Nintendo Has A Huge Public Image Problem

HSR's Derek Sanders writes:

'I have been a long time Nintendo fan. I’ve loved their games and their consoles since I was about five years old. But lately, I’ve found myself saying something that a lot of people have been saying about you. To sum up my and everyone’s thought’s about your recent decisions, I say this.

Nintendo, I love you, BUT YOU CAN BE A REAL PAIN IN THE BUTT SOMETIMES!

The weekend of May 29th was a good example of my and other people’s feelings towards you. The new game Splatoon released for the Wii U along with the recent wave of Amiibo figures. While the game was a huge success, the Amiibos sold out a lot faster than anyone wanted. If you wanted anyone besides Pac-Man, the general sentiment was “Good luck. You’re gonna need it.” We saw both how good you can be with making games and how bad you can be with anything else.

While financially, you have a lot of wiggle room, a lot of your recent business decisions have rubbed people the wrong way.'

I wonder why other collectable things can have limited runs and amiibos can't. I do want the splatoon amiibos but they are something I can do without until I see one passing by.

I was just checking out the whole rows of Skylander toys and I just shutter at how much money they are wasting. Over production can be crazy expensive.

Just a thought but you are right to be fustrated at not finding collectable toys

Well said.
Though, although I understand the frustration that the stock shortages are causing, at the same time I feel that people are getting a bit TOO emotional over it, of late.
Hell, it's gotten to the point where people are refusing to pick up certain games because they can't find the Amiibo connected to them.
They're useful, sure, but the features within Amiibo, by and large, aren't crucial enough to gameplay to be a major disadvantage if you don't have them.
They're being blown up into a much bigger problem than they >actually are<, by some of these people.

It's the DLC effect. Whenever a new DLC is announced for a popular game, everybody says they are happy with what they have and that they don't want to spend X amount of dollars on extra content for an already great product. When said DLC releases however, low and behold they have all clamored to get said DLC because they don't want to miss out on any content for the game they already spent 60+ dollars on. I will admit that I am very much a part of this issue, but at the end of the day the only DLC that actually matters is story DLC for RPGs, non of the other stuff really matters all that much. I will only pay for story DLC, any extra maps and weapons should be handled exactly as Nintendo is handling Splatoon, release them at staggered intervals for free. Do I need the splatoon Amiibo? No, I don't. Do I want one? Not really seeing as I have no desire to attempt the final boss using a splat roller, that just sounds like hell on earth. Will i ever buy one? Maybe.

Actually Characters from fighting games matter too , possibly more so than story dlc for rpgs . They combine a need (and demand) for competitive and casual multiplayer , be it offline and online , and also sometimes a story component .

Dlc story for rpgs are often too absysmal in size and content , and their nature often make them truly skippeable and irrelevant to the main story .

Of course there are exceptions .

@wonderfulmonkeyman

From what i gather from people at the same time into amibo and pissed about it , the problem isnt so much that amibo's content arent crucial and can be skipped ...

But the pervasive impression of being excluded from even getting the choice to get it or not . Regular dlc stick around for you do decide when to pick them up , if you want to .

But by making it a scarce and limited quantity , if you dont immediately pick it up . And i some case it's gone even if you tried to be quick about it , in some regions .

So sure Nintendo might not be dishonest and artificially create rare and unique batches ... at least not for all of them and now that they notice how successful they are .. but they could solve some of the issues by adding those dlc content as regular dlc in their online store .

It would ensure that those craving for the content might still get it , while still finding success in selling the figurines for those interested and collector .

You don't NEED amiibos to enjoy the full game.

What don't people understand about the word EXTRA ?

Like for real ?

You don't NEED to buy amiibos, you WANT to buy them.

Control your urges and wants, don't blame Nintendo.

* Amiibos add like.001% of content...at best

Knushwood Butt3994d ago

There's absolutely nothing preventing Nintendo from making more of these things.

China makes billions of little plastic figures every month.

3-4-53994d ago

They could make a billion of them, it doesn't make them DO anything more or have any more value.

* They are plastic dolls that barely serve a purpose.

I have a 3DS & Wii U and I will most likely never buy an amiibo, nor have I ever had the urge to.

* I don't blame and bash Nintendo for it though.

Not everything in this world is catered to me or meant for me, or made for me.......

So I don't get made when " I can't get my amiibo I wanted".

I deal with it and move on with my life instead of crying about it.

* Grown adults, whining like 5 year old children because they can't have their precious toy.

Grow up.

Their online structure is horrible ,you can re download or transfer and account from a new 3ds to an older one? Nintendo is stuck in the past and that's why they are last

jholden32493994d ago

That has absolutely nothing to do with how many consoles they've sold. Nobody says "Man I wanna buy a Wii U to play Splatoon and Pikmin and DKC and Smash And Mario Kart, but the online structure (ya know, the FREE internet access you get and complain about) isn't up to my set of standards and therefore I'm not buying it.

And who says they are last? Their handheld is doing fantastic. Their last handheld did fantastic. And the one before that. And the one before that. And the one before that. Their last consul did extremely well too.

Wii U's aren't selling well because of the IMAGE PROBLEM as the author has stated, not because of trivial issues like the ones you mentioned.

Baka-akaB3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

I have the same qualms about how Nintendo generally handle online for now at least two generations of nintendo home consoles . And each turn some people would rather find excuses for Nintendo , than admit that complaining about it would force them to upgrade their services and add some features , for everyone's benefits . And it's downright a shame , when Nintendo (and Sega) were actually the true pioneer of online console gaming

Even those statisfied by the koolaid and happy to stick to the past , would benefit from changes . They'd still get to ignore the new feature and services , and would be happier with people stopping to bash their beloved company .

jholden32493994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

I don't think people are defending it I think people just don't care that much. No console is perfect. I mean, sure, I wish there was Wii U party chat but I ALSO wish there was PS4 social integration like Miiverse. Doesn't mean I'm going to complain about it on every single Sony article for the next 5 years.

I mean sure they're missing some features but it's not like the console don't go online. In fact the most stable online play I've had this generation, has been on Wii U and 3DS. And unlike my PS4 and X1, I didn't pay a dime for it.

Baka-akaB3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

You're missing quite a few posts here then . There was , and still is a fringe that will defend anything , and paint any criticism as being anti-Nintendo . A select few individuals even defended the weird way Nintendo used to deal with demos of mature games in EU ( not to be downloaded before late in the night) . Something that Nintendo itself understood to be retarded , and dealt with after receiving feedback , even if they had a reason for it .

Anyway of course no console is perfect , nor any service thus far . But making requests , demands , and giving feedback works for everyone .

Not plugging our hears chanting "lala la la i dont need this , your games sucks anyway on PS and Xbox" like a few do . You can approach gaming differently , as often argued for Nintendo , it's fine . But there are a few standards to step up to that are actually now pertinent to gaming .

We've all been screaming this for years and years.

No kidding. Guess any company needs some humbling before they wake up and smell the money.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.
