Nintendo has recently restored Wii U Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon online after five months of being offline.

How, exactly, did Splatoon reach heights rivalled only by Pokémon in Japan? New IPs from the House of Mario appear as often as shiny Pocket Monsters, yet typically move comparatively mediocre numbers or fall into relative obscurity behind the premium marques of Mario, Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Pokémon. Take Pikmin and ARMS, for example, which we adore but struggle to compete with the tentpole franchises when it comes to sales numbers or mainstream mindshare.
So, again, how has Splatoon risen to become one of Nintendo's most important series in Japan?
It does look fun, but a competitive shooter without voice chat? How are you supposed to coordinate strategy?
I'll can wait as I'm already sold. I have never played a game quite like this before. I need to catch up on some of my older games anyway and State of Decay is taking up a lot of my time at the moment as well.
I was NOT impressed by the demo, beta, or whatever it's called. So much that I'm no longer going to pre-order it (but instead, borrow it first). Moving left of right with the right stick and Aiming with the motion controls is REALLY difficult, like trying to learn to use 3 analog sticks with only two hands. Turn it off and use only the right stick, the dead zones and sensitivity (even adjusted) is almost just as difficult and, just weird. That is coming from someone really good at shooters! And get this, you can't even change anything to do with the controls, or even quit and match, without turning off the Wii U, or grinding through the match and then quitting. Really?
And all those on neogaf saying there is no lag; really? They've obviously never heard of lag compensation and smoothing to hide it. I died without even being rolled over and had seen multiple double kills.
