Introducing The Coalition – A Message from Rod Fergusson

Beginning today, the Vancouver-based Xbox team working on the Gears of War franchise will be known as The Coalition. What's in a name? In short, The Coalition speaks to who we are as a team, and what it is we're working on.

Gears 4 life. Well I hope they get Gears 4 right because the franchise needs it to be very good.

Christopher4020d ago

So, they will only ever make Gears of War games? Doesn't seem like a good business plan nor a good reason to change the name. But, hey, good luck to them. I guess they saw the need, whatever the reason, to make this change. I just hope they don't really only ever make Gears of War games.

gangsta_red4020d ago

Why wouldn't a studio dedicated to making a single franchise seem like a good idea? Works for Grand Turismo, Forza and other developers who focus on their franchise.

Kayant4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

That's their plan.
"I just hope they don't really only ever make Gears of War games." - Well don't hold your breath ;) He basically said something along the lines of - "We want to be known as the gears of war studio like 343 is known for Halo."

I do agree they shouldn't just be a gears studio especially funny enough given it was a far cry from what they were hoping to do before.

After the studio's rebranding, studio manager Mike Crump told the Vancouver Sun that Black Tusk had been given the green light to work on a brand new AAA game.

"We are working on Microsoft's next big franchise," Crump said in November of 2012. "We're not working on an existing franchise. We're looking to build the next Halo here in Vancouver, for example, which is really exciting. We're building something from the ground up."

Microsoft teased what many believed was Black Tusk's original IP at its E3 press conference seven months later. Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer announced on stage that the company was investing in five new studios to create blockbuster franchises for Xbox, and Black Tusk was one of them. He said the studio was "assembling a world-class team to create a brand new AAA exclusive game for Xbox One."

***Why wouldn't a studio dedicated to making a single franchise seem like a good idea?***

IMHO, every studio that has dedicated themselves to making just one franchise has resulted in making games with less and less innovation and more and more repeating of the past rather than evolving with the times.

There may be some very few exceptions to this, but overall we've seen what happens when a studio is stuck to an IP: CoD, AC (heck, all of Ubisoft AAA titles are copying AC now it seems), and more. Sure, Halo still sells well and can still be considered a good game, but look at the reviews from Halo 2: CE and you'll see a general decline in opinion. Why? Perhaps because they're so focused on their one thing that they don't branch out enough to see other ways to evolve the game.

I'd rather a studio that flexed its muscles by escaping out of its normal routine to explore new options and then come back to the same IP with fresh ideas and concepts rather than just doing the same concept over and over.

Mr Pumblechook4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

The studio had a name, it was Black Tusk. Renaming them seems like corporate rebranding. It's what EA use to do in their bad old days when they acquired studios. The plus side is the financial support they get. The minus is that a studio loses a little bit of their individual identity.

I have no doubt that the new Gears of War game will be great. But this renaming would have been masterminded by Phil Spencer and perhaps gives an insight into the future of the Microsoft Xbox first party studios. I hope Spencer learns from his experience turning down Guitar Hero and Rime. I would love to see him experiment with unproven IP, they don't have a guaranteed audience but sometimes they create one!

gangsta_red4020d ago

I think having a studio dedicate to a brand is a great idea. Too many times have we seen an existing IP go to another developer (Arkham:Origins, Borderlands Prequel) only to see them mess it up. This way the same team sticks together, tweaks or expands on ideas, and pretty much guarantees stability of work too.

"Perhaps because they're so focused on their one thing that they don't branch out enough to see other ways to evolve the game."

Every time we see a game try and "branch" out all we hear is moaning and complaining from the fanbase. These established IP's have a formula that works, this is why they are not only established but successful. The only thing to do is tweak and change certain aspects of the design and gameplay to make it appear fresh. It has worked for those games you mentioned above, it should work for Gears.

"I'd rather a studio that flexed its muscles by escaping out of its normal routine..."

Thank goodness there are other studios to do just that. But this isn't one of them, this is a studio specifically dedicated to one brand and I like that. A studio that thinks, creates and stays with improving one brand for their dedicated fanbase.

Christopher4020d ago

***Every time we see a game try and "branch" out all we hear is moaning and complaining from the fanbase. These established IP's have a formula that works, this is why they are not only established but successful.***

Pretty much the exact opposite response to gamers when they're presented with the 4th game in a series tend to make.

I get your thought here, I just completely disagree with it. Especially using the logic of people complaining (that will never end). The stats show that development teams who focus on just a single IP, for the most part, tend to create lesser and lesser games while other companies create new IPs with new ideas and concepts.

And, remember, what I said is that this is a bad business decision, and I stand by that. The better business decision is to always stay ahead of the game. I don't think they're on board to do that by settling themselves with just one IP.

Hopefully they are allowed to branch off to make some smaller games. Similar to the few small games out of Ubisoft.

343i = Halo
Turn 10 = Forza
The Coalition = Gears

Rod will lead Gears for many glorious years to come.

christocolus4020d ago

Cant wait to see Rod and the team at E3. Hopefully we will get a Gears 4 ingame demo.

hello124020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

Name change and Logo change

I actually got the COG medal when i bought the Gears of War 3 collectors edition.

Coalition.

http://gearsofwar.wikia.com...

E3 can't wait we going to see two games from them i think both gears related.

IVanSpinal4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

I liked a little bit more the Black Tusk Studios name, but the animation of the Coalition logo looks cool & they will be working on more Gears games, thats what i wanted (excuse my grammar guys)

PrinceOfAllSaiyans4020d ago

Another MS studio that will be forced to churn out the same game every year like 343i. This pretty much kills the possibility of them making new games. I guess that was telling when Microsoft made them kill their new IP they were making in order to make Gears.

OpieWinston4020d ago

Microsoft made them shelf it.

And obviously the 100+ people who work their see Rods vision for Gears and have been happy with it.

They've hired multiple leads from previous Gears/Epic in the last year. Every livestream they've had with employees has resulted in them saying they're very excited for Gears.

Creating a new IP isn't easy, they prefer going with the safe zone for the foreseeable future.

wakeNbake4020d ago

To be fair, there are multiple teams involved.

Kayant4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

@WeAreLegion

True but the comment was MS having no yearly franchises. Multiple teams is what enables yearly games in the first place. So...

You forget the last studio that was supposed to be working on Gears was Black Tusk. This means they are now free.

GetSomeLoGiK4020d ago

.....black tusk is still working on it, just under a new name. The Coalition.

d_g4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

why you have to be always negative about MS

even rod the head of the studio said he was happy about Gears of war 4

And he join to the studio Because of Gears

http://www.polygon.com/2014...

@Kayant

forza not yearly franchise

Forza 5- 2013
Forza 6- 2015

Forza horizon 2- 2014

completely two different Games from different developers

it’s like comparing gran turismo to need for speed

and you even put phone games in the list like

Halo: Spartan Assault
Halo: Spartan Strike
Halo 4: King of the Hill Fueled by Mountain Dew

????????

Kayant4020d ago

Just because they are phone games doesn't mean they are not part of Halo as a franchise after all if it was not it wouldn't have halo in it's name or branded as a Halo game.

"it’s like comparing gran turismo to need for speed" - Maybe if they were both had "Forza" in their name sure.

Forza Horizon is still part of the Forza franchise as it's a spinoff to the main one. Even if you want to exclude Forza the point still stands because Halo has had a game every year in the franchise since 2009.

christocolus4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

Exactly. I don't understand how in 2015 people still think Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport are one and the same. it's like saying DC and GT are one and the same. Ignorance is bliss i guess. Maybe it would make more sense to certain people if MS changed Forza Horizon to just Horizon??

and lol @

Halo: Spartan Assault
Halo: Spartan Strike
Halo 4: King of the Hill Fueled by Mountain Dew

????????.. needed to make the list look good.

Kayant4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

@christocolus

"Ignorance is bliss i guess." - It sure is because you apparently don't know what a franchise means.

"????????.. needed to make the list look good." - Facts tend to do that ;)

Gears Of War Dev Was Allegedly Working On Xbox's Answer To Uncharted, But It Got Canceled

Gears of War developer The Coalition was allegedly working on Xbox's answer to the Uncharted series, but the game ultimately got canceled.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH243d ago

Why bother even attempting to make a rival to Uncharted when MS no longer cares about the exclusives? On top of that Uncharted is not even relevant at the moment.

Krablante243d ago

Sorry that your favourite console is dead

raWfodog243d ago

I’m sure that there are many new IPs that get canceled throughout the industry so that’s nothing new, of course. I just worry that we lose some potential great games due to publishers shortsightedness.

RaidenBlack243d ago

.... I once thought Indiana Jones was supposed to be the Uncharted rival .... but glad it ended up being abit different and unique

ZwVw243d ago

Would have much preferred this over Gears 4, quite honestly. It's sounds like the Syphon Filter people have been clamoring for ages from Sony to revive.

Avowed Moved to Unreal Engine 5.3

With Support from The Coalition

ThinkThink737d ago

That's great news. Hopefully the Coalition can smooth some of those edges from the last Avowed reveal.

phoenixwing737d ago (Edited 737d ago )

Well I'm annoyed. Especially at all the ppl who said the graphics sucked. It's your fault they probably shifted the game to unreal so it could look more fancy for you. I was ok with it and hoping to actually play it sometime soon. Now it's like 99% chance it's delayed.
Edit: effing graphics whores

Obscure_Observer737d ago

"Well I'm annoyed. Especially at all the ppl who said the graphics sucked. It's your fault they probably shifted the game to unreal so it could look more fancy for you."

What the hell are you talking about dude? Avowed was already in development using the UE5. The Coalition is just helping Obsidian in the transition to its latest version (5.3)

MrBaskerville737d ago (Edited 737d ago )

Probably not even that big of a difference. Coalition might only have helped because they got a deadline to meet.

Unreal isn't nearly as bad as Unity when you update a project. Though it obviously depends on the project. But unity generally gets an aneyurism if you threaten to update, where Ue is usually less stingy.

Reaper22_737d ago

In excited for Avowed and Gears 6.

Fishy Fingers737d ago

It already was Unreal 5, its just moving to the latest build.

CantThinkOfAUsername737d ago

Latest build is 5.4 and it's better than previous iterations, particularly in animation and performance.

Lightning77737d ago

Apparently the latest build looks way better graphically. This rumor from Jez Cordin (who's credible) pretty much confirms it.

Interested in seeing more on Avowed in a few weeks.

Notellin737d ago

UE 5.3 has been out since September of last year. I can't believe this is news or that anyone is hyping this up.

MrNinosan737d ago

As Hellblade failed to set the world on fire, just like Halo Infinite and Starfield before it, it's time to look forward to the next Game of the Decade candidate.
Of course it needs to be hyped up ahead of time 😏

Notellin737d ago

I didn't mean the game itself. I can't believe there is a news article about an Unreal Engine update that launched a year ago.

Reading comprehension is tough for fanboys on N4G.

got_dam736d ago (Edited 736d ago )

@MrNinosan I just want to see what Obsidian can do with a real budget and development time. They have a made a some memorable games with massive time constraints an lackluster funding.

--Onilink--736d ago

Many games stick to a specific version of the Engine they had already been using to avoid delays, problems with migrations to newer stuff etc.
The version being released in September isnt really relevant, just that they decided to make the jump to it at some point in development, which is arguably good news since we know with each iteration, performance has been getting much better

MrNinosan736d ago

@got_dam
I actually look forward to Avowed, and hope that's the game that finally make my purchase of Series X in 2020 worth it.
The game I actually bought Series X for was Starfield, but sadly it didn't do it for me.

Avowed however has the potential to be incredible.

ThinkThink736d ago

MrNinosan, what is the last game that set the world on fire? Red Dead? GTA likely. Not every game has to set the world on fire. Those games that you mentioned fall into the 80's meta critic, and a lot of people enjoy them. And yes, I'm excited to see some of these 2024 games at the june conference.

MrNinosan734d ago

@ThinkThink
It's MS and its fans who make it sound like every game they have on the horizon would "set the world on fire" and they all failed to reached expectations.

I don't ask for it.

But to answer your question, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would be the last game that everyone speaks highly about.

Before that, Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarök, Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us Part 2, Zelda BotW, Animal Crossing, Half Life Alyx....

Right!!! Obsidian is like only XB GS that I wanna play there games . Pillars of Eternity is one of my fav game franchises and I'd love to step back into the world of Eora . Their world building and rpg systems are one of the best , I hope XB higher ups don't get in the way of them. If they released it on ps I would definitely buy it day 1

Gears Of War Studio Is Donating 1% Of Revenue For Suicide Awareness Month

Microsoft's The Coalition studio has partnered with Crisis Text Line.

gamespot.com
Crows901364d ago

Absolutely. By now everyone should be plainly aware of suicide.

When life has no meaning for you and all you see is the bad suffering crap in your life. Never before has there been so many suicides and never before has there been such an enormous society completely alienated from each other. This is one reason I didn't like the shutdowns. Suicides and depression sky rocketed like you wouldn't believe. As much as we like to think mankind is evil and how horrible people can be...people need people.

I'm all for companies pitching in for universally good causes.

Noskypeno1364d ago

It's wrong for kids to laugh at another kid saying his grandma died from covid, it's also wrong to shutdown the universe and only have contact through the internet. The people who are either vulnerable or want to be locked down until every last person no longer is infected should do so. The people who want the freedom and want to show their faces should do so too, its sad to hear an elementary school kid talk about not seeing his classmates faces and not communicating clearly.

I don't want to downplay the pandemic, because it was bad, but the media and the people pulling the strings deserves some flak for saying a man that had three bullet holes in his head died from covid just because he had covid.

Crows901364d ago

@noskypeno
Anyone laughing at anybody's death should be spanked like a child. Of course the vulnerable should be protected. Makes you wonder whyd someone would send covid positive patients to nursing homes. Geez.

CBaoth1363d ago (Edited 1363d ago )

but the problem is, Coaltion is essentially donating 20 cents on every 20 dollars YOU spend. If it was THEIR money they would've announced they were gonna donate 1% of LAST month's sales with suicide awareness. Now, they sit on a sales boon created by customer's generosity, accrue interest 10x more than the donation itself, and use the donation as tax relief next year! Certainly for a good cause but not very altruistic, is it?

I know better than anyone all companies do it. My company asks for pediatric donations. Last year alone they donated 3.3 million to combat terminal illnesses with children. There's nothing more on Earth that pulls at my heartstrings than seeing a child and their family have to endure that. But it definitely pisses me off knowing my company does it for the financial windfall and not because they care. At the end of the day though, that 3.3mil will do more good than I could have ever hope to give. I guess we'll always have to struggle with the eternal debate, do the ends justify the means?

porkChop1363d ago

I understand where you're coming from, and I do agree.

rippermcrip1364d ago

I don't want to teardown a good cause.... but who exactly is buying any of these games att his point?

MadLad1364d ago (Edited 1364d ago )

You'd be surprised.
Even with Gamepass, the Gears games typically rank amongst the most sold anytime there's a big sale.
It's harder to track on Xbox.

Godmars2901364d ago

By what measure if MS isn't reporting those numbers?

And what does it really mean if by "sale" the game's being sold at a discount? Could be talking about $2-5?

If we're talking 10k sales at $5 that 1% of 50k or $500.

MadLad1364d ago (Edited 1364d ago )

@godmars

I've never seen Gears of War Remastered, Gears 4, or Gears 5 nearly that low in any sale.

Like I said, even being on Gamepass, even during large sales with many games on sale, they tend to be some of the biggest sellers. There a lot of people still buying the Gears series even after years of being released.
There's a lot more digital sales than I think you would assume.

HardKnockKid241364d ago

Your first thought should have prevented your second thought. Smh

Crows901364d ago

Not huge but not insignificant either.

Melankolis1363d ago

1% revenue is quite many. Means if they take 30% profit from their revenue, they actually give 3% and so on.

I believe you regularly give more than 1% of your revenue that's good, but as a company whose behavior is always driven by profit, the executives deserve credit.

MadLad1364d ago

1% more than 99% typically give.
