Batman: Arkham Knight Has A Serious Problem With Women

Gamerant

There’s no denying that Batman: Arkham Knight is an incredibly well-made game. The combat, exploration, and detective mechanics are all as tight as ever and the final installment is one of the best in the series. That said, the game seems to be ages behind in its representation of women.

Game rant? How fitting...

Nitrowolf23981d ago (Edited 3981d ago )

Holy shit, this article
"Batman moves Ivy from one cell to another and keeps her there (hardly dressed, of course) until he needs to use her powers. She acts as a power-up for Batman later in the game, so we do get to see her powers eventually, but it’s not on her own terms. She is removed from prison by the hero, just so he can control her and her powers. This becomes a trend with most of the powerful female characters in the game…"

Excuse me? First off, Batman gives her a choice to save the city. He know's she's the only one that can fight against Scarecrow toxins, and she knows that if she doesn't it'll destroy what she loves the most. The author is blatantly writing it as if it's some sort of Man forcing women to do shit cause he's a man thing.

Sure, Batman was doing it mostly to save the city but he wasn't controlling her or forcing her to do it. He only gave her a situation that's pretty much a win-win for them both. Ivy ends up being a hero so whats the problem?

Catwomen - Batman is just doing what he does and that's saving people. However, if you collected everything and finished the Riddler mission you would know that Catwomen ended up saving Batman in that fight.

Also the whole Oracle and Killing Joke situation is Bullshit to
" Arkham Knight should have noticed from the recent alternate cover debacle that this isn’t a story fans have any interest in revisiting."

Sorry, but a majority of people were highly disappointed in DC decision to remove the cover. It was a Minority with huge vocals that had it removed, and even so The Killing Joke is regarded as some of the best work in the Batman comics. If you want to sit there and say it's completely sexist, fine go ahead, but holy shit when has it become a thing where anything violent towards women is sexist.

Also to add to that, MAJOR SPOILER DOWN BELOW:

So the author objects to the idea of Oracle getting shot in the back, and being kidnapped for one night, but fails to mention the Jason Todd scenes where he is tortured and beaten to death by the Joker for 6 months straight? Okay.

END SPOILER

... not to mention that fact that 99,9% of the enemies Batman beats into a pulp, are MALE.

But hey, let's focus on the 'poor little woman' (a well-known villain throughout Batman's history who has more than enough blood on her hands...) who is being 'used' by the big bad male Batman...(!)

Seriously, these whole 'women are victims' white-knight articles need to stop. None of the women in Batman are by any means WEAK or need protecting. Oracle, Harley Quinn, Batgirl, etc etc... all of them are very strong and iconic female characters.

By continuously playing the whole 'poor women' card in these ridiculous articles, it's basically treating women as less than equal to men.

Bimkoblerutso3981d ago

Yeah, this game was pretty equal opportunity. You don't even have to play half an hour into the game. In the first "complex" area, you're saving a bunch of dudes from Scarecrows' thugs, only to find that three of them have been beaten and killed before Batman could get there.

I don't think the SJW's will be satisfied until every protagonist is a woman, and every woman in every game is never objected to any form of trauma.

LordMaim3981d ago

Maybe once we have 50% of the villains that you beat up and imprison are women, then they'll be happy. Cause obviously the problem is that there aren't ENOUGH women getting victimized. Or wait, maybe there should be no women being beaten up and imprisoned at all. Or would that be sexist because there are no women in the game?

Maybe if the protagonist was a woman and beating up only men that would be good. As long as the main character only wears clothing that isn't revealing yet still feminine, because if the clothing is too masculine it's misogynist and it it's too revealing it's exploitative.

Goddammit. There's just no pleasing some people.

joab7773981d ago

Status quo today. Play a game, find the women, and highlight every little thing that could be construed ad sexist.

Again, I will say. This is fictional. Second, ypu are choosing women with super powers and then saying that they have been made into victims. We all know who catwoman and Ivy are, and their strengths.

It's as if there's a new rule for video games. Must have female characters, and they MUST always be strong and come out on top. They can never be a male' s weakness, or his interest. They must be very smart, and even if they are evil or bad, they must still be shone in a positive light.

Articles like these stink of "agenda" and contribute nothing to anybody. Unless everybody gets in step with the agenda, once they get Politicians, news media and Hollywood wet naps to use their influence. for their gain and try to get the general public to abandon their reasoning skills and just let them do the thinking for you.
ironic, seeing that two of them have lost their ethics 50 years ago and hollywood never had any in the first place.

I think it's funny, the only people seeing these ''gender inequality'' things are the writers of such articles

The rest, both men and women are having a blast with the game.

If anything, it has to do with the narrative, and gameplay design choises by the dev. Im pretty sure there are more than a handful of helpless male characters that need saving as well.
Why? because Batman.

HammadTheBeast3981d ago

People just need a reason to get offended, they won't listen to facts either.

Wingsfan243981d ago

Lol here we go again. Every woman in this game is detrimental to Batman's success in the main story. Articles like this are just junk and are looking to create controversy where there's none.

I can see the Social Marxists are up to their shenanigans again.

I would also add Risk of Rain 2 as long as you don't stray too far from a power source as each run can be long as the hours melt away. Another thing to note is that based on the reports, the FPS may drop into the 40s if a lot of enemies are on the screen.

There is also the Half Life series. If you haven't played half-life before then you can do so now at the super low price.

Mafia was amazing looking and had a great story. Played flawlessly at 30fps as well without dips 99% of the time.

The same is true for Jedi Fallen Order

Sony games as also on sale. Picked up Rachet and Clank, cant wait to try it!
