Why so many remastered games?

Nerd Reactor on why companies are pumping out remastered versions.

Because the people who didn't play such games before are buying them, and they have all the right to do so

xHeavYx4004d ago (Edited 4004d ago )

Also, the there aren't that many remastered in comparison with new games. Just a lot of people crying about it.
There are many reasons why games are being remastered, like a lot of people owned a different console last gen and didn't get a chance to play big games.

Griever4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

I agree with you. There is demand for these remasters by a sizable group of gamers so the developers are producing them. Although I think one of the reasons for several remasters this generation is the x86 architecture. Maybe the x86 architecture has made it very easy to port previous gen games on current gen hardware. After all ease of development and porting was an often touted benefit of using x86 hardware in the current gen consoles. Of course that is just a theory without any proof but it just occurred to me while thinking.

freshslicepizza4003d ago

to simplify why,

1. to make easy money

2. because both sony and microsoft don't do a very good job at backwards compatibility, again it's about maximizing profits while keeping hardware costs to a minimum.

3. familiar ip's means less risk, means good chances to make profits.

4. new owners that never had old hardware.

5. to make more money.

6. the hardware is capable of improving old software. we accept this philosophy when it comes to movies such as going from sd to hd, so why are we complaining when it happens to videogames? nothing wrong with playing old games again that are improved. why keep old games then if you never want to play them again? stop being a hypocrite.

7. because consumers buy them, equals easy money.

8. brings more interest to the franchise for new instalments and profits can go towards new entries into those franchises.

9. bottom line, to make money.

_-EDMIX-_4003d ago

Agreed with Griever. Never thought of it like that.

@Moldybread.

1. When was the goal to not make money?

2. Last gen...we got ports from publishers other then Sony and MS. BC? All PS3's are BC with PS1....yet go on PSN and see PS1 ports. Why is that bud? Doesn't that sorta break your logic? Hell I own a BC PS3....doesn't mean I OWN THE GAMES!

Which brings me to my next point, no game just did 80 million last gen, thus....we all clearly agree that no person just played all games last gen. If you own a PS4 or XONE and never played a certain game last gen, if ported....why play a lessor version on last gen, when you can play a updated version THIS GEN?

I never played Sleeping Dogs...I own a PS3 AND PS4....so play the lessor? Why? OH But Sleeping Dogs was played by all bro, yup it sold 80 million plus thus has no reasons to be on PS4 or XONE......

Even if that was true....guess what? What would stop them from porting to PS4 and XONE? With 80 million sales...they have the money to port, some ports are as low as 1 million to produce, outsourced by another team so the main team isn't delaying or stopping a game for a port (ie the famous slow gamer myth). It goes back all the way to 1. MONEY!

If they can port...they will. It makes money because people want it because EVERYONE DIDN'T PLAYED IT..thus a market exist.

So besides my disagreeing with your 2. Moldybread is very much on point. Its not being made "instead of" it was always going to be ported.

The team that ports is not the team that creates.

Naughty Dog is making UC4..NOT THIS PORT.

Retroman4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

possibly it is cheaper to remaster a game than spend millions developing from scratch .

freshslicepizza4003d ago

@_-EDMIX-_
"1. When was the goal to not make money?"

did i say they didn't? did i say they are a charity? no i did not. i am saying this is easy money.

"2. Last gen...we got ports from publishers other then Sony and MS. BC? All PS3's are BC with PS1....yet go on PSN and see PS1 ports. Why is that bud? Doesn't that sorta break your logic? Hell I own a BC PS3....doesn't mean I OWN THE GAMES!"

we didn't get as many ports as we seen now this early in a generation. the ps3 did not play ps2 games unless you had an early model. the xbox 360 had select games. this gen neither offer bc (aside from ps1 games) and low and behold we see more remasters. coincidence? i think not.

"Which brings me to my next point, no game just did 80 million last gen, thus....we all clearly agree that no person just played all games last gen. If you own a PS4 or XONE and never played a certain game last gen, if ported....why play a lessor version on last gen, when you can play a updated version THIS GEN?"

why? because you can. why allow dvd playback on bluray players? to give consumers the option to upgrade at their convenience. it's called flexibility.

"I never played Sleeping Dogs...I own a PS3 AND PS4....so play the lessor? Why? OH But Sleeping Dogs was played by all bro, yup it sold 80 million plus thus has no reasons to be on PS4 or XONE......"

so you now speak for everyone?

"Even if that was true....guess what? What would stop them from porting to PS4 and XONE? With 80 million sales...they have the money to port, some ports are as low as 1 million to produce, outsourced by another team so the main team isn't delaying or stopping a game for a port (ie the famous slow gamer myth). It goes back all the way to 1. MONEY!"

come back when you can make more sense, thanks.

_-EDMIX-_4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

@Moldybread- "i am saying this is easy money" and I agree. Merely point out that MOST of gaming is...its a business, nothing more.

"we didn't get as many ports as we seen now this early in a generation"

Yes...yes we did. I'm sorry but coming out day and date doesn't make it less of a port. I mean..unless we are calling Gun and Tony Hawk Wasteland next gen games (ie 360 next gen games) I never saw those games that way.

Many PC ports, Far Cry, BF2, Burnout Revenge, Phantasy Star Universe, Dynasty Warriors 5, Samurai Warriors 2, Guitar Hero II, Rayman Raving Rabbids, The Orange Box (as HL2 released on XB), FFXI, Bully.

Soooo I would say the only reason we even saw 360 get less right now then PS4 and XONE currently was based on 360 used DVD, as XB used DVD as well some of those ports where not even feasible based on space limitation.

As to why PS3 got more collections even from games that are not published by Sony.

Splinter Cell, KH, Prince Of Persia, FFX, Tomb Raider Trilogy, AC collection (might have been 2 of em) etc

It could be based on bluray as a format as to why it got more collections, but more importantly it might be why we didn't see as much collections or HD versions of last gen titles as much during the first year or so of 360's life.

But the reality is....we still saw ports regardless. I again don't really leave out some cross gen games as some of those titles where barely enhanced if at all when put on 360 cough Gun cough. So the only thing about those is that they have might as well just be ports that released day and date as I wouldn't just call them games of that gen as suppose to games that released on that system at the time.

"so you now speak for everyone?" Nope. Merely showing that no game was 100% played by 100% of gamers last gen, thus if released this gen with enhancements, and someone owned a PS4 and XONE, once again....why play the lessor version?

"why? because you can" Even with the choice of a better version? Mind you I stated if you didn't play the last gen version. That isn't just based on not owning the system, its also based on not owning the game.

ie I own a PS2...I don't own Persona 3 or 4, I own them on PS3 as those versions have better load times and look slightly better. Hell I own a PS1 as well, doesn't mean I own Parasite Eve 1 or 2, I'll get them on PSN for PS3 as again, better load times and cheaper, google that game new.

Its not just about having BC. I mean..do you not have the choice to also keep the system you where playing them on?

"and low and behold we see more remasters. coincidence? i think not"

Wii had BC, yet got GC ports. PS3 had BC with PS1...got PS1 ports.

PC is FULLY BC with MOST PC titles..still gets enhancements, remakes etc. I don't also think its a "coincidence" either...its because they have bluray and HDDs. They have more space to do it on both systems in HD, something they could't do on 360. Also like someone mentioned it could be due to x86. Was 360 not BC? I thought it was to some point and it still has XB originals that were ported to XBL.

I just don't buy the whole (ports to sell you twice) idea as you don't need to buy it, you can keep your old games and OLD SYSTEMS and we are even seeing it with systems that had BC.

x86 is their new architecture.

and you again can just keep your old games.

You don't need to buy the ports...you don't need to burn your last systems lol, you'll live.

The market exist for ports because again...not everyone got 3000 games last gen.

"Why so many remastered games?"

Because there are people out there with way too much money to spare, don't mind purchasing the same game over and over and over again. I wish I had that much money to throw away, but I don't. C'est la vie.

Aloy-Boyfriend4003d ago

It's funny because I have a good job and money to spare. And the only remastered game I've bought is The Last of Us. I Don't plan on buying anymore maybe except Uncharted Collection

CorndogBurglar4003d ago

Yes, lets be bitter and totally one-sided and not even mention that there are a lot people that never played these games the first time around.

Insomnia_844003d ago

That made no sense at all.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

how come it didnt happen previous generation OH right devs refuses to push out smaller games these days cause they only care about spending large budget and want million sellers games instead of trying to try different things.

gangsta_red4003d ago

I remember a common excuse of people accepting not having BC in their consoles was because they didn't want to play old games on their new expensive consoles.

But now it seems people are willing to pay for old games to be played on those very same new consoles. It makes no sense.

Games from previous gens I can maybe understand, like Resident Evil 1, a complete overhaul was done to that game to make it appear new. Those are the types of re-masters we should want from these developers. Not a game from last gen with a shiny new coat of paint only slapped on.

Spotie4003d ago

Are the people now willing to buy remasters the same ones who said they didn't want to play old games on their new consoles? How common WAS this excuse? Is their decision set in stone? Are they not allowed to change their mind later on down the line without being a hypocrite?

Does their- at this point entirely theoretical- hypocrisy eliminate the larger number of people who HAVEN'T played these games? Does their interest in these highly regarded titles not count for anything?

Brotard4003d ago

Most people think developers are taking most time to do remastered instead of original games. That's dumb in two ways. 1 if they are it helps them understand the new hardware better quicker. And 2 most remastered are done by companies that specialize in it like bluepoint

dancerOfDeath4003d ago

allow me to suggest an alternate reason.

*ahem*

Moooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooo!

rainslacker4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

I have a different theory. I believe these game companies produce so many remasters so the gaming press has a way to make money by making up daily articles asking why there are so many remasters. You'd think after the last few years of this same question being asked(and answered), they would have found their answer, because most people who comment on it seem to know the answer, and that answer is true for pretty much every comment on the subject. To bring the game to more people, to cash in on a popular title, to offer more content, etc.

I have another theory as well. The gaming press often isn't that bright, and it requires the readers, and subsequent posters, to answer for them which they in their place within the industry should have an intimate understanding of. I don't mind people that want to write on why they think it's too many, or whatever, despite disagreeing for the most part, but I do not like this trend of starting articles with a question. in my opinion, if you have to ask a question to start an article, it's a weak article because an article is supposed to be the author asking a question, maybe forming a hypothesis on the answer, then finding out the answer to that hypothesis(regardless of if it matches the authors belief), then presenting what they found out to the reader...much like how the scientific method works. Nowadays, too many articles are written on the premise of the reader providing the actual content, which is just lazy.

Sorry for the side rant, just something that's been bugging me of late...or the past 5 years or so.

I'll admit that remastering games is not what I want this gen to be about. But at the same time, I have never owned an xbox till now. I am very grateful for the MCC remaster and Gears remaster that allow me to catch up on 2 major xbox franchises. If I didn't already play Uncharted or TLOU, or God of War 3, I would also be grateful for those games.

So far this gen as been the fastest growing console community ever. With that I'm guessing many of these comers are new and Have probably never experienced the other side. Remasters allow them to see the amazing adventure they may have missed.

Of course the downside is that the rest of us are left with a game we already played so we feel left out. But that is why there are new games coming as well.

I say there are remasters that are good and remasters that while maybe good they are not necessary.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

SmokingMonkey4003d ago

Why so many articles on why to remaster games?

scark924003d ago

Why so many comments on why articles comment on why remaster games?

xD

deafdani4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

Why so many replies to so many comments on why articles comment on why to remaster games?

Wait, what the f*&k did I just say?

EazyC4003d ago

It's a hot potato at the minute on gaming sites, and a real source of catty-nerd convo on forums!

rainslacker4003d ago

It's easier to write an opinion piece on why there are so many remasters as opposed to trying to get some information about a new game that is announced or speculated on. Not to say that the average game journalist could easily get that information with some effort, just that there isn't a whole lot to write about most of the time in the gaming world. Since hits are driven by people getting pissed off about a topic, we see things get written on that tend to be a volatile topic...although I think most people don't really care about remasters either way unless they're interested in them, or they want to use it for console war arguments.

bub164003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

Out of all the remasters out there, THIS IS ONE I REALLLLLY WANT, and cod4 :(

EazyC4003d ago

Classic MP games are a good choice. I remember CoD 4, Resistance 1, and Gears of War 1 all had really cool MP modes, would love remasters for them

Paytaa4003d ago

If they re-released CoD 4 with everything as it was when it came out in 2007, I'd be all over that in a heartbeat. No Call of Duty has ever recaptured the sense of awe and entertainment that CoD 4 delivered, that includes MW2.

BlackTar1874003d ago

o surprise another article about this. I've commented on 5 just today and i haven't commented on 1/2 of them.
