Why launch something that is far from done?

They did the same thing with trophies(1 game? 2?), ingame XMB(sometimes sluggish, sometimes not supported at all) and the pretty much non-existent custom soundtrack feature. I think Sony are trying hard to silence critics, and they do so by rushing out unfinished features.

...that it isn't very fun to listen to people complain all day long. There are tons of things that are wrong with the world, but if everyone just spent lots of time complaining about the problems online, nothing would be done to fix the problems and things would just get worse.

The reality is... if someone can make a better online video store and get all of the movie publishing studios to agree with their plan and their pricing, then they should make one and release it all for us to enjoy. If they can't, what's the use in complaining about someone else's work?

It's one thing to say "This service has a lot of potential, and I am excited about it. I hope that, in the future, one will be able to re-download movies. Otherwise, I will have to factor in the cost of the hard drive space the movie takes up into the cost of the movie. Otherwise, I really like the way things are headed and am looking forward to the future."

It's an entirely different thing to say "This service sucks. My garden hose is better at streaming than this crap of a service. Here, let me jot down 6 things that are wrong with the system and put the article online. I would have made a list of 10 complaints, but then people would have complained that I was just repeating myself with 4 of them. Yeck, and what's with this energy drink I'm drinking? This tastes like crap! I could make a better drink with my socks and a glass of water. And, it's freezing in here. Who the hell turned up the A/C so high? Is this the march of the penguins or what?"

One is just constructive criticism. The other leads to a grumpy old man. Can you tell the difference? If having a positive outlook on life and not always using tunnel vision to always seek out the flaws in every little thing is being a "fan"... then I would rather be a fan than be an annoying complainer about every one of my needs that corporations are supposed to cater to because I've got money.

i was pretty entertained by your 'guy-on-speed' thought process. however, it doesn't change my point. By consumers expressing their dissatisfaction with a product or service, the person or company providing said services would be forced to make changes to encourage new and renewed support.

I agree with you that people should also look on the bright side of things. Like hey, after being in the next generation for 2 years, we finally can download movies. but, people should also point out the flaws and possibly discontinue their support until the issues are addressed.

I'm not standing here wanting the ps3 to fail, i'm saying these things because i'm so sick of listening to unjustified praise for a sloppy service. Yes, ps3 online is free, no the service isn't nearly as good as it could be. it is positive that it's free and it is positive that they are making moves in the right direction, but until they actually get something that's universally accepted as a good service, people should call them out on it to get the ball rolling or the wheels in motion or any other cliché that accurately describes the situation.

EDIT: Here's a good example of what i'm saying...about 2 below me. Incogneato. He says the ps store is amazing. Doesn't amazing sound like a word that should be reserved for prom night, or bioshock, or messing up the curve for the rest of the class even though you spent the weekend getting trashed? I don't think an interface that's designed to sell you products should fall into the same category. It's these words and manipulation of facts (or non facts) that go beyond simply describing the ps3 and almost ruining the experience for any logical person. I like my PS3, i really enjoyed a few games for it, but everyone is just so over-hyped on it like i'm about to experience the most amazing thing and then i'm always feeling let down.
Bottom line is, it's always good to call these companies, that we are paying Billions, out on the flaws so they are forced to make necessary improvements.

I hear what you're saying. However, if you look at his comments again... he says it is amazing... but then says that Sony still needs to improve it. Really, the problem comes down to a break down of communication. You might assume that the word "amazing" means "perfect" or "flawless". In its use, it is clear it doesn't.

To be honest with you, I wasn't expecting the video store until after Home went live... or shortly before it. When Sony suddenly announced it would be live the night of the announcement, I was floored. "Awesome," I thought. It was really due to the surprise. As the surprise settled down, the reality is, it's a bit of a yawn. NOT because Sony did a bad job with it... but the reality of it is, the idea of download-able movies just has a long way to go in the industry at large. I have a TiVo with Amazon Unbox service... I also have a Netflix player by Roku. While I think these are great as well, I'm not exactly thrilled by either. My hopes that Sony's entry into the market would change the game just turned into the reality that they have merely entered the game.

But see, there are two schools of thought. One is that by praising the positive things, you can make it clear to the company or individual exactly what they are doing RIGHT... and that they can determine what they are doing WRONG by seeing what people AREN'T doing. i.e., if everyone rents but nobody buys, they know they've got more to do in regards to the purchase concept.

The other school of thought is that by bashing the negative things, you can make it clear to the company or individual exactly what they are doing WRONG... and that they can determine what they are doing RIGHT by seeing what people AREN'T bashing.

I happen to believe in the first school of thought. Praise the progress... then give suggestions. Most others (especially online) tend to lean towards the second school of thought. Bash the mistakes... and hope this leads them to work harder.

Anyway, I had only just discovered (in the terms of service) that once you have downloaded a purchase, and delete it, you must purchase it to download it again. This is unacceptable to me. Amazon Unbox does not have this requirement. So, until this changes, I don't plan on purchasing any movies through the store. I MAY rent some movies, but only if I am too impatient to wait for the NetFlix delivery and the movie isn't available (for a $1.50 rental) from the rental kiosk at my local grocery store.

Outside of this one restriction which makes the store unusable for me, I thought the progress being made by Sony in this area has been excellent. Oh well.

The thing is, everyone who is complaining is likely comparing it to their expectations rather than reality. The expectation is that you click a button and a crazy 3-D interface comes up which appears to float in front of you that you manipulate with your hands. Then, you pick a movie from every movie ever made in history... and it is instantly streamed in hi-def without ever using any of your ISP's bandwidth, while popcorn gets launched into your waiting mouth periodically.

The reality of it is, the world just isn't there yet. Most of the content that is out there was made before such distribution mechanisms existed. So, the licensing deals did not always provide provisions for streaming into people's homes. So, a bunch of business people and lawyers are trying to strike deals with content publishers to be sure the economy doesn't collapse, their wallets remain fat, and everyone remains reasonably excited about the future.

When you compare to what is already out there. The XBox market place has more movie/TV choices, but has also been out longer. One would expect them to do better with a head start. Give them props for making it out of the gates first. (And, no, everyone's not just "copying" them. The writing has been on the wall for a long time, it has just taken this long for the suits and lawyers to figure out their agreements.) Amazon Unbox is nice, but if you want to watch the movies on your TiVo, expect to wait a whole lot longer than just a few minutes before you can start watching the movie. In most cases, expect to wait hours. Netflix instant watching is nice, but the selection is a WHOLE LOT LESS. Expect to continue to get top-brand movies by mail. Get lesser-heard-of movies or more-heard-of documentaries streamed to your Roku player instantly. This will be the same situation when the same service is available for the XBox 360 later. Apple's system is nice, if not a bit pricey for the hardware at the start.

So, is Sony's system where we'd like the future to be? Not yet. Is there any system out there which is where we'd like the future to be. Not yet. It's still a new concept. Everyone's still trying to figure out who gets paid and when and how much. Expect ISPs to start charging for additional bandwidth, and expect this to affect your movie streaming habits. Expect the world to go through a lot of growing pains first before it becomes a system that everyone takes for granted. That's when people ask the questions, "What did we ever do before there was on demand video streaming? I shudder to think."
