Project AM2R, the Metroid Fan Project that Briefly Was

Fan projects like Project AM2R are loving tributes to classic games. But, as we all know, Nintendo doesn’t like tributes. Or probably love. What is Project AM2R? It is the culmination of six-year year odyssey. Created by a fan of the series, it is a remastering of Metroid II: The Return of Samus. The original was released on the original Game Boy in 1991. Project AM2R was released for PC just in time for Metroid’s 30th anniversary.

Easy… Nintendo is essentially a toy company in their mentality and modus oper . Their hardcore fan base on the other hand have already outgrown toys.

LOL_WUT3573d ago

I'll say this again, the casuals are not loyal. Why does Nintendo keep doing this to themselves? I don't just mean people who play on mobile either I'm talking about those who want another gimmicky system ;)

UltimateMaster3573d ago

As long as Reggie is in charge. They'll continuously be out of touch with core gamers.
It has been the case since the mid-game-cube era.
Nintendo Japan and Europe has more of a grip on core gamers than America does.

Concertoine3573d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

@Ultimate

Reggie is no longer CEO, Iwata took over as CEO in 2013. Now he is an executive officer of NOA.

Plus i don't think his influence was ever big enough to screw things up like this. It's a company-wide issue when games like Federation Force and that Animal Crossing party game are being approved.

@AJ

Bad example - whereas presidential approval ratings speak for themselves, sales speak for Nintendo and they are not the best sales.

AJBACK2FRAG3573d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

The Republican party has tried to make the general public believe everyone dislikes President Barrak Obama but the truth is the exact opposite which is in my opinion very similar to this situation . All the haters and Sony fans try to make the general gaming public believe everyone dislikes Nintendo but the truth is the exact opposite.

Nintendo is a company for profit. The nintendo "hardcore" crowd isn't big enough to get the margins they want. The "hardcore" have shown they didn't care ever since they dropped the gamecube. It's just an on going cry about "loyalty" when there really was none.

The irony of all this is that the PS2 actually sold so many due to the casual players. Games like GTA go well beyond "hardcore" players. So pretending the "casual" market should be ignored is extremely naive.

So everyone's gonna ignore Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild all of a sudden? What about Nintendo acquiring the exclusive rights to Bayonetta 2? Devil's Third (even though it rated poorly, Nintendo took a chance on it)? You can blame them about the situation they put themselves into regarding their third party support, though the other two hardware console manufactures are also at fault when it comes to certain liberties (paying for online gaming, wtf?).

The type of software Nintendo develops/publish is for all ages (try completing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 100%). I'd like Nintendo to take the "industry standard approach" when they're delving games every now and then (story telling, fmvs, voiceovers), though they're good at their craft and have to departs who can fill those voids (Monolith Soft, Retro Studios).

Xenoblade Chronicles X is a game couldn't imagine on any platform (except PC), yet it's here, and on Nintendo's worst selling platform; the Wii U (I'm stating that they are creative and do take chances).

wonderfulmonkeyman3572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

News flash; all video game consoles are essentially toys.
And FYI, the majority of Nintendo's fanbase is between 18 and 30.
No one's "outgrown" anything because Nintendo's not something a real gamer would use to judge any form of maturity by.

BrandanT3573d ago

Because they do what they want with little regard to fans.

this. nintendo dont listen

Old leadership. Fresh faces are needed

_-EDMIX-_3573d ago

Desperately!!! this is a company that has made so many clear obvious mistakes that it's scary to think the management is just unbeknownst to the problems going on.

Sm00thNinja3572d ago

They are so obliviousy out of touch with the direction thr industry has gone it's embarrassing.

rjason123572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

Yeah like trying to nickel and dime their fans with unfinished games that require tons of patches.

@edmix- you totally missed what I was saying (I do admit I wasn't being super clear though lol) I was talking about games that come out and are barely playable or glitch/crash as soon as they come out lol.

_-EDMIX-_3572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

@rja- to be honest though Mario Kart in Smash Brothers got lots of patches that is a normal thing in the industry and I would say it made those games better post-launch in comparison to last generation where they had zero.

Do you not know there are several glitches in the last Mario Kart game on the Wii? Do you not know that Smash Brothers Brawl online is basically broken since it released because they've never patched it?

Software is Dynamic, it is not absolute.
When I was originally going to be a graphic design artist it's one of the first things I learned.

Talk to any software designer and they will tell you software technically speaking could never be actually finished or absolute in nature. By its design it is dynamic which means merely ever-changing.

So I do not believe Nintendo is nickel and diming their fans by patching their games on the contrary how could you blame Nintendo for fixing its problems this generation? Patching does not mean you have more problems it means you're fixing the ones that exist to not patch is to assume it's perfect and last generation I could not tell you any Wii game that was "perfect" they all had some sort of issue that actually would never get resolved because it was never patched.

Nintendo watching their games this generation in offering post-launch content is the greatest thing this company has done this generation I completely disagree with you.

What would your solution be? To never fix issues that will always arise? Unless you could name a perfect game with zero bugs you can't really assume that patching a game is something bad.

A good friend of mine holds several World Records in Nintendo games and I could assure you they are notorious for bugs and glitches....

It's better they get addressed then never fixed.

@sm00th- to be fair this generation they have been making some improvements but the sad part about it is patching games and having an online infrastructure to allow digital distribution for post-launch support should not be a brand new thing to this company for god sakes for Microsoft and Sony you're talking about something that is 10 plus years old to them.

Nintendo is slowly getting there but they might have lost lots of their install base that is likely never going to return because of the slow adoption rate they cannot afford to be the Blockbuster against Netflix in this situation. They've already likely permanently lost an extremely huge chunk of their install base. I can honestly say this company has potentially lost billions that they could have learned from downloadable content had they had offered post-launch content or even had an infrastructure that allowed for it Lost Generation I cannot tell you how many of my friends were very much willing to purchase post-launch content after they picked up a Nintendo game only to be left there with just the game itself it was an extremely huge missed Opportunity by Nintendo instead you had a generation with one game with the same content...

Fans did not get the opportunity to play their favorite games with more optional content.

developers did not get the opportunity to get paid for a little more work.

Nintendo did not earn more money.

I'm sorry , but it's completely stupid and it's one of the reasons why this company is completely out of touch and is losing its fan base rapidly.

miyamoto3572d ago

Nintendo is still afloat because of Yamauchi's extreme wealth and influence. Same thing with the Xbox brand because of Microsoft's and Gate's extreme wealth.
But how deep will those pockets go???
Sony on the other hand is in constant strive and challenge mode because it has compete for it's life.

masterfox3573d ago

lol not only hardcore fans, Nintendo is out of touch for the whole damn gaming industry and technology in general.

Nintendo doesn't know if they are going or coming, they are so clueless.

yeahright23573d ago

Honestly I think they're trying to do what McDonald's does. catch the kids wow and awe them at a young age, then when those kids grow up, they bring their kids to Nintendo and have the cycle repeat itself.

DragonPaw3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

I agree. It seems that they decided to be toy makers and take the overprotected child audience. It is an insult to their original fans for them to be selling overpriced hardware. Maybe they don't like the idea of older gamers. Either way, they are backing further and further away from even being in the same category as PS or Xbox.

Hearing even a teenager say, "Try beating Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze," makes me cringe with pity. I could imagine that as a drink that came with a happy meal. I used to love nintendo. I thought Mario was way better than Sonic, and I never considered buying Street Fighter for my Sega. Now, Mario isn't enough to pull an audience larger than a wagon of children.
