Mass Effect: Ready for a Transgender Protagonist

As BioWare’s fourth installment lies on the horizon, the team’s writers seems more than capable of creating a strong transgender player character for the series.

This will cause a lot of controversy if BioWare ever decided to create a trans protagonist , just wait for the countless of articles about this.

Anthotis4058d ago (Edited 4058d ago )

I don't see how the series will improve by introducing a character that suffers from gender identity disorder, as well as potentially having a desire to commit genital self mutilation and overdose on hormones.

It would be better if developers took a stand against the SJWs, rather than allowing their bizarre and mentally disturbed ideas to pollute an excellent franchise in Mass Effect.

I hope that even devout fans of Mass Effect have enough integrity to boycott the game and company if they go through with this.

nosferatuzodd4057d ago

Im with you on this one I dont see any improvement an anything by doing
This

HammadTheBeast4057d ago

Yeah here's my problem with the whole thing. The whole SJW community doesn't want equal representation or new games being made with their own distinct characters. They want existing games to be changed to fit their certain appeals. Do we need a gay Batman or a bisexual Mario? No. And as far as the devs decisions go, that's their creative choice. If devs want to make a character that is gay/bi/lesbian etc, all the power to them, if it's what the game works with, go for it.

But would Mass Effect REALLY become a better game with a transgender protagonist? Would the majority audience (which I'm assuming the devs are aiming for) connect with the character more and appreciate it? No of course not, and is that a bad thing? No, that's just what the devs want to do with their game.

Christopher4057d ago

I don't see how it would improve by not having one.

You say they should take a stand against SJWs, but perhaps what you should realize is that BioWare has a long history of including a wide variety of gender types and sexual orientation types. Regardless of what you think SJWs do or don't, BioWare has been doing it for longer and do it because they want to do it.

So, attack SJWs all you want, you're doing it out of ignorance. This is usual for BioWare. All you're truly attacking is their creative right to include what they want in a game.

This has nothing to do with SJWs.

AndrewLB4057d ago

For only being around 1% of the population, the Velvet Mafia sure has managed to amass a lot of political power under the current regime. I'm getting a little sick and tired of them, as are most people I know including my gay friends. They've now gone from "i just want to be equal" to "you'd better be in favor for every single sick, depraved, and unnatural act I can think of or else we'll destroy your business, ruin you with frivilous lawsuits, then take your son for a weekend camping with the boy scouts".

Mithan4057d ago

Agreed. It adds nothing.

I want a good game and great story, not some "checklist" that has to be filled in order to not offend people or something stupid like that.

Seriously, I don't care about transgender people, or homosexual, hetro or whatever. I don't need it in my game, and if it is in my game, you don't have to "focus" on it.

himdeel4057d ago (Edited 4057d ago )

Why is a transgender protagonists necessary? I already played my woman Sheppard avoided relationships with everyone and saved the universe.

Now being anatomically confused is the next order of business?! Why? These agenda have no place in my games.

This is why I don't care if games add more giggle physics to boobs or listen to those white knight socially correct yahoos. Bring on the titties and plain old good games!

Edgy "Debate" article.

Emphasis on 'bait'.

3-4-54058d ago

* To appease the .004% of the fan base that are transgender your going to force the 99+% of people to play as a transgender ?

* Why not just give the option.

Sex - Choose Male, Female, other/Transgender

But then also create the look how you want.

So if people wanted to create a man that looked like a women they could....or if they wanted to create a women that looked like a man they could.

* There are only so many options for which sex you are, and shouldn't be difficult to include but FORCING that upon people is going to kill sales.

Sure the MSM will love it...for a week...before they start bashing it.

004058d ago

On that note I remember saint row 2 letting one create a male that has a female voice and vice versa and those people still managed to bitch about it.

DallasTrout4058d ago

People would complain even if it was an option. Just like the gay romance options in Dragon Age Inquisition, completely optional but people complained like it was forced upon them.

Ultraplayerxp4058d ago

That makes sense. Too bad it makes TOO much sense.

rainslacker4057d ago

How is it forcing is they give the option?

Serious question.

Don't get me wrong, I feel this is not really needed, but don't really care if it's an option, or even care if it was the only option outside of I like my femShep, but that won't matter much for this game.

I do think it will cause a lot of needless controversy. Gamers will be called homophobic by the media, and it'll just be more ammo for the SJW for a game that usually offered these options before these things were even big talking points.

JsonHenry4058d ago

How about we just play a game without the romance crap thrown in regardless of sexual/gender orientation and let people play without that mess added in just so that Bioware can get a pat on the back from the gub'ment?

Never forget part of gamer-gate was the U.S. Government was pushing for game devs to make more homosexual/pansexual/transgend er/female heroes in games.

And they wonder why the Souls games do so well. Because it focuses on game and gameplay!

rainslacker4057d ago

Doubt they could remove the romance options at this point. Bioware games are just like that. If they did so people would raise holy hell more than giving the choice of a transgendered character.

Dee_914057d ago (Edited 4057d ago )

why stop at transgender? make a fat mexican bi transgendered depressed, oppressed, religious, atheist, mentally and physically disabled self proclaimed flying swamp monster. Hit on all the political sjw subjects with one character.Take the progressiveness to the next level bioware.. the state of our society depends on your vidya game... no pressure tho

PSVita4057d ago (Edited 4057d ago )

Can't wait to make my Down syndrome Shepard who's paralayed, deaf and suffers from PTSD😁

And I'm totally gonna preorder the game to get the Cancer/AID DLC pack which inculdes a gameplay time limit as soon as you start your game

Keep innovating Bioware!

crazychris41244058d ago

Dont really care its not going to stop me or push me into getting the game. Just want the next game to be fun to play with many meaningful choices in dialogue and gameplay. For example, do you save a noteworthy crew member or let them die in order to complete the mission? Also needs great story, interesting characters, beautiful environments and satisfying endings.

Last thing I'm going to worry about is if I can create a transgendered character, if it bothers you then dont create one.

jackanderson19854058d ago

I'd be fine with any dev doing whatever. But don't (and do correct me if I'm wrong) transgenders prefer to recognise themselves as their actual sex (be that male or female) rather than go "eh I'm neither sex I'm transgendered"

rainslacker4057d ago

It's hard to keep track of what's what, but according to Wikipedia, they know they're one sex, but think of themselves as a different sex. I guess they think they were born the wrong sex.

It can get pretty confusing if you don't keep up, and most people dont' care to really keep up because they just don't care what other people think of themselves.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

CaspuR4058d ago (Edited 4058d ago )

I really dont get why a transgender person has to be in the game? Like how does that effect anything? I have no probs with transgendered people im just saying there kinda pointless in games thats all.

rainslacker4057d ago

To be represented I guess. Unfortunately, Biowares representations of anything are rather cursory at best, and rarely matter other than to give the player the option to represent their own interests. There is no great philosophical or meaningful content that comes out of any of these choices, whether they're controversial or mundane.

Personally, I stopped bothering trying to have a romance with my main character play throughs because they weren't all that interesting and seemed more like a way to get some fan service than to have any sort of meaningful connection with the other characters.

Mass Effect 4's Dialogue Could Take a Page Out of Baldur's Gate 3's Book

Mass Effect 4 has the perfect chance to reintroduce dialogue skills, and Baldur's Gate 3 might be the blueprint BioWare needs.

I'm not so sure they can, most talent that made the old games as good as they were, has left Bioware.

RaidenBlack362d ago

They can always recruit old fellas,
And also, new devs can always learn and also new indie devs are very passionate evident from the amazing indie games heavy with these gameplay features.

Michiel1989362d ago

I don't think anyone would wanna come back after the stories that were told from Anthem development. I just don't see it happening. It's a bit similar to blizz, some of the talent has come back there, but there has been a shift in the studio's culture and also what the higher ups expect/demand of them

matt139362d ago

After andromeda and veilguard i think it’s assured that the bioware we once knew has gone, I have little hope for me4. Hopefully i’m wrong.

anast362d ago

The can't. But they wouldn't even if they could.

Yeah… also if pigs decided evolve wings, they could fly…

Next Mass Effect Will Maintain the Mature Tone of the Original Trilogy

Many fans of the Mass Effect series have been wondering whether the next installment will keep the tone we’re used to or will change like Dragon Age did.

pwnmaster3000564d ago

God I hope so.

Mass effect trilogy is my top 3 trilogy for me.
Remember playing it on the 360. Blew my mind.

just_looken564d ago

The fact you can alter/remove entire quest lines do too what you did on me1 in me3 or all those endings was one thing but then you remember that one team made mass effect 1-3 dragon age 1-3 in one console generation is just a insane feat that they did.

Great games but looking at mass effect 4 anthem current dragon age reviews/gameplay and who is left at bioware i have very little expectation on the new mass effect games.

Also last year that teaser trailer the look to me was not mass effect like why are we wearing a trench coat in space and at the same time trying to give off destiny vibe/look.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Just looked liked a starfield player made a n7 clothing mod yes it looks really good but to me a mass effect player just not a in the mass effect world vibe if you get me. Like the end part what is that player now trying to be in a western? so much going on that again to me not mass effect.

Like look at this 57 second teaser for mass effect 3 to me this sets the tone way better and shepard looks like he belongs in space no bike helmet/trench coat deal and the weapons/look feels mass effect

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

SO yeah i think the new mass effect is gong to be bad low expectations over here.

Heck one more 2005 teaser for mass effect one 20 year old footage give or take it was made in 2004 again shows the animations characters in light and looks like a sifi game

https://youtu.be/SkfB7-KwRn...

RaidenBlack564d ago

If you want to enjoy the same Mass Effect vibes, better keep an eye on the Exodus.
Being made by OG ex-Bioware devs at Archetype Entertainment, its a spiritual successor to ME-trilogy.

TheNamelessOne564d ago (Edited 564d ago )

Yeah. One of the bigger gripes DA series fans are having with Veilguard is that virtually no choices from the original game carried over to Veilguard and that there's very little choice/agency in the game, itself.

I'm not trying to be a pessimist. I loved Bioware, going all the way back to Baldur's Gate, but there's nothing in front of me right now that has me actually believing in what a new Mass Effect might be. I'm expecting basically a linear shooter with some romance options.

VenomUK564d ago

I speak on behalf of everyone on N4G when I say I hope that Bioware build on the DEI success of Dragon Age: Veilguard and allows every player character to have the option of becoming trans.

just_looken563d ago

@RaidenBlack

Great point yeah that so far looks be a good game fingers crossed.

IAMRealHooman564d ago

If the new DA doesn't sell well, we will probably never get it, what's to stop EA from axing Bioware after another failed to meet sales quota, they've killed teams for much less

just_looken563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

Well bioware as a whole last game that made cash was 2013 dragon age 3 so you never know they might get another pass again.

P_Bomb564d ago

Love that trilogy! Beat them on Xbox, PS3 and again on PS4 lol! One of my all timers.

Valkyrye564d ago

Now that Bioware is making bangers again hope has returned.

Obscure_Observer564d ago

Indeed.

And their next game will also focus on photorealism so it´s gonna be a banger of a masterpiece!

MrDead564d ago

DA:V is getting fantastic reviews so there's hope for the future. The last mass effect was such a disappointment story wise, let's hope they can learn from the new Dragon Age.

Kaze88564d ago

DA used to be very dark and bleak, now it's just jolly good time with guardians of the galaxy. Choices don't matter, you cant actually be evil or mean, you cant lose anyone. There is not much hope for a good Mass Effect.

Abriael564d ago (Edited 564d ago )

Let's hope not. The new Dragon Age: The Veilguard is exactly the reason for this comment, because it threw away the mature tone of the original.

RaidenBlack563d ago

Agree ... the moment I read the comment the ME main menu theme came to my mind.
Dont effing downgrade ME.
I am looking forward to Exodus for my ME fix in the meantime anyways.

Mass Effect 4 and The Challenges of Canonicity in Choice-Based Games

Game Rant Writes "Canonicity can be a tricky nut to crack in franchises with continuing narratives, and that's something Mass Effect 4 will need to contend with."

gamerant.com
just_looken1126d ago (Edited 1126d ago )

wow gamerant forgot mass effect 4 came out years ago number 6 and 7 were cancelled.

The new mass effect which can be called number 5 will not have any of your choices why you might ask?

Well dragon age keep were your choices from number one can been seen in number 3 got unplugged from number one and number 2 is finicky.

Dragon age on pc requires a mod to get past the server login and non of your choices get uploaded to the keep even the dlc no longer works sense it needs a server check.

On xbox i teseted this only though local saves i was able to transfer choices from one to too but 0 of one dlc would work.

So if the more popular dragon age series is in this state why would they care about your mass effect choices?

Oh and that remaster that was tossed out still has day one issues and number 3 is still hard to play on pc do to lighting issues and ram limits imposed from 2014.

My expectations for the next bioware 2.0 titles is very low.

phoenixwing1125d ago

They should redo the main trilogy

just_looken1125d ago (Edited 1125d ago )

They should redo the dragon age trilogy for sure on pc DA1 the ui is messed up sense it was for 4080p/720i days back in 2005. Getting to run is also very hard

The only way to play dragon age one is via xbox one backwards compatable state.

The ps3 version of dragon age one is pre throphy/ in game xmb so it has the freezing/crashing issues or just will not run.

just_looken1125d ago

Well i am not American so please enlighten me on usa education before your country invades mine and forces us into your society

GhostScholar1125d ago (Edited 1125d ago )

@ just_looken

Did I mention education? Never said America did have negative points. I know for all you “enlightened” people you think everything is either all good or all bad, but in reality that’s not how life works. We have a government that traded a known terrorist for a basketball player who moonlights as a drug dealer. We aren’t perfect by a long shot. If you want to go political though how about your leader leaving his own country when the truck driver strike happened?

porkChop1125d ago

Dragon Age is not more popular than Mass Effect.

shinoff21831125d ago

Yea I read that and was like I've heard way more people talk mass effect compared to dragon age. Personally I'm more into mass effect. It's got the whole dope ass sci fi thing going on while dragon age has the same old medieval thing

gold_drake1125d ago

andromeda is a spin off tjo and not considerd a numvered title. as it has to 99% nothing to do with the trilogy.

i think they need to make the destroy perfect ending canon.
we need more of shepard. haha.
