Will Downgrades Ever Stop?

Stu at Sushimonster85 writes 'This past Tuesday saw the long-awaited release of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Despite garnering some of the best reviews in recent years, a lot of the subsequent talk has been on the games clear downgrade from the graphical quality seen during the initial reveal, and the final product. Despite the games developer (CD Projekt Red) being far more open than other developers about the necessity of the downgrade in a recent interview, it means The Witcher joins a growing list of games to suffer varying degrees of downgrades between initial reveal and release.'

Will complaining about everything ever stop

joab7774035d ago

Instead of having devs shoot for the stars with their very early development, we should instead care about the fact that every piece of info we get, in a time of info overload that pays the bills, is exactly the same as the final release. Gimme a break. The Witcher 3 is an amzinging game by an amazing g developer. We should be happy and praising them for what they accomplished.

1nsomniac4035d ago

We should be but that's the whole point!

If they told us it was going to be the way it was released we would all praise & love it so much more. But it's over shadowed by the fact that perfectly good games are being sold to us with false promises.

Stop selling us lies & we will stop complaining about them. You surly don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that.

zidane13414035d ago

Selling us lies...well aren't you a drama queen. You could see what the game looks like as soon as hits stores. Nobody puts a gun to your head and says this is what the game looks so you must pre order now. You guys do this on yourself so stop being ridiculous. You know what CD are selling? A MASSIVE, WONDERFUL game. The end. Yet you cry babies still act like they promised us the world.

badz1494034d ago

there shouldn't be any downgrades to begin with. instead of revealing the game with "actual game footage" or "pre-alpha footage" or the likes, why not just call them "target render" or call them what they really are..."CGI trailer"!

showing glorious "gameplay footage" years or months before release just to build hype is a disgusting practice and gamers are also at fault for this. they are falling for it too freakin easily! devs/publishers should stop doing it and gamers should know better!

BiggerBoss4035d ago

Yes. Lets stop complaining about downgrades. Lets also stop complaining about DLC, Season passes, and yearly rehashes. That'll surely improve the state of the gaming industry! /s

1nsomniac4035d ago

Eventually someone with a little intelligence & forethought.

Summons754035d ago

Sorry that you would like your games to be super realistic but have gimped gameplay...

Seriously, how do you not realize that when they cut down graphics (because unlike what you think, they ARE NOT very important for game development) it's ultimately to improve the gameplay and either fix something broken or make it more fun. Personally, I like fun games. You people crying about a hardly noticeable downgrade in The Witcher 3 goes to show how selfish and entitled you really are, and how uneducated on actual game development you truly are. The Witcher 3 looks AMAZING but you are still crying about it. The DLC, Season Passes, and yearly rehashes are something real that hurts the industry (as you sarcastically state) but cutting down something unimportant to improve something imporant is a good thing

zidane13414035d ago

Well had the last 5 years of people complaining, even done any good? Hmm, no? Then you guys are wasting time. Your annoying cry babying isn't fixing anything.

Rachel_Alucard4035d ago (Edited 4035d ago )

@Zidane

So what the paid mods, Xbone infrastructure, Online pass, PC dark souls, and the AC unity fiasco were wasting time? It's like people talk like they know everything but they can only speak where assumptions are facts.

Apparently clickbait articles will never stop.

Antifan4035d ago

I really don't care about the downgrade at this point. This game is addictive, and never felt this much enjoyment since Skyrim.

Soc54035d ago

Will complaining about complaining ever stop?

Company_Policy4034d ago

I couldn't agree more. The game looks so good of course it wasn't going to look like what they showed at E3 but come off it the game looks awesome. Not to mention you can go into every house and the world is so large.

What a stupid article. He clearly knows nothing about what happens in a games development cycle. Is this a teenager writing this trash? WTF and NO this garbage.

sushimonster854035d ago

Wow, maybe want to try reading the article before posting something so inflammatory, rather than just the opening paragraph.

Its more a look at why it happens, and its actually reasonably optimistic about the future. I am 29 year old dude who doesn't pretend to know the inner workings of video game development, I tend to look at things from a consumers perspective.

jb2274035d ago

"I tend to look at things from a consumers perspective."

As you & everyone else should! I understand game development is hard, but I find it even harder to believe that they honestly thought they could hit those initial renders. It's not an accident that these things are happening, but lets say it is totally & completely accidental, shouldn't we as gamers at least point out the discrepancies so they can make an effort to understand their goals & ability to reach them a bit better? No other industry has valleys this wide in a product between its reveal & its release, and things like CGI in film are working w/ some of the exact same hardware. I never see those guys making excuses when they release trailers full of amazing visuals only to release something decidedly lesser, because it's never happened. I'm sure the Witcher 3 is a fun game, no one has said otherwise. I personally don't like the way the reps from CDPR have handled it, it's almost like they are blaming us for even caring, and they are playing the victim. I wish at the very least these companies would come out and tell us what has changed in the game & why it has changed, and they need to do that prior to release so that those of us who really care about these things have time to cancel our preorders if we so choose. They do the exact opposite, they swear there are no downgrades even when its right in front of our face, then they insinuate that we are being unreasonable because we don't "understand games development". I certainly don't know game development, but I trust my eyes, and they tell a different story from the ones these people spin. Its not about the quality of the title in question, its about drawing a line in the sand to keep dishonesty to consumers from proliferating to an untenable level.

like 1nsomniac said up there "If they told us it was going to be the way it was released we would all praise & love it so much more." How about devs shoot for targets they know they can hit & improve from there? I'd rather be wowed by a game looking better through the course of development than bummed its getting progressively worse just so some marketing cats can grab our preorders. It's dishonest, plain & simple.

Vegamyster4035d ago

"What a stupid article. He clearly knows nothing about what happens in a games development cycle"

Here is what CD Projekt RED said back in late January.

“No. That’s the answer. We are not downgrading it,” he said.

“We are optimizing the game but in a way that doesn’t affect the visuals. So there is a lot of work for us, and this is also one of the reasons why we delayed the game. Because we still have to optimize it to get the best performance for you guys as possible.”

http://www.vg247.com/2015/0...

Still a great looker but they've been telling us for quite sometime the visuals wouldn't be downgraded for high end PC's and only recently recanted that after it came out.

DevilOgreFish4035d ago (Edited 4035d ago )

"Will Downgrades Ever Stop?"

It will if they don't settle for parity. Parity was all the rave last gen now for the witcher 3 everyone's becoming hypocrites.

When AC Unity went for 900p parity people made a huge deal out of it. When a PlayStation game suffers people blame parity but when it involves pc suddenly it's ok.

DevilOgreFish4035d ago

The lead platform should be pc and from there the consoles should be able to get whatever they can handle. No one likes parity, or if not i expect the forums to be silent when it does happen to their platform of choice. (Which i doubt.)

Paytaa4035d ago

The people complaining about a downgrade seriously haven't played The Witcher 3. This is the first game so far on next-gen that truly blew me away.

I_AM_ CANADIAN_19894035d ago (Edited 4035d ago )

Game is amazing on pc, may have been downgraded but it still looks better than anything out to date. Only issue I have is this game was clearly built to show off 900 series nvidia cards. My bro's single 980 handles maxed settings 1080p with hair works off better than my 2 780ti's do. Only benifit I have is I can run hairworks on at 60fps. You can just tell that cd put all theyre optimizing into 900 series cards, but that being said overall this games incredible and I have put tons of hours into it already.

Edit : people that are seriously complaining about witcher 3 and even putting it in the same downgrade category as watch dogs really need to just stop gaming in general because it's obvious you'll never be satisfied.

SnakeCQC4035d ago

I'm replaying witcher 2 before I even start w3 and I'm amazed by how everything looks and sounds in the game. I'm still in the earlier stages and the forest area looks breathe taking! The only people complaining are the trolls who don't have the game.

Paytaa4035d ago

The Witcher 2's environments still look great to this day. Flotsam and the forest outside of it look so good. The attention to detail is insane in all The Witcher games and I commend CDPR for that.

I_AM_ CANADIAN_19894035d ago

You're gunna love witcher 3 the side quests are so good it's hard to distinguish them from main quests. IMO witcher 3 is better than witcher 2 in every way. Def a major step up.

SnakeCQC4035d ago

I expect nothing less from these devs. I generally go crazy when it comes to any sort of choices being ported over so im go to do 2 runs of w2 before i start w3.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio40d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing40d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9240d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit40d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing40d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9240d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
