Afterwords – Yooka-Laylee

Yooka-Laylee was developed by a group of industry veterans with decades of experience creating platformers on consoles like SNES and Nintendo 64. With games like Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie on the developers' résumés, fans had high expectations when the new studio started a Kickstarter campaign for a project promising to revisit the glory days of the 3D platformer genre.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign and a lengthy development cycle, Yooka-Laylee launched to polarizing results. While some praised it for its humor as well as its adherence to the classic 3D platformer formula, others felt it didn't modernize enough in the nearly two decades since the release of Banjo-Kazooie on N64. As a result, the Metacritic score ranges from 69 to 74 depending on the platform, with individual scores reaching as high as 100 and as low as 20.

Can't wait to play this in a few weeks

Ditto, 1 of my most anticipated

UltraNova3347d ago

I hope the game will turn out to be as good as Banjio&Kazouie...the nostgia is hitting red! I experienced some of the most magical moments during my teenage years with this game.

Lets see how this one turns out.

Hope they make a comeback. I miss platformers with fun mascots and colorful worlds.

bouzebbal3347d ago

No idea where you have been living for the past 10 years but there are many good platform games available.
I can name all the ratchets, sly thieves in time, mario, kirby, DK tropical freeze...

UltraNova3347d ago (Edited 3347d ago )

@boozebbal

Granted but none of the above has reached or exceeded the magic found in Banjio and Kazouie..well maybe except for Mario Galaxy, but how many got to experience it?

The fact that Y-L is made by the devs who made B&K ( plus its going to be on all platforms available) is a big big deal.

All that remains is for the game to be as good as its spiritual predesessor and we will have the top platformer in the last 15 years!

AnubisG3347d ago

@bouzebbal

Sly games are very old. There was one on the PS3 that was a new one but other than that Sly games were on the PS2. There was a few R&C games on PS3 and one on the PS4. You said past 10 years yet you listed 5 games all together. That's few and far between. Especially compared to what we got back in the PS1, N64 days.

FallenAngel19843348d ago

Funny how a game that is the spiritual successor to a series from the N64 era is coming last on a Nintendo console

Gemmol3347d ago

it be more funny if the system came out years ago, and then got it last, but your response was not funny, developers just started getting dev kit and there are developers still waiting for dev kit if you read some of their twitters.....so its pretty much common sense why its coming last, unless they want to delay the game for everyone else which isnt smart.......

Yooka-Laylee is coming out for the following platforms PS4, XB1, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Macintosh operating systems, macOS and the initial release date will be 11th April 2017 (ie. two weeks away). From the article, it looks like the game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime after that date.

Contrast the (EB Games - Australia) price of the PS4 version which is $59.95 AUD ($45.66 USD) to the Switch version $99.95 AUD ($76.13 USD). https://ebgames.com.au/ If I connect to PSN (Australia) I can preorder the game for $47.95 AUD ($36.53 USD).

BTW prices are in Australian dollars (AUD) with US Prices (AUD) in brackets and all prices include sales tax. Obviously, some brick and mortar places will be cheaper or possibly more expensive but that still means that the game for the Switch is much more expensive.

Sciurus_vulgaris3348d ago

Nintendo is well known for having high licensing fees. Also, the manufacturing cost of Switch physical copies, is likely higher than the blurays used for XB1 & PS4.

AnubisG3347d ago

The games is $39.99 in the USA. You guys in Australia pay more for the same game. That sucks.

opinionated3348d ago

I heard they were denying backers refunds. Is that true?

Summons753348d ago

Completely wrong. They gave a huge window of time for WiiU owners to either change to Switch or any other platform they wanted, upgrade to physical if any backer was at the digital level, or get a refund if they wanted. There was a cut off date so after that maybe but at that point a backer had several emails about the opportunity so the back had no excuse to miss it.

opinionated3347d ago

Why was there a cut off date? They are about to release the game, there is zero excuse not to give a refund to someone that helped you build the game. They will make it back in a few weeks so who gives a shit?

No physical copies on Switch, means no purchase
