connor’s boss of 13 years, former Rare studio head Craig Duncan, was appointed head of Xbox Game Studios last year."

Hiring internal talent from Rare worked out so well last time.
