Could Splatoon Be The Saviour The Wii U Needs?

EB: Splatoon, the brand new IP coming straight from the big dog itself Nintendo, just had an extensive Direct broadcast detailing the game and it sure seems like it will be offering players one helluva lot of content. For those who are not in the know, Splatoon focuses on characters known as Inklings whom fight for supremacy against another team using their team’s ink to cover the map. The end result is determined by a cat who decides on the victor based on how much of the map is covered.

From that short synopsis above, it seems pretty plain to see that Splatoon will be one special kind of special, which if we look at Nintendo’s track record, is most certainly something to embrace.

Come on not these articles again...
Its not nice anymore.
Its great to have high hopes but at least have a more compelling basis like a AAA Full HD Metroid Prime as far as Ninty shooters go.

NO definitely no ...it seems a very well made game and very fun (personally i m fan of third person and fulled with all the military themed stuff) ..but i doubt it would save anything like raise the sales of the console itself ..though will do some good sales as a game

The only thing that can save the WiiU is a real Pokemon AAA mmo.

Concertoine4043d ago

Metroid might save the console for you but not to the masses. Metroid is histroically one of Nintendo's highest budget, lowest selling series.

More of these articles, when will it get through your thick, close-minded head. WiiU doesn't need saving. It has a ton of great games and a ton more on the way. How DARE Nintendo give us a fun system with fun games. P2W and Microtransactions forever /s...

"WiiU doesn't need saving."

I can understand the argument that the Wii U needs saving, but I will never understand the argument that it's possible for a single game to make a system go from unsuccessful to successful. What typically happens is either the price drops to the point where people can easily justify the cost or a series of strong titles release and people break down.

With that being said, I think Splatoon will be an amazing game, but I don't think it will be a sales machine. In many ways thats a shame, but at the same time I get it. Then again, I thought the same about Animal Crossing and I was dead wrong about that.

as a team multi-player online game without voice-chat, no it won't...

As a game that delivers so much constant positional information, on screen and on controller, that VC wouldn't make a difference in team coordination, yes it will.

Why Is Splatoon So Popular In Japan?

How, exactly, did Splatoon reach heights rivalled only by Pokémon in Japan? New IPs from the House of Mario appear as often as shiny Pocket Monsters, yet typically move comparatively mediocre numbers or fall into relative obscurity behind the premium marques of Mario, Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Pokémon. Take Pikmin and ARMS, for example, which we adore but struggle to compete with the tentpole franchises when it comes to sales numbers or mainstream mindshare.

So, again, how has Splatoon risen to become one of Nintendo's most important series in Japan?
