No.. well not touchscreen mobile gaming anyway.

mikeslemonade4021d ago

Boycott and try to ban mobile games. Mobile games will regress the quality of video games and it will take us many years to get back to today's quality.

maniacmayhem4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

Ignore Square, Sega, Capcom, Nintendo and other Japanese and western devs making a ton of cash and putting more focus in an already huge mobile market.

Kind of hard to ignore.

Nio-Nai4021d ago

Home consoles failed and no one thought they would ever get back.

So honestly, I wouldn't be surprised.

Tony999Montana4021d ago

It is if you have a bit more of an open mind and actually think about the future rather than just what we have now.. Imagine when all phones are powerful enough to run highest quality games and stream to any tv. Then you bluetooth a mouse and keyboard or a controller to it. Why would anyone buy a games console when we reach this point?

Ultimately everything's just a computer and then you attach screens and accessories to it, whether it be a console, phone, laptop, smartwatch or you name it. The drive and huge investment towards more powerful and efficient mobile processors, imo, means that everything will run off our phone in the future and we'll just have different size screens to connect to it.

HighResHero4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

If you think about it a little more you will see that unless consoles are deliberately phased out, they will become more powerful also.
In 4 or 5 years(or more) when "mobiles" are on par with ps4 for example, much more powerful GPUs will already be available(actually they already are).
Looks like you might be forgetting about space, energy storage, thermal considerations, etc.
Obviously it isn't this simple but I'm not here to write a book.

LifeInNZ4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

@HighRes

Of course things keep advancing however, would you rather have a mobile device that does AAA gaming or would you rather have a console that stays at home under the TV?

I imagine a time (some are doing it now) where you get home, dock your smart device next to your TV, pick up a controller and start playing games. Services like PS Now signal a change in the way games will be delivered and consumed. There is nothing stopping Sony delivering PS4 gaming experiences to smartphones and tablets right now except they want to sell PS4s. Imagine over night suddenly having a potential consumer base of over 200,000,000+ without having to develop and launch a new console.

At the moment people are stuck in a touchscreen mindset which is being far too short sighted.

@lifeinnz

There is a device that does what you described- the Vita. It hasn't exactly been an overwhelming success.

When people talk about monotreme gaming, right now it primarily means touchscreen

rainslacker4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

Until mobile devices OS's allow a majority of the power and resources that are available in them be surrendered to developers, it will not replace consoles or PC's for gaming. With the amount of bloat that mobile devices have due to service providers and the OS makers themselves, you would need a ton more power than would be provided by the most entry level of computers/consoles.

Mobile device makers care nothing about advancing the gaming market. NONE. How anyone can consider it the future with mobile in it's current state is beyond me. It took 10 years for it to get to a point where mobile is mostly time wasting micro-transactions which most gamers don't take seriously. Since that model works, how in the world can anyone consider that gaming is going to advance on mobile in any way that is meaningful for the current gamer.

If people want mobile gaming like on the consoles, then go buy a mobile gaming machine like the Vita or the 3DS. Shield maybe if it ever got support. But mobile tablets and phones as primary gaming machines? Yeah OK, Sure, whatever you say.

There's a place for mobile gaming, but to replace more traditional gaming it's going to take a major change from a company that actually cares about making it into a serious venture along those lines. Developers of AAA games are not considering mobile as a primary platform, and it's only the publishers which get those older AAA games ported to these devices.

No and never ask that question again.

Germany74021d ago

I really hope it's not, even if it's huge nowadays.

SaveFerris4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

Why would you want to play games like Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, and GTA on a device with a tiny screen and terrible battery life?
Personally, I love my Vita but it is difficult to have a decent gaming session on it outside of my home and I don't use my phone for gaming.

MazzingerZ4021d ago

Who say those games will be there? I think the question is relevant when it comes to business model: less investment, more revenue.

If the future is mobil gaming then my days as gamer are counted.

But honestly, I think only few companies would go 100% that way as it's a big risk since those are not dedicated gaming platforms...technique will change and so UI interaction...companies would need to keep up with new technique, rebuild engines and so on....

Sony, MSFT tell you in the other hand: this is my new console and it will be around during minimum 10 years

For sometime, I'd been contemplating getting a Shield to replce my Steam Link hw as the Shield is a more capable 4K/60 device for streaming. Happy they notified us before I finally decided to pull the trigger on getting one.

amazinglover1248d ago

You can still stream using the shield just not natively, you'll have download and use the stream link app on the shield.

They likely are not supporting it natively to save money on developing and maintaining the feature and letting valves app do it instead.

I hope this doesn't end the Moonlight service functionality

... and yet no support for PS4

Cernunnos1943d ago

PS4 controller works just fine with mine.

Vits1944d ago

It's nice to have the support. But without the unique functions of the DualSense I wouldn't go for it unless you already have a PS5 laying around. As there are many other controllers compatible with the system that will also cost much less.

1nsomniac1943d ago

I don’t think anyone would be planing on buying the PS5 controller for the shield specifically. The idea is that if you have a ps5 with the controller and would prefer to use it on the shield instead of the supplied shield controller, then you can.

Vits1943d ago

Is more of general advice. For PC gaming is exactly the same thing, while the DS4 was a fairly popular option for having a good quality/price ratio the Dual Sense is better to be avoided as you are not going to get anything out of it's special features. But will be paying the premium anyway.

Also only older models and the Gaming Edition of the Shield have a supplied controller. For all the rest including the newer cylindrical and Pro editions you have to supply your own if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it.

1nsomniac1943d ago (Edited 1943d ago )

The cylindrical one doesn’t come with a controller. The rest do, there is no gaming edition. I have one.

Vits1943d ago

Yeah you either got a old model or got the Gaming package and didn't notice. The newest 2019 version of it does not come with a controller.

1nsomniac1943d ago

According to that your right the newest pro version doesn’t come with a controller, which seems ridiculous to remove a bundled item and still charge the same if not more for it.

I have the 2017 version.

Vits1943d ago (Edited 1943d ago )

To be fair. They did also change the SoC of the units.
Both 2019 versions use the X1+ that is a 25% performance bump over the normal X1 of the older versions. And it really makes a difference for some things like GC/Wii emulation.

But it is worth $60 (controller price)? It's very debatable.

Just ordered my Shield T.V (new tube looking one), coming tomorrow, it should pair nice with my pc. This is great news as I have both PS5 and Xbox controllers no need to buy another controller.

ouch that home hardware is lacking

Mr_Writer852296d ago

But the content is not. And that's the key.

I'm going to try this simply because my laptop is old and I have no desire/room/time to buy/build a gaming PC.

Yet I have a big library of Steam games my laptop struggles to play. I can simply dip in and out as and when I choose and play these games for a small fee.

When I've had my fill, I can cancel, no extra cost.

Google hardware and even tech is superior. However, cost and content wise, it blows it out of the water.

VincenteFox2295d ago

I didn't mention it in the piece, because it wasn't really relevant (since I was downscaling to take the comparison image) but the home hardware is a 5700XT, a 3700X, 32 gb ram at 3600 mhz and an X570 board.
