A Disappointing Xenoblade Chronicles X Comparison

So Xenoblade Chronicles X is coming to the Wii U. Good news for those looking forward to a sprawling RPG. Slightly less so if you remember the game’s 2013 trailer.

vishmarx4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

'If this was produced by Ubisoft the Internet will rip Mother Gaia a new hole. Buuuuuuut it’s not, so it will probably get a free pass.'Because nintendo.

cleft54046d ago

The reason people would react so adversely towards Ubisoft is because they have a long history of doing stuff like that. Look at Watchdogs for one. Meanwhile, Nintendo has a long history of delivering amazing games. So yes, Nintendo will get the benefit of a doubt and based on all the footage they have shown so far, Xenoblade Chronicles X looks like it is going to be an amazing game with amazing content. Would I like this game to have better graphics? Sure, why not. At the same time, the content they have shown is truly impressive. Its not that they are getting a pass, its that people are genuinely excited about what they have shown so far.

PlayableGamez4046d ago

It's still downgraded. No matter how you spin it, Nintendo pulled an Ubisoft.

CoffeeCakeMuffin4046d ago

"Ubisoft is because they have a long history of doing stuff like that. Look at Watchdogs for one."
No they don't. During the new console generation developers usually downgrade their games after being shown, it's all to build hype for the new console generation.

"So yes, Nintendo will get the benefit of a doubt "
You're proving vishmarx's point, being a Nintendo fanboy giving Monolith a pass for downgrading the game because "It's Nintendo! They made good games!" as if that was a valid excuse.

Gazondaily4046d ago

Yeah but thats a massive downgrade. The content may be good but that odesn't change the fact that this is massively misrepresenting the game.

"So yes, Nintendo will get the benefit of a doubt and based on all the footage they have shown so far, "

And they don't deserve that benefit of the doubt because its a big downgrade. Ubisoft have delivered some amazing gems too. No one is excused from delivering a product that is inferior in one aspect like this.

Did the devs actually come out to confirm the downgrade? If not then they need to be criticised heavily for it.

Griever4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

A lie is a lie. Nintendo deceived people when they showed the first trailer. They promised people that they will be playing this awesome looking next-gen game on Wii U but the actual game turned out to be nowhere near that initial trailer. They knew the hardware capabilities of the Wii U well but they still chose to mislead people with the first trailer. I remember how Nintendo and its fans were trying to prove at the time that Wii U was very powerful because of its revolutionary GPGPU and this trailer was often used as a proof. Nobody was willing to believe that it was a little more powerful than PS360. Now they pretend that they never believed the trailer and it does not matters if Nintendo lied. Nintendo always get a free pass in everything!

@mamotte

So does two wrongs make a right? Is that what you are saying. Those games and the related developers did not get a free pass and were criticized heavily. The same should go for Nintendo. But Noooooo; when Nintendo does it its completely fine and acceptable. I do not see an internet outrage anywhere as in the case of those games.

mamotte4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

@ those up there

"Pulled an Ubisoft"
"A lie is a lie"
"Fanboy giving a pass because it's..."

wonderfulmonkeyman4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

@ greiver
If people could overlook and love a slight drop in graphics in the case of games like Bioshock Infinite and still buy it in droves, why can't we do so here?
Why are we being villainized for giving such a small drop in graphics a pass when many did it before, if Infinity's sales are any indication?

Unlike Watch Dogs, this one isn't attempting to sell itself off of graphics.
There's no outrage because we knew this would happen and because the devs aren't known for trying to push visuals before everything else, as Ubisoft did with Watch Dogs.
Even with the "downgrade" the game still looks gorgeous, and it is confirmed to be massively stuffed with content that will make it worth owning.
Unless you're a graphics whore, of course, which most Nintendo fans are NOT, and thus still feel the game looks great.
Oh, and for the record, I picked up Bioshock Infinite for PS3, despite knowing about the E3 downgrade in visuals.
I'm not so shallow as to hold so minor a difference in graphics against a game.

This downgrade isn't on the same level as Watch Dogs.
People in here are asking us to pretend it is, so that they feel justified in eventually riding the negativity wave all the way down to the point where we shouldn't get the game because they "lied about it".

Griever4046d ago (Edited 4045d ago )

@wonderfulmonkeyman

The point still stands that Nintendo lied and deceived, regardless of the amount of content in the game or its artistic beauty, and nobody cares about it just because its Nintendo. If they showed the game as it looks today two years ago, the console would have gotten a lot of slack for being weak and underpowered. The downgrade is not minor in any way. The lightning, character models, textures, foliage and many other things are heavily downgraded from the E3 2013 trailer. The only thing that looks good are the monsters and strangely they look much better than the actual heroes of the story. I am amused at the developers' priorities. Nintendo used deception to generate hype and they should be held to the same standards as other companies.

EDIT: The gameplay of the game is yet to be tested by anybody. The game has been shown mostly as presentations and there isnt a single hands-on impression for the game. Isnt that strange? Therefore, you cannot vouch for the quality of the gameplay just yet. For now the gameplay looks like something out of Monster Hunter where players do hunting quests endlessly. The game is getting a free pass because of the false hype built by the reveal trailer and the blind faith in Nintendo by its fans.

mamotte4046d ago

@Griever

Title of the article "A Disappointing Xenoblade Chronicles X Comparison"

Sorry to point the obvious, but this article is proof that people care. Now, the question is, should we care? Bioschock infinite turned out to be a great game despite the downgrade. Uncharted 3 turned out to be a great game despite the downgrade. The Xenoblade video has, like, 30 minutes of real footage you can criticize or admire, like everyone else. The point is people isn' reacting. People is over reacting. It's not the first time this happens, Watchdogs wasn't the first one downgrading a game, other big studios like Naughty Dog has "lied" to us before, I mean... I dont get it.

I'm not saying "lying" (Man, that sounds so dramatic and personal) is ok, but be real. Nintendo isn't the first one, this isn't an exception to "let's doom it all" rule, and, hell, Nintendo is the "let's hate it" company of the last years. Your very definition of "free pass" is very twisted, sir.

I dont know what rock were you hiding under the last years, but Nintendo is being punished and doomed hard every single day.

wonderfulmonkeyman4046d ago

@ greiver
"The point still remains" that you are villainising us for giving the same pass to this, that many did to Bioshock Infinity, and that your trying to use that as a way to lead into telling us we shouldn't buy the game due to this "lie".
You speak of holding Nintendo to a standard?
We are.
The same one people on other systems use to give games with good gameplay a pass, despite graphics not being as good as previews made them out to be.
Or, conversely, the opposite standard of those that allow a game's graphics to make up for their lack of above average gameplay, yet still buying them anyway.

We are holding this game up to a standard that doesn't condemn it for not having the same graphics as early trailers suggest.
We're holding it to the standards of gameplay first.
Which is a standard the whole industry should learn from.

You're also blowing the downgrade out of proportion.
It's nowhere near as bad as the Watch Dogs debacle, where the game was doing its best to sell off of graphics, on two consoles that had brought the graphics war to the biggest head it's seen since the days of Sega vs Nintendo.

NoctisPendragon4046d ago

Omg man it was meant to be a secret but you said it out loud !!!

Nevers0ft4046d ago

I think people would be less forgiving if the difference was like night and day - as was the case with Watch_Dogs. That isn't the case here, it's downgraded (or maybe simply different, the game isn't out yet, we don't know). The before/after differences are far more subtle with Xenoblade.

N4g_null4046d ago

They only thing changed was gamma levels and a model or two. It actually looks better. Yet ubi showed a pc build with partical effects and resolution along with crazy rendering that just wasn't possible.

The impressive light beams are still intact there models still have mostly there same majority and so does their texturing.

I mean if you need something to complain about you must hate gaming. It seems nintendo is delivering the goods. We get a huge rpg, cool mechs, crazy depth, crazy battles, tons of customizable points and it's monolith they do great epic stories. Even then online looks cool. I'll be playing this one for years.

pivotplease4046d ago

The main thing I noticed was the difference in floor textures. Many of the differences do seem aesthetic and not graphical though from what I can tell. The downgrade isn't the worst I've seen.

Concertoine4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

The only downgrade is the one cutscene in the base. We dont even know the story behind it. The outdoor environments, AKA what everyone is impressed with, still look amazing and have only gotten better.

This is nothing even in the same realm of Far Cry 3, Watch Dogs, or Aliens. To say Nintendo is as bad as those companies in this respect is nothing short of hyperbole. Not only because this is the only game they've ever shown that looked different at release, but because this is ONE cutscene of one game.

Magicite4046d ago

If visual downgrade will be only fault, then this game is lucky, many modern AAA projects get ''downgrade'' in almost everything.
Story and gameplay is what makes JRPGS amazing.

fatneal4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

dude ubisoft has screwed us over so many times they dont deserve the benefit of the doubt....what history does monolift soft have of letting us down?

mamotte4046d ago

It's a free pass beacuse at least we have hour and a half of videos showing how the final game will look and play, with detailed information on game mechanics. But of course, at the very end all people can look it's the 30 seconds sequence that got downgraded. Have you ever seen this kind of thing, on any videogame? Man, if the order did this, it'd showed 1/3 of the actual full game, full of generic QTE and cover shooter gameplay from 9 years ago. But people just see what they want to see.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

so one area oppose to many areas in this huge open world = a downgrade.

This area in video is like less than .05%

Let alone this is MONOLITH SOF first HD game ever developed.

As oppose to Ubisoft who been doing HD development since 2006.

Big_Game_Hunters4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

Wait so gameplay is supposed to look like cutscenes now? I know you haven't been keeping up with this game and are only here because its a chance to criticise Nintendo so i'll explain. it has already been confirmed that the graphics were improved since that E3 2013 trailer.

What you are complaining about is that the recreation of that scene using in game footage doesn't look as good as a cutscene originally used. Have you watched the rest of the trailer? Why would websites just now make a comparison if we have had hours of gameplay footage and no one noticed any kind of downgrade. Think about it silly boy.

KaladinStormblessed4046d ago

You make a very good point. It is in fact just a cutscene, and the rest of the game has been looking quite stunning. We all know the graphics aren't top notch, but I honestly don't care. The visual style and cool planet are amazing "graphics" to me. And I care about the gameplay ore anyway. If it's a fun game, I'm getting it.

herbs4046d ago

All developers do this and this is a minor downgrade compared to most. When the game isn't finished they show what they are trying to attain with the final product. Beloved Naughty Dog has done the exact same thing with every Uncharted game ever and to a much larger degree the latest being a substantial graphical downgrade and halfing the framerate which greatly effects gameplay. Sony fans continue to praise regardless same situation but exasperated further and those are the type of gamers that care more for graphics over substance. Nintendo gamers generally just want a polished fun game which this will deliver regardless of a slight graphical downgrade. All you gamers out there who have graphics as your top priority for gaming are amateurs...

shaw984046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

Comparing this downgrade to watch dogs is stupid. Watch dogs had a major difference in graphic change. However, this downgrade is very minor and understandable. Xenoblade X takes up almost all the wii u's disk space to the point of Nintendo considering on if they should make it a multilayered disk. Not only did they have years to add so much, but in order to do they may have had to lower the textures a very tiny bit. This is because they are literally pushing the wii u to its limits. Watch dogs on the other hand did not and does not have that excuse.

3-4-54045d ago

* It's not Downgraded.....it runs smoother now than it did before, which in the end is going to matter more to those who actually play the game rather than just look at pictures.

filthy troll

DC7774045d ago

Go ahead, try and convince everyone there's been a "downgrade" when it obviously is in game footage of a scene that wasn't visually impressive to begin with. Oh wait these are the same people who think The W3 looks good on consoles.

Yep it's a crime that it looks better now because the actually worked on the game and added things.

Spenok4045d ago

This is an unfortunate downgrade, one that shouldn't go unnoticed, or ignored by the developers OR the fans. At least come out and explain why it needed to happen.

In the end Nintendo and Monolith have always made great games I enjoy, so in the end if this is a good game I will be happy. Mind you happy with the game, not the downgrade, because this is pretty massive. Personally I don't give them a pass because of who they are, that's a BS reason. And this is coming from someone who enjoyed games like Watch Dogs.

AJBACK2FRAG4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

Kotaku? Really??? Please. This is going to be an incredible video game to be enjoyed by hopefully many, many new and old Wii U owners and the Japanese Wii U bundle looks soooo pretty. I was talking to a friend of mine on Miiverse and we were discussing different Wii U games that have been released and have yet to be released and I was like wtf the Wii U's in last place????

gameboy14046d ago

This is a dynamic cut scene depending on character used ect and with dynamic weather I'm sure it's nothing to worry about going off latest video the actual in game graphics are better then this cut scene way better so what's the problem ??

Neonridr4046d ago

lol, we are talking about 2 years later between videos. The majority of the differences in these videos are cosmetic like the gear the character is wearing or the style of the mech he climbs into. That has nothing to do with being a downgrade. The lighting has changed a bit, but it honestly looked blown way out of proportion and overdone in the original reveal. It still looks fine, and at the end of the day the game is going to give you hundreds of hours of gameplay in an open world setting with online co-op with graphics that still look great.

Activemessiah4046d ago

Wait.. were people really expecting PS4/PC graphics? talk about naive

gameboy14046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

First off Xenoblade X graphics in game are better then anything on ps4 and second not 1 ps4 game matches pc in graphics look at Watchdogs,ProjectCARS,ect ect come on your delusional if you think ps4 is in some league of its own in graphics...

ps4=178GB bandwidth RAM
WiiU=562.2GB bandwidth RAM
Xbox1=170GB bandwidth RAM

This proves WiiU can handle graphics and resolution much better then the other 2 END OF as bandwidth RAM is basically your graphics memory ...the in game graphics on XenobladeX are of the best quality for a game that has the biggest open world of any other game.

The best graphics on ps4 are basically on games where technically it's nothing impresive I mean Destiny is crap its got average graphics and its not even open world let alone the biggest open world game..basically if Xenoblade X open world was half the size it could of looked twice as good and so on....

Bloodborn or what ever its called has zero abmition it's why the graphics look good i mean zero depth of field and corridor type gameplay WOW SO POWERFUL...

N4g_null4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

I'll say the wiiu tech is different. I do love srams bandwidth. The system is balanced yet the ps4 and Xbox 1 are shooting for pc level graphics without having the correct specs. Which is why they struggle to output pc level graphics. Nintendo shoots for a good presentation with a focus on game play and clean design of its art.

Another question is how many cores are they using in this game? Another thing is I haven't seen a loading screen yet...hmmmm. almost 20 gigs of game and I'm sure that number includes compressed assets. That is a feat right there. I'll be using the hdd anyway. My 2 terabytes external will love this game.

I'm glad nintendo isn't into the specs car salesman way of promoting their system. The key is it is capable and it's up to the games to show this. So far we have a nice and steady progression.

The spec game only works if the people are gullible enough to believe numbers rather than output on finished products. Unfortunately Sony comes up so much because they are the classic example of over promised products. The ps1 had the emotion engine and no zbuffer. Result horrible texture wrapping. The ps2 has claimed to have a dma bus that was light years ahead of anything but even the GameCube had the better version of res evil. Then we have the cell. Really good at bluerays... yet ducks at almost everything else. When you look back everyone admits how bad these Sony chips where but during the time everyone was willing to believe and hope it was different.

This is why Sony gets so much reaction from the Internet when things are downgraded. People buy Sony for power not the hope of power or the illusion of power. I'm not saying they make crap but I am saying they have a habit of misrepresentation due to being ambitious and hoping programming can fix all.

Luckily nintendo is about good games first. Everything else is a plus.

Nevers0ft4046d ago

I'm a pretty big Nintendo fan-boy but even I'm embarrassed by this. If you don't understand the technology, stop pretending you do because there's people faaaaaar more technical than you on this site. Memory bandwidth is only a small portion of the equation - all that bandwidth is redundant if the rest of the console isn't fast enough to utilise it.

Stick with what you know before those bubbles evaporate entirely, you're making a fool of yourself.

Dude, no.
It's true that a lot of games lately have been all realism-focused bland graphics and little new gameplay, but that does NOT matter in this case.
THE WII U'S GRAPHICAL CAPABILITIES ARE NOT ABOVE THE PS4 AND XBONE.
This game looks gorgeous, but please, let's not pretend that the Wii U is a PC pretender.

The game looks great. As far as PS4 graphics, Less Bloodborne/The Order the Wii U is holding its own graphically. Smash Bros 1080p/60fps multiplayer is a great example.

Hey, I am in no way saying Wii U is nearly as powerful as PS4, but it still has proven itself much more capable than last gen.

The hours of gameplay I have seen of this game, as a finished project are fantastic. Coupled with over 100hrs of gameplay.

Honestly, it’s kind of bizarre how rough native Switch players had it with this game for years. Aside from the original Wii U release, Xenoblade has pretty much been a series that felt better on emulators than on the actual hardware, mainly because of the blurry image quality and unstable frame rates.

It’s good to finally see an official version of the game that doesn’t look terrible and apparently is stable.

ABizzel179d ago

This is exactly why hardware matters to a decent extent.

It effectively took a 900p@30fps, maxed it to 1080p, then used DLSS to upscale it 4x in resolution to render at 4K, while also doubling frame rate.

I am waiting for a physical copy.

I don't see this happening. Nintendo has said the "Only place to play a Nintendo game, will be on a Nintendo console!". Yes I know people are using emulators, but that isn't what Nintendo intended.

MAYBE, if Nintendo does decide to port X over, it's because it is an Xenoblade game that is stand alone.

X, is my favorite Xenoblade game in the Series, because of Skells" flying your Skell and battling with them feels great!
