Yeah, the 360 is slowing down in sales. Should pick up again in the fall. Kudos to the article for recognizing the role of Blu-Ray in selling the PS3.

The real advantage that analysts are ignoring is software sold. That's where companies make all their money (since the PS3 and 360 are sold at a loss and the Wii is only sold at a slight profit). The Xbox 360 has mopped the floor in game sales.

The #50 best selling game for the 360, Fifa 07, sold 780K copies. That is 40K more than the #18 best selling PS3 game, Oblivion, and 30K more than the #32 best selling Wii game, Madden 08 (really, it's more like the #30 since #1 Wii Sports comes with every Wii and #2 Wii Play is usually bought for the controller).

So, financially, despite sales of the console slowing down, the software profits the 360 is experiencing are far more important.

Unrelated final note, a far better gauge of the "console wars" would be to measure how profitable the systems are, rather than the # of units sold.

Only 5 million more sales for PS3 to close the gap! And that's going to happen either late this year or early next (my prediction). The PS3 exclusives are going to bury 360 once and for all. And that's with a one year head start, how embarrasing for Microsoft! LOL.

- Vista isn't doing so well, they're losing ground to Linux and Mac OS X

the Wii is not the competition. it's 360 V PS3. the only real rival to the Wii (ie SD based machine) is the PS2. the 360 is selling less while the PS3 is selling more... it isn't rocket science. Japan has gone for 360, PS3 has overtaken the 360 in Europe and in America the PS3 is slowly making ground. when RFOM2, MS2, Killzone, LBP and Infamous release watch the numbers shrink further. add into that the 80GB PS3 with Blu-ray/Wi-Fi/with a HDD in every machine... Sony will have parity in worldwide sales by January 2009 and parity in America by April 2009, which will effectively give them roughly a 5 million lead over 360 overall. i expect the PS3 to hit 35 million by the end of 2009

One thing that I think will keep Microsoft from selling a lot more consoles down the road is system seller game titles. The Original Xbox was really only known for one big game: Halo, and now that the biggest game on the Xbox platform has been released (Halo 3) there really isn't another exclusive game title that could push 360 console sales like Halo 3 did.

Another future Halo game wont push console sales, because the majority of people that were waiting for a Halo game to drop before getting a 360 already have one.

Basically I think that one of Microsoft's weakness is that they don't have many Original Xbox franchise games to build upon. On the other hand, Sony has many big exclusive Playstation franchise games hitting the PS3 such as Socom Confrontation, Killzone 2, Rachet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction, Jak and Daxter (possibly), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, and many others.

I have both consoles and the God's honest truth is there is only one upcoming game (of the games announced) that I'm really interested in for 360: Gears of War 2.

On the PS3 I'm interested in Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Socom Confrontation, Little Big Planet, the Agency, MAG, and FXIII (I'm getting it on PS3 because there's a chance there will be more content available with the increased capacity of Blu-ray, plus it's being ported to 360 from PS3, not the other way around).

i hate when ppl say that the Wii is a "last-gen" console, as if only graphics matter... everything else the Wii inovated (and the other two are trying to copy by the way) don't matter to be in this generation? ppl that do these kind of things can't even call thenselves gamers...

There never was to begin with, all they can do for now is to throw money at companies to make their games multiplatform to try to stop the ps3 from overtaking the next gen race. Wii sales are phenomenal but in reality since third party software doesn't even sell well in that console, it's sales don't affect us in any way whatsoever. There is no way Assasin's Creed will sell better on that console than crap like wii play, heck not even Mario and Zelda could.

The playstation family as far as first party developers are too strong in numbers and quality, whether little by little or in large spurts the sales will keep on coming.
I was considering buying a 360 again this year for Gears of war 2, I loved the first one. But then again for the price of a new 360 so I can play one game I can get:6 or more of these games this year:

You see, the multiplats combined with ps3 exclusives it's too much good games to pass up just to play 1 system only exclusive on another system, I sold my x360 about 6 months ago and havent looked back. And instead I need a new PC right about this time "wich I can play Gears 2 and Mass Effect" anyways, cuz I like PC gaming a lot as well as console.

Look, the 360 has sold a bucketload of consoles and is still doing so. Its been a great success especially when you consider its up against an institution like Nintendo and the Playstation brand. I think the PS3 will overtake the 360 around the last quarter of 09. That being said, all 3 companies have had a good run this gen. Lets stop bashing.

It might be a bit slow now, but I think it's sales will pick up when the holiday season comes.

For now the console wars continue and get more intense.Microsoft is having some difficulty fighting Nintendo and Sony at the same time.They are also battling Google for a huge slice of the internet pie.Finally Linux and Apple are taking some of the marketshare away from them slowly but surely.

If we have learned anything from history is that fighting a war from three sides is just difficult to overcome.The Germans of World War 1 had to fight the Russians from the east,Allies from the west,and the Serbian/Greek resistance from the south.

The 360 has been out for almost 3 years and has only had 1 price cut in the US. The number of people willing to pay $350 for a console is almost tapped out and the temporary $50 price drop will probably only boost sales for a month or two. In the past most consoles have sold the most when they reach the $199 milestone. I think the rrod slowed Microsoft from putting more resources in to finding ways to lower manufacturing costs. If nothing else the 1 billion dollar hit that they took from extending the warranty has made them want to keep consoles at a fairly high price so they can get some of that money back and so they can continue to generate as much profit as possible after having their first profitable year.

i surely hope the 360 isn't losing ground. as a PS360 owner, i have a vested interest in both systems. i hope Microsoft gives me at least another four years with the system (though they'll probably announce the next iteration late '09 or early '10). all that said, i sincerely hate the practice of companies buying exclusives as i think it stifles true competition. i would gain absolutely no new respect if this turns out to be Microsoft tactic to save the 360. like Sony they need to invest more in in-house development.

It's about the money ppl. Yes ppl are buying a lot of Wii's. But they aren't buying a lot of Wii games, prob because there aren't that many. I don't see the Wii as a true console it's more of a toy and todays consoles aren't toys. Ppl buy a Wii play with it for a few weeks maybe and then it just sits there collecting dust. Not so for the 360/Ps3.

The 360 has the highest sold games per console which is impressive considering the number of 360's. The PS3 is quickly gaining ground on the 360. If you compare first year sales of the PS3 vs 360 the PS3 did a hell of a lot better. But that's due to other factors aswell. Hype, the delay making ppl able to save some money etc. And the game fanatics could buy the 360 first and then the PS3 and didn't really have to choose. It looks like the PS3 will close the gap and overtake the 360. Globally anyway.

But the point is that the next xbox will come out significantly earlier then the PS4. So we are going into a asynchronous console "war". So if the 360 can hold out, so to speak, until its close to the next launch M$ will consider that a "win". And the Ps3 would sail on by when the next xbox came out.

I happen to believe that M$ buying up exclusives is a good thing. I don't want any games to be exclusive to either console.

M$ was shouting that they had 20 Million consoles sold. Well how many of those is actually functioning ? And the same goes for Sony's 140 million Ps2 army. How many of those have been regulated to paperweight duty ?

It would be more interesting to know how many active gamebuying console owners there are.

Since ps3/wii launch 360 has lost ground. They should be increasing in sales by the year not decreasing. They went from selling what 10mil first year ALONE to 7 mil 2nd year and its only decreasing. The 360 should have well over 20mil consoles yet they dont. People simply dont want the 360 because its not what they want. 360 is like 50 dollars mroe than a Wii and Wii is slaughtering it.

Everyone can see it coming. Sony have already outsold 360 in Europe and Japan in total numbers and they've been outselling 360 in North America for months and months.

Now that MS are targeting the Wii audience they're aiming at the bigger (Wii/Casual) market but IMO they'll fail at that.

Casual gamers can get their fix of Singing games, Camera games and Waggle games from PS2 or Wii without shelling out on a system that sits somewhere between the Wii and PS3.

Wii is clear and it's target audience is clear.

Sony is clear and knows it's audience.

MS are scrambling for anything they can get and if it weren't for Halo they'd be dead in the water by now.
