Carl Williams writes, "Alright, action adventure titles are not exactly all the rage on personal computers. At least they are not nearly as popular on PC’s as they are on consoles. This could be for many reasons, I like to think it is just the misconception of what types of games PC users are into. Odallus is one more title in the 2D side scrolling action adventure genre that is squarely in the “pixel”, aka “retro”, look. For some, this is a definite turn off, for others it is a reminder of simpler times, just a new adventure. Joy Masher claim inspiration for Odallus comes from classics such as Ghosts n Goblins, Demon’s Crest and Castlevania. That is quite a selection of titles to pull inspiration from."

Paul writes: "Odallus: The Dark Call on Xbox One is a promising retro title that is hamstrung by woolly controls and a stupidly massive hitbox for your character."

Neil writes: "It's a big day for JoyMasher, and some months after first hitting Xbox One with the stunning Blazing Chrome, it is they who are releasing two more titles to console. Hot on the heels of seeing the launch of Oniken, Xbox One gamers also find access to Odallus: The Dark Call."
This game is great. It's like a middle ground between classic Catlevania and Metroidvania Castlevania.

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "If you love Castlevania III or Demon's Crest, you will probably enjoy Odallus: The Dark Call. Featuring 8-bit graphics, action-platforming gameplay, replayable levels, and secrets galore, it's a mostly solid throwback to the glory days of Trevor Belmont and Firebrand. While its branching paths, optional upgrades, and diverse boss battles help elevate it among the games that inspired it, Odallus' late-game difficulty spike and collection of glitches keep it from being the heir apparent."
