Is the Xbox One A Better Console Without The Kinect?

Now that the Xbox One has been shipping without the Kinect, is it better off or has it lost out on something?

No. Even if you never play a game with Kinect it's still worth having

Eonjay3971d ago

Please elaborate. It seems pointless to pay for an something that you don't want or have no plan on using with a game. Do you mean like for voice commands?

Kingthrash3603971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

I'll say this ....in terms of it making the Xbox better...it does. It add slightly more features....without it there is no voice commands or Skype and such. But does it add value...no. It's a camera and a mic. Paying and extra 100-150$ isn't worth it at all. The games for it are all bad and without it it isn't really missed. I think it's easier to press a button on the controller than to say Xbox on then press the same button to turn on the controller. It's also easier to navigate the up with the controller rather than fanning air. The kinect is a gimmick...just like the move...am over priced gimmick. It makes the Xbox better in such a minor way...like a pretty girl wearing a bracelet ...the bracelet looks nice and add to her look...but it's an unneeded over priced accessory.

BecauseImBatman3971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

Well Cortana is coming to the Xbox One and ya need a Kinect to support that supposedly. Personally I think you should be able to issue voice commands to your Xbox/Cortana from your mic... I mean that's how it works on phones/Tablets/PC with a simple update, why should it be any different from your Xbox ? Anyway on topic, I don't think the Kinect brings a lot to the Xbox One besides Voice Commands and a camera to video call people on Skype. (I mean nobody buys an Xbox for Kinect Games) It's really just a question if your willing to pay for that novelty...

Kingthrash3603971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

Above.....is cortana gunna Change the batteries in my controller?... She gunna play MK against me talking smack as she kicks my butt with katana? ...or is she gunna sit there next to Siri unused and worthless. Because I have no idea what she has to do with gaming....at all. What, my Xbox gunna have a conversation with me...because I bought my Xbox to drown out conversations with my wife as it is. Now I gotta deal with my Xbox and its problems...I'll trade it back in today if that's the case.lol
No seriously....so what on cortana. Gimme games. She's just another useless addition Trying to give value to a overpriced camera. Literally nobody is hype for this.

zidane13413971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

Voice commands, turning on/off my TV, changing the volume, being able to be in party chat without the cheap headset they package in so I can use my turtle beaches, being able to go to any game or program in the middle of a program (which kinda falls inline with voice commands, but I'm referring to snap and swap instantaneous) so in other words, a lot of features that I personally use all the time and tonot be able to use them is very lame compared.

King thrash, cortanais going to let you look up who's online, send em messages and invites, and has a bunch o gaming features. It's basically a pimped out voice assistant, you can talk to her naturally which is nice not having to use preset dialogue so much. And actually everybody who knows what it does, unlike you, is VERY pumped. And needtoo sound so salty. You literally said yourself you have no idea what she does, and you think your a expert on if people are excited for it??? Lol

mhunterjr3971d ago

Removing kinect makes xb1 cheaper, but it doesn't make it a better console...

EvilWay3971d ago

@Kingthrash

Would rather have batteries them having to charge my controller every 5 hours with a 2 foot wire

Kingthrash3603971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

Well I haven't seen many articles on it...at all really. I mean it's just my opinion. I don't know what cortana has to do with gaming at all. And all the stuff you mention can be done already. Literally it can be done....easier in fact. I mean what you gunna do say volume up, STOP. so,it dosent continue going up? Why is that easier that pressing a button? Like moving your finger 3 millimeters to control volume. Lol what's cortina gun a do say yes sir...I doubt they gunna implement user names in her voice library...smh I don't see the value in it. It's just a gimmick. But whatever man, I have a Xbox no kinect...and cortana coming isn't gunna make me pay for a kinect. Ms needs to make the kinect worth it...and this e3 it's was ignored.
Not to mention the environmental aspect and the hard batteries do....but you don't like the whole charging thing so F the environment too. Right...smh

@evil way....so what happens when the batteries die and you are all out of them, while playing cod you gunna enjoy going to the store to buy batteries? Get with the times man and there is so much wrong with the fact that there is no built in batteries...I mean why does it cost the same price as a ps4 controller if the ps4 controller has a built in battery annnnd a touch screen and a mic jack?? You either have to invest in buying batt packs or batteries ...meaning every second you are paying to play an Xbox...as soon as the batteries run out you find yourself digging in your wallet to play....where the ps4 controller all you gotta do is plug in the controller...continue playing and by the time you finish a couple rounds of cod its charged and ready to go....much better than stopping completely going out to buy batteries then playing....I know you can plug a cord into the Xbox and continue...but that's too much for you already right...plus the Xbox doesn't come with a cord like all other consoles this gen...so you gotta but that too....smh but enjoy getting blindly wallet raped.

freshslicepizza3971d ago

how is the system better without it aside from paying less? you can buy an xbox one for $350 without or $450 with it and i'd probably choose without and save $100 but that doesn't make the system itself better. I'd probably only use it for xbox fitness and to navigate around and talk with it. other than that it would be hard to justify and extra hundred dollars.

ABizzel13971d ago

It's worthwhile for all the voice commands, but it's an unnecessary expense, because voice commands should be done with a regular mic.

It's $100 - $150 fee, for something that can be done with the free headphones that come with most smartphones (since they usually have a mic as well).

donthate3971d ago

Kinect made the Xbox One a lot better, but the gaming sheeps sure put a dent into Kinect plans.

Without Kinect, the Xbox One turned into a pure gaming console with no real innovation. It simply became an improved PS3/PS4/Xbox 360.

I can only imagine what the different experiences we could have had (like D4) if we only had a bigger focus on Kinect. Apart from that, I use my Kinect every day and when I get my second Xbox One, I will get another Kinect for it as well.

Bummed Kinect interest tapered off, but glad it is used in HoloLens.

Kingthrash3603971d ago

Gamers want a gaming first console....period...if not then Xbox would be the leading console.

DLConspiracy3971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

Voice commands are nice witout having to wear or carry something. Especially if you don't want to carry your controller and headphones around. When I wake up and make breakfast I enter the room "xbox on" and watch whatever I want while I am making breakfast. When I want to Skype my family or friends I have a camera. Much like my camera on my PC. It also turns on my entire entertainment system and TV when I say on at the same time. Plus I don't have to fumble through any menus or look for a remote when I want to do something.

Sure it doesn't have many games especially anymore... because everyone including people who never intended to own and Xbox complained insanely about the kinect. MS listened and so did developers for motion games. Now even the PS camera has no games made for it. Had consumers wanted more games like that... then both consoles would have motion games for them. Since it was put down both companies suffer. Although, We still don't know how they will incorporate Morpheus and Hololens with their cameras.

In either case I don't regret owning my kinect by any means.

@king thrash

That may be true but to completely deny it's practical uses other than games seems lame.

Kingthrash3603971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

I can voice command and chat without a controller with the ps4....you compare the kinect with the ps4 camera...but are forgetting the point....or points
1. the ps4 camera wasn't forced on first time buyers
2. It only costs 50-60 bucks...if the kinect costed that much we wouldn't be having this conversation.
3. The kinect nor the ps camera was never gunna be something with the consoles...its a gimmicky concept that was shown in the wii. The wii broke the water and was very successful winning last gen by a landslide...but not from hardcore gamers but by casuals. Period. I hated playing Mario Zelda and such flinging the controller around...it became a chore. To casuals its was something of an activity your grandma can play...a family party type console. Sony and ms saw this tried to grab some of that but had already established in the mind of casuals that it wasn't a family like system. Thing is many casuals didn't get a wiiu because they had a wii already collecting dust and now only core and hardcore gamers...really Nintendo hardcore own it. It was a gimmic that lasted one generation. With the kinect ms tried to blend both hardcore, casuals, and non gamer sports fans to buy a Xbox....and failed...why...because Xbox fans are gaming fans. Yeah you can brag and boast about how talking to your tv is cool...that's why you have it....but there isn't much value in it. It does nothing for games...nothing at all. It's far too expensive to say it's a valuable item.
4. Plus with the talk of ms watching you recording you and selling the data to others companies was just an intrusive thing making the kinect...or any other gaming camera undesirable to most.

pompombrum3971d ago

For me, it was a glorified code scanner. Didn't like the idea of it always being on so turned it off for the most part only really using it when I needed an external mic.

Personally I think the question shouldn't be is the Xbox One console better without it but rather, how awesome would the console potentially have been if they didn't integrate kinect in the first place.

gamer78043971d ago

Lots of things beyond games, voice control, gesture control, twitch video, mic without headset and easily input codes via QR code instead of typing lengthy numbers.

mikeslemonade3971d ago

Yes it makes it better and I will tell you why.

If X1 launched at $399.99 it would have sold more and therefore it would have more games developers backing it up. Right now Sony is making exclusives more easily because games sell on PS4 more than they do on X1.

DLConspiracy3971d ago

@King thrash

I get all that. My point was that just because a device includes more than the ability to just play games doesn't make it useless or pointless. It has value and for those that only like devices that play games they have an option to not buy a kinet or not buy a ps camera. To say the kinect is pointless because your value of it relies solely on motion games seems unfair. Sure if we have an agenda to compare xbox to PS4 that makes perfect sense. Otherwise the camera still takes video, audio, commands and motion games all for entertainment purposes and convenience.

I'm not here to argue which console company is better I am specifically talking about its use for those who use it. Unfortunately you didn't buy one to make a fair assessment of its value. So these long winded back and forths seem to have an agenda on its own. I own a Kinect. You are just making guess based on the popular vote.

_-EDMIX-_3971d ago

@Eonjay- I agree.

But for the sake of argument, better in terms of just features, by default will always sorta be yes.

Its more features vs less, even if your not using em lol.

XONE is better in terms of sales based on not having Kinect, its better based on install base getting larger due to surge of sales etc.

But as a consumer, I'll say its better only based on not having to pay for it, on a technical scale, having less isn't better in terms of features.

It really depends on in what regard one is asking "better".

Benchm4rk3971d ago

@Kingthrash

@evil way....so what happens when the batteries die and you are all out of them, while playing cod you gunna enjoy going to the store to buy batteries? Digging in my wallet everytime i wanna play....getting wallet raped....are you kidding me. I bought a Battery Charger with rechargeable AA batteries back in 2009 or 2010 for the price of $20. Im still using the same batteries to this day for my XB1 and get on average 15 to 20hrs play time out of a single set. When they run out it takes me around the same time to swap them out as it would for you to plug your charge cord in so your argument is moot. Its also a good chance to take a toilet break or grab a drink. I will agree with you on one thing though. It should be cheaper then the PS4 controller seeing as it has less hardware built in.

Gazondaily3970d ago

For many people who ACTUALLY OWN the Xbox One and Kinect, it is a wicked peripheral and one that I really can't do without now. It may not be for core games in terms of use but the voice commands are brilliant and the profile recognition stuff is still impressive to this day.

Using voice commands like Xbox Record That seems so simple but its brilliant because you don't get taken away from the action or have to fumble around with the sub menu or menu. What if you're playing a competitive online race etc. You can't afford to be on a menu whilst youre in some race. This doesn't take you away from the action.

Navigation is actually faster because you can say directly where you want to go.

Cortana is a brilliant feature when its out. To me its a game changer in the way I interact with my console. I hope it works as planned.

The Kinect is a brilliant device and for those of you who haven't tried it but are are interested, have a go yourselves and sift past the concern trolling or testaments of people who barely know how it's used to make up your own minds.

I agree, While I bought the "Day One" edition and at that time did not have an option (I did not want Kinect), I love the subtle features of Kinect and it makes navigating so much easier!

I have a 3 month old daughter, so when You have her in one hand and a bottle in the other, it DEFINITELY makes entertainment life easier! "Xbox: Volume up/down, Fast Forward, restart, next track, pause, Go to *App*, Scroll down, Next page, etc.

Even before I had my Daughter I used it for game DVR so I never had to take my finger off a joystick, or walk in my House "Xbox On" and it would turn my TV on, My surround sound on and be at the Home screen by the time I sat down on the couch.

If I bought one now and had the option would I spend the extra $100 on it? Not sure, it's hard to say yes or no, you just have to ask yourself is $100 worth it to YOU?

XanderZane3971d ago

It's worth having for me because I use it for voice, auto sign in, redeeming codes and playing games. My only problem with it is M$ made such a big deal about it, but they didn't have the apps or games ready to support it. Right now there are only about 10-15 games for it, when there should be closer to 30-40 games. I think it's better with it, especially if Hololens ends up using it like it should.

UnHoly_One3971d ago

Agreed.

I didn't particularly want a Kinect, but I wanted an Xbox One at launch so I have one.

Now I can't imagine not having it, I use it all the time, even if only for voice commands.

If it quit working I would be buying a new one immediately.

Lenrulesdaworld3971d ago

agreed, bubble up bro, it's like if you haven't grown with it over the year and change. Of course you would have doubt but as someone who has watched it get better with updates and improve, I can't live without it now.

tgunzz3971d ago

For me it's a great set. Being able to access my system without even needing a controller or mic is awesome!I also enjoy gaming with it. Waiting or cortana... It would be sweet if you could change her name.

GameForever3971d ago

They need to make a cheaper camera for Skype, twitch, and voice recognition.

Genuine-User3971d ago

In my opinion, it's good have an additional peripheral to control the Xbox One, that is when it works.
But it's not worth the retail price.

Professor_K3971d ago

That head line smh, no
Xbox is a more AFFORDABLE console without kinect PERIOD

3971d ago
BallsEye3970d ago (Edited 3970d ago )

Completely agree and with win 10 on xbox and cortana it just gets even more useful. Don't need to stop playing even for a second to do a lot of stuff. New snap also looks awesome.

Check it out! Cortana starts at 4:10

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Caution. Cortana in beta still uses crappy voice (not same natural one as on windows phone)

Personally, I dont think it is worth the price tag it comes with. If it were priced aggressively at say $50, it would be a compelling buy but at any price north of $100, it is simply not paying for itself over time. It is more of a gimmick than a useful device at that price.

Neonridr3971d ago

it should have been a separate device priced in line with the Playstation Camera.

OC_MurphysLaw3971d ago

I think its better positioned as optional given where the industry was and how consumers were reacting to the console release. I personally find it a useful device with a few fun games but also understand its not for everyone.

warrior823971d ago

the Kinect has lost its mojo. it was a novelty accessory that no one cares about now. Hence Microsoft dropped it and made it optional.

mxguy933971d ago (Edited 3971d ago )

I can do voice commands with my ps4 using a headset , even though it's limited u can still use it. Why can't ms just let us use voice commands through the headset

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio14d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing14d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit14d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing14d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn217d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn216d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown17d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay16d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac16d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger17d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300017d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde17d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde16d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_15d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
