Jeff Buckland reports:
''Battlestations: Midway was one of the first strategy games to hit the Xbox 360. Its tactical options of controlling naval battles in the Pacific theater of World War II along with the ability to jump into the perspective of any ship or aircraft in your considerable forces added a welcome element of action to the experience. Even though the game was considered a success, Midway was still difficult to get into with a learning curve that demanded a dedication from players that may already be averse to learning the strategy elements of their game. Much of that is being addressed with Eidos' new sequel, Battlestations: Pacific.
The first game took players from the battle of Pearl Harbor up through the battle of Midway, and this sequel picks up there and delivers the US naval forces up to Okinawa in Japan. The Japanese also have their own campaign, a theoretical winning campaign that starts at Pearl Harbor and ends up entirely differently than what happened in those fierce fights that ended WW2. And while a historical focus is of particular interest to the developers, some liberties are taken to put together exciting multi-phase missions where you might need to establish a base, take on an incoming force, and only then start your real goal.''

The battle for free game supremacy intensifies this month with both Microsoft and Sony bringing their A game! Whose lineup is best this month?
Gotta say that it's a great time to be a gamer. Sure, not all the "free" games are great, and some I have played, but having those games on that list that I never really thought of, or just never gave a chance, and now they offered with my online subscription, makes them ALL something to play.
I give the nod to MS this month. I cannot fire up Tomb Raider fast enough. What a great game to get for free, or rather with gold.
Please don't start this. We were all getting along so well. Please don't start another thread of lists of games 90% of which the commenters have probably never even hard of, paragraphs of hate and fact checking and stat posting and sales figures being deep-throated and the cowpat piles of 'indiestation' and 'xboners' being thrown across the thread at eachother and the donwplaying of exclusives
Topics like this are literally ONLY based in opinion. Some people, and there's plenty, don't give a toss about tomb raider, crysis, deer god etc and some people only care about titles such as super time force etc (amazing game btw). You decide as an individual gamer. The title 'showdown' just shows how journalists love to create arguments.
Personally, I prefer Xbox's this month, but I've played all of the ones given away except Deer god, PS has more stuff I haven't played except STFU (not that kind of STFU), so I can't really decide on who has best quality to me, but from what I know, have played and have seen of all of the games, Xbox takes it for me this month. Loved Crysis 3, Tomb raider I loved and I must have spent over 150 hours on battletstation pacific as a kid

Neil writes "August was one of the best ever months for the Xbox Games With Gold scheme with some cracking titles given away for free to each and every Xbox live Gold member. But August can be firmly placed in the past as September kicks in. Surely Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners should have another decent time in the free stakes?"
4 games a month free for X1 owners with games with gold. It's great they are doing this.
September may not be seller but they are decent titles.
Games with Gold has come a long way and now adding BC it will be one of the best services available.
Lately Gold games are quite better than Plus one's, and that's coming from someone who is exclusively a Playstation owner.
Considering I pay £21 a yr for gold and £36 a year for ps+ gold on cd keys Xbox live is a absolute steal with gwg
