Way cool. The Xbox One has always had a litany of really neat media elements, but this is one of those features that can really transform it into a true all-in-one media box. Bring it on.

gameon19853956d ago

People can disagree with you, but there is almost literally nothing you can't do on Xbox one. Sling TV and the HDMI in makes it a cable box, Skype makes it a phone mirror cast just makes it awesome, you will son be able to screen games to windows devices, and the list of features goes on and on. I don't see how anyone realistically compare the PS4 features to Xbox One.

SpaceRanger3956d ago

Who is talking about PS4? Stay on topic...

OT:
It'll be a good feature for those with an extra HDD and who use their Xbox primarily for watching tv. I wonder if it would work while playing games? Like record at the same time and then watch whatever you recorded afterward.

@ gameon1985

Xbox One features:
HDMI in (TV functionality that requires a cable box, Xbox one is not a standalone cable box)
Sling TV (TV streaming)
Skype
Miracast support (stream video)
Remote play to Windows 10 devices (upcoming, restricted to same network)
Probably more

PS4 features:
Share play
Spotify
PS Vue (TV streaming, nor channels than Sling TV)
PS Now (stream PS3 games for those that do not own a PS3)
Remote play to PS Vita (not restricted to same network)
Remote play to PS TV (restricted to same network)
Media streaming via PS TV (upcoming, similar to Miracast)
Probably more

That's how someone realistically compares features between the two :)

On topic:
TV DVR is a nice feature, but I imagine it will eat up HDD space (there is no mention of it supporting External HDDs).

GenuineGamer3956d ago

@r2oB

Xbox one fully supports external storage. No single app or feature needs to support it for it to work because it's a system wide feature.

r2oB3956d ago

@ genuine gamer

Yeah, that makes sense. It's just odd the way the article just mentions the internal HDD.

Automatic793956d ago (Edited 3956d ago )

@R2ob

Other features you fail to mention

EA access play all EA games incredible value
Xbox Smartglass, stay in touch with friends, share videos, see gamerscores
Game clips 60fps
Windows 10
Pandora ability to create station and play music
Snap on any app while your playing
Video chat and voice chat
Voice messages to Xbox 360

Just to name a few more features that gamers will remember

mikeslemonade3956d ago (Edited 3956d ago )

You can list a bunch of features but how pratical are they? I still have to pay for the subcription for the DVR.

The X1 is just another portal with an extra step to use those applications. You have to be a specific audience use this. In this day in age most already have a bunch of device that do these things. My PC renders the X1 obsolete. I still can't even get the sound to hdmi pass through X1 to my monitor.

Now the PS4 features are relevant because they do things that make more pratical. Better free games, game share, and the broadcast features are better than the X1.

r2oB3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

@ Michaellito

Fair enough.

But I also forgot...
- PS app (similar to smart glass with the ability to stay in touch with friends, view trophies info, and access live from play station on the go)
- game clips in 15 minute length (i personally use this to upload battlefield 4 matches to YouTube, it's actually very practical IMO)
- live from playstation (supports twitch AND ustream)
- cross save (play a game and save it, then resume it on another platform like the ps vita)
- cross play (multiplayer against other platforms like PS3, PS Vita, and PC... This is a feature that is supported but used at the developers discretion).

My point was that both console have a bunch of nice features. But a lot of Xbox only gamers seem to think that the Xbox One if filled with features while the PS4 has none of its own. Which is a myth. It seems to be perpetuated by the fact that most of the positive Xbox one news is in regards to features and software updates. For example, this article.

wegetsignalx3947d ago

Both consoles have unique features that the other doesn't. It is not at all a shutout for Xbox.

It is a great feature, but honestly I think it has missed the boat. Many people are dropping cable as we know it, and seem to stream more. A good internet connection, with decent usage and a lil know how with Kodi/Xbmc boxes are changing the way we watch TV. I wonder what it will be like in 5 years or so. Cable is just too over priced, and more people are becoming much more tech savvy. Amazon now sells android boxes to stream all the free channels....

magiciandude3956d ago (Edited 3956d ago )

But it can be useful for hooking up any of those boxes to your Xbox One and record the content you're streaming...

GenuineGamer3956d ago

Xbox one will have no problems taking advantage of future online streaming services.

Especially when you consider windows 10 and universal apps.

rainslacker3954d ago (Edited 3954d ago )

Curious why this is a good feature since there is no TV/Cable tuner within the system. How exactly are you going to receive the TV/Cable signal to record it in the first place? If you are using a pass through signal already, it's likely coming from a DVR, since that's about all that's offered nowadays for a cable receiver.

Maybe over the internet or something, but those are streamed, and I fail to see why on demand would be recorded to a local hard drive when it's on demand.

Not saying it's not nice to have good features, but I fail to see why this would not be redundant.

Now if they release a new X1 SKU with a tuner in it then this would be a great feature. I find that more plausible than a DVR to record the content that exist on your current DVR.

RaTaTaT3956d ago

I would love its. The only thing missing from my set up is a DVR.

Rookie_Monster3956d ago

Why not? It has 2 usb3 ports that you can connect as many external HDD as you desire. It is invetible and the only console with enough storage to pull it off.

TheCommentator3956d ago

16tb per external drive vs. 2tb internal? Yeah, it's not even close.

GenuineGamer3956d ago

@Rookie_Monster

XBO has 3 x usb3.0 ports.

Rookie_Monster3956d ago (Edited 3956d ago )

I know, but only 2 are on the rear of the console to hide the external HDD away. It would look out-of-place and an eye sore if the usb ports were in the front and having the cable protruding of the front or on the side.

GenuineGamer3956d ago (Edited 3956d ago )

@Rookie_Monster

Yeah, i use one of the rear ports for my games/apps external, and i have another external with all my movies and music i just plug into the side usb port so i can easily unplug and take it with me.

I find it strange that there are no front usb ports but at least there is one on the side for quick access.

Kingscorpion19813956d ago

Majority of people already have a DVR

littletad3956d ago

Says who? Care to show a link to these statistics?

deadpoolio3163955d ago

Anyone literally on the planet that has any of the 99% of satellite and cable providers...DVRs are standard equipment genius...Unless your still using a box from 1995 there are zero reputable cable companies that dont use DVRs standard

rainslacker3954d ago

I think you can still get a non-DVR receiver from the standard cable company. It's typically for people that get basic cable and probably don't care about DVR. Since every cable package from every cable company includes one DVR with the package, I'd imagine that most people this kind of thing would benefit would have no use for it, and since there is no TV tuner within the system, it wouldn't be usable for standard broadcast.

The X1 doesn't have a cable coax input to begin with, so some sort of external tuner/converter will still be necessary.

In any case, this feature would only allow you to record one program at a time due to the inputs, so it's much more limited than the standard cable box.

Yeah! Store all your shows on that massive 500GB HDD!
