PlanetSide 2 PS4 Closed Beta Impressions

To be quite honest, PlanetSide 2's ‪#‎PS4‬ Beta has its fair share of gameplay issues; But that's what Beta's are for. Below the surface, one can still see flashes of what can easily be one of the console's definitve First Person MMO Experiences.

I am enjoying it but sometimes I have no idea where I am meant to be going.

"‎PS4‬ Beta has its fair share of gameplay issues" lolz....so does the PC version. Its why I stopped playing. I tried it out when it first released, then a year or so later I tried it out again after some updates.....still has many, many issues.

Its just not as streamlined as the BF series, after playing it, I realized just how good the BF series actually is lol.

Some times you just small thing for granted lol. I worry for the final version as this team has been working on this version legit since mid 2013, mind you....it was suppose to come out shortly after PS4 launched.....shortly lol. This team just has sooooo many issues, I'm no longer sure its just based on the complexity of the game, how is it other MPs can get their game up and running yet we are here close to 2 years since this port was even announced. At this rate....they could have made another game lol.

I'll try out the PS4 version when it releases, but I'll likely keep BF4 as my main BF until Star Wars BF3 or BF5.

psychobabble4050d ago

I kind of agree with you, but man... you've got to lay off the "lols".

SoapShoes4050d ago

Well a big difference between this and other multiplayer shooters is this has 2000 players not 64 at the max.

_-EDMIX-_4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

Oh bud...I was laughing out loud sooooooo much typing that.

The development of this game is fully of the lolz.

lolz at the disagrees! They want da lolz! Its clear those 2 don't agree!

brich2334050d ago

That is why i never played it on pc.

As a former PC Planetside player I know the immediate issue with this beta seems to be a lack of organized groups, I know that random squads/ platoons can be formed, but they lack experience with the game and in coordinating in large groups so the experience suffers. It's something you have to break in for it to get "fun". A platoon leader should know the map by heart, and the rest of the squads should be able to follow orders exactly, with only some rudimentary knowledge of the map.

The game needs to be played as a hierarchy system, where every member of a platoon follows squad ->platoon leaders orders in order for it to work, with platoon leader having the final say on anything the entire group does. Which is difficult when every player is accustomed to shooters that let them be independent and run off solo.

Ex: On PC information people received was filtered through assigned groups in teamspeak where platoon members would only joined a module named after their in-game squad in the TS3 server to talk, this filtering of information is so that the platoon leader and other members can focus and only hear what they need to hear without getting spammed by other people talking. Even within a squad the only people who are allowed to speak are the squad leaders or platoon leader who has audio priority so all the squads can hear him at the same time.

However in this beta, it seems even if one group is organized and knows what they are doing it still wont make a difference because the opposition still needs to be equally competent/organized in order for their to be a competitive engagement.

This is a group is used to play with that was causal but more organized then some of the more strict clans in the game Ex: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

RealFry4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

Just wanted to add/summarize.

Planetside just requires more hands-on teamwork then other games because of the amount of people your coordinating with. It's not always an anally strict game( my clan used to goof around a lot) just needs to be played a little differently. It's a different experience.

Besides that the only other con I noticed may have only been pertinent to me, but when I played, the game ran a bit outside the borders of my TV and there was no setting I could find to adjust it to my screen dimensions.

While the concept of platoons and squad coordination on PC seems very engaging, yes, random squads formed on PS4 seem mostly just as confused as other individuals.

Moreover, they often get stuck in a loop. Say attempting to capture a particular point by method A ends in getting them killed. Very often, it is noticed they will keep trying Method A to meet their ends. And this is just a small example of the extent to which the grinding can go to. In the end, you're just tired of it. Also, even in squads, there's no use of mics whatsoever.

Maybe the emergence of more organized clans after the final build is out may help better experiences. But for now, running around in circles with the others seems like the only plausible option.

* If there is an ALERT, then go there, that will be a potentially HUGE battle.

* If not, then find a group and fight with them to over take outposts and bases.

There is a lot of freedom really as the battle is constantly ongoing.

ThrowingDigitalSheep4049d ago

Agreed, The freedom is one of the few appealing points of the game.

UKmilitia4049d ago

well we should make a clan called WTFdowedo.
Im completely lost in it and have gone back to other games.

I wanted it badly but just lost what to do.
the framerate and graphics are crap, the controls dont transition well.
fingers crosssed its sorted and there is a tutorial added.

ThrowingDigitalSheep4049d ago

Wanted it just as bad as well. But if it is as the PC players have been claiming, the chances of major fixes being made seem bleak.

wakeNbake4050d ago

meh its like battlefield but 10x slower, not bad for f2p I guess though.

Rimeskeem4050d ago

10x slower with 10x the amount of players per map

RJ920094050d ago

I want to play this bad was a big fan of the first one on pc and it's one of the few pc games I enjoyed

camel_toad4050d ago

I was a huge fan of the original too and had high expectations for the sequel but after playing the beta on pc and later the full release - giant letdown. Made me sad it was so "un-fun".

RJ920094050d ago

How does its movement feel like bf4? Or like mag?

camel_toad4049d ago

@RJ92009

I would definitely say closer to MAG than battlefield, then again I didnt like the way MAG felt either, control-wise =/

DragoonsScaleLegends4050d ago (Edited 4050d ago )

My experience: Crappy 30fps, 99% of the time walking alone, Slow paced, Takes forever to respawn and get back in the action once killed, No knowledge given on where to actually go. I'm guessing if anyone tries to play this game while being completely new to the game, without using a mic, and without friends you will have my experience. Of course 30fps is bad for fps games, it's the reason why I just couldn't enjoy Destiny at all, not even a little bit. I tried the game on PC around a year ago and just thought the mouse and keyboard controls where bad but after playing this version I think the game itself is just bad.

UKmilitia4049d ago

destiny at 30fps was fine imo.

Halo2ODST24049d ago

Execpt it's lack of content...

They sold the entire company. I did like when they ran Everquest as well. But numbers were declining unfortunately

Was such a cool concept back in the day - shame that it never really took off like it probably could have with more support
