
Kotaku-Nintendo seem to think that air drumming is a good idea. After all, it was the highlight of their Wii Music presentation last week. Harmonix, though, Harmonix beg to differ. And we like to think Harmonix know a thing or two about music games.

As tradition mandates every year, I sat watching the Nintendo's 2008 E3 presentation with high hopes of a new F-Zero being finally announced. As the presentation moved along, Cammie Dunnaway kept pushing products that were clearly not targeted at me and my generation of core gamers, bought up in the mean streets of 8- and 16-Bits. No harm there, since Nintendo's and the late great Satoru Iwata's new vision of "games for everyone" meant that there was a whole new audience to whom Nintendo had to push product presentations. I understood that, and was feeling positive because surely there had to be some sort of killer app being shown at the end of the presentation, right?

I couldn’t help but be surprised when I began noticing (from time to time) patterns in the way music is used within games. The following short list of game soundtrack stereotypes and patterns are by no means the result of a scientific process, but I do think it would be interesting to dip the metaphorical toe in the water and start this discussion!
I was expecting an article about the entire industry. This is sort of the norm for these types of games though.
People that play these music games just need to learn real instruments.
Harmonix have hit the nail on the head for me and its something I understood from the moment I watched the demo.
The whole experience of drumming is the tactile feedback of actually hitting a surface and feeling the sticks or your hands bounce back as a result of the impact. Its the very definition of drumming to strike something.
Could you imagine Donkey conga without the Bongo's? Or Rock Band drumming without pads?
Air drumming is simply waving your hands around and is not a simulation for drumming at all.
Air drums is pretty lame, but the air saxophone that one guy was rockin' at E3 was way worse.
People complain non-stop about Nintendo's pointless peripherals, but when they plan to release a game without peripherals (to make it probably $100 cheaper), everyone complains about THAT!
If you don't like the game, don't buy it. Personally, I think Wii Music is for a younger crowd, so I won't be buying it. But I'm not going to hypocritically criticize a game meant for casual and young gamers.
