Is The Witcher 3 Overhyped?

VGamerz writes: The Witcher is a fantastic series of games, based off of what I can only assume is a fantastic set of books. With Wild Hunt on the horizon, people far and wide are getting massively excited, and tickets for the metaphorical train made of hype have all but sold out. As gamers, we know better than to fall into this trap. People start slapping impossible expectations onto projects, and on release everyone gets burned. But is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt really going to be the second coming? Does it deserve the hype it is getting?

oIITSBIIo4059d ago (Edited 4059d ago )

Yes.
It's my #1 anticipated game, but this overhype is wrong and can hurt the game.
Note side the plot is not meh, it's excellent.

bixxel4059d ago

Wrong. It isn't nearly overhyped.

joab7774059d ago

It's sefinitely not overhyped. Go and ask a bunch of non n4g gamers about the Witcher 3. Many havnt even heard of it yet.

Volkama4059d ago

Most hype trains are fuelled by marketing dollars. Fabricated enthusiasm bought by clever manipulative publishers.

Witcher 3 has a more genuine hype based on the substance of the previous 2 games. It'll probably smash it.

bixxel4059d ago

I meant it's NOT OVERHYPED AT ALL.

starchild4059d ago (Edited 4059d ago )

It's getting some decent excitement built up around it thanks to all the positive previews, but I wouldn't say the hype is super high or anything like that. It doesn't even seem to be on some people's radar.

I'm not sure how we can even measure accurately something as nebulous as "hype level", and even if we could, how would we be able to know whether the game met the hype until we've played it? And even after we've played it we're all going to have our own opinions about how good it is and whether it matches the perceived hype, so this whole question is pretty pointless.

In the end we all need to be responsible enough to not hype ourselves up to unreasonable levels. Some people tend to overhype in their own minds any game that looks promising. Then, when the game fails to live up to their unrealistic expectations, they start hating on the game.

That said, I'm very excited about The Witcher 3, and that is based on my experience playing the first two games and what I am seeing and reading about TW3.

Ezz20134059d ago

TBH IMO i didn't like Witcher 1/2
the combat just felt very outdated
and the facial animation was just...pain to look at
in fact the entire game animation is very outdated

But Witcher 3 seems to correct all that from what i have seen
So i can't wait for it

I would never call any game Overhyped or Overrated just because i don't like it though

Yes but not as much as Batman AK Id say ;)

Bigpappy4059d ago

How could someone answer this question without playing the game. Some things can't be over hyped. You can only answer this question AFTER playing the game.

Meltic4059d ago

for me its not over hyped. I remember Before witcher 2 was released i was allso OVER hyped but when it was released i was happy :). So i trust them. So far the game and Everything looks good.

Its always somthing isnt it? Overhype this overhype that. For some ppl it is some isnt. Dont make a big deal of it

bixxel4059d ago

Right you are. I mean, who first made the word "Overhype"? This is redundant.

Khajiit864059d ago

People need to stop worrying about what everyone else is hyped for. I have HUGE expectations for TW3 because I played the other 2 and those were great.

I am hyped for it, I expect it to be top 3 GOTY contender alongside MGSV and Arkham Knight.

OB1Biker4059d ago

Yea seems to me most games are kind of overhyped and it makes sense

Jedislayer4059d ago

absolutely not. Mortal Kombat is more over-hyped than this.

Khajiit864059d ago

I agree. MKX will be f'n AMAZING!

But I know way more people that do not have TW3 on their radar but cant wait for MKX.

methegreatone4059d ago

TW3 is my most anticipated game of all time.

There is no game right now that's as hyped as TW3. Atleast right now. Even the Arkham Knight doesn't come close currently.

Is it overhype ? Hopefully not. Hopefully CDPR have been sensible about what they release to the press , and the game will surprise us at launch. Knowing CDPR, this will probably be the case :)

Khajiit864059d ago

I built my first rig to prepare to push TW3 to the max. I cant wait.

loganbdh4059d ago

YUUUUUUUPP JUST LIKE ANY ANTICIPATED RELEASE ON NEW GEN

VJGenova4059d ago

Right? Because Boodborne is terrible. Right?

SMH

loganbdh4059d ago

Given the exception, and from what I hear and saw bloodborne looks like a good and sound game, just not my cup of tea.

fanboysmackdown4059d ago

What's a mess is this article. You go on to say how messy and buggy 1 & 2 were yet you tell us how much you loved them, get your story straight. I liked W2 and 3 looks real good. Overhyped my ass.

The actor who portrayed Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher series of games has died

Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor probably best known for starring in British comedy drama Monarch of the Glen - but known to me for being the hilariously foul-mouthed dwarf Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 - has died aged 81.

Cause they play NBA2k26, COD and gamepass

Fishy Fingers54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

3x less sales than Playstation.
3x less consoles sold than Playstation.

Per captita, it averages out that the same number of users are buying CDP games regardless of platform, no?

Bathyj53d ago

The exact same or possibly more because a series S, initial investment and effort to Port to Xbox consoles for a third of the return.

Simply not worth it

LMGk53d ago

“ Simply not worth it”

And yet, basically every game comes to Xbox.

NotoriousWhiz53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

A third is a pretty big number to be honest. Like would you rather make 15 million or 20 million? That's the difference that a third makes.

GamingSinceForever54d ago

Hey it’s ok. They are really impressed with XBOx’s new CEO so exclusivity is on the way. 😂

Loktai54d ago

Ok but I mean be logical ... modern PC, Switch, PS4 PS5 then you have XBOX, of all of those XBOX is probably only 10 percent... I mean, what do you expect? 10 percent increase in sales is still nothing to sneeze at, remember - this is CD projekt red and they sell a lot of software. 10 percent of their sales is probably what most studios DREAM of selling .... just playing devils advocate..... its easy to say LOL haha XBOX.... but.. I mean we know what it is at this point. I havent bought on since my xbox one X and before that I only used other peoples xboxes since the OG XBOX and stick with PC and Playstation and switch OLED, but .. I mean.... theres nothing WRONG with an xbox considering its just not the best - but they work fine. make no mistake.

The Witcher 4, 5, and 6 Will Be Released Over a 6-Year Period

CD Projekt RED confirms The Witcher 4, 5, and 6 will be released over a 6-year period, promising shorter development cycles ahead.

thesoftware730164d ago

Unless these games are bite-sized, it's a disaster waiting to happen or a major over-promise. Based on the tech demo they showed off, to get anything near that fidelity, and assuming the world is larger, no way they're cranking out 3 games in 6 years, unless they have some super AI doing a ton of work.

VenomUK164d ago (Edited 164d ago )

This sounds like a good move to me; CD PROJEKT Red make the game engine once and craft the world and the full story, then for each of the next two chapters they spend two years on making the adventure. I wish Bethesda had done this with Skyrim so we had new adventures.

Remember, GTA III was released in 2001 with its sequel GTA: Vice City just one year later in 2002. And GTA: San Andreas in 2004. Same engine but tweaked for all the games and they are all time classics.

thesoftware730163d ago

Venom, I get that, but the world of game development has changed dramatically since GTA3 and SA...these games will be extremely similar to each other, short, or downgraded quality.

But maybe CD PROJEKT Red has the secret sauce...we will see.

Michiel1989163d ago

mods literally solve all of that, thats why skyrim sold so well for god knows how many years. You can choose to add content, change the combat up completely, get a bunch of new spells, visually change whatever parts of the world you like you name it. Especially some of the overhauls I really enjoyed

thorstein163d ago

All this company does is lie.

I think their CEO might be a compulsive liar. The last interview I read of him he claimed they popularized/ created "Dark Fantasy" ignoring all super popular "Dark Fantasy" games already out.

LucasRuinedChildhood163d ago (Edited 163d ago )

Depends. Technically, they could spend many years on The Witcher 4, upgrading everything and polishing a new gameplay system with the story all planned out with the tools to create new content all set up.

Then release The Witcher 5 three years later. Then release Witcher 6 three years later. They would be iterative sequels.

It would be a 6 year release schedule from the perspective of a player but could be 11+ years of development. Unreal Engine 5 does also make games easier to make even if it has issues.

But even if 6 years is possible, they're probably just saying nice stuff for investors. The Witcher 3 sold for so long that sequels releasing close to each other might need even make them more money.

Tapani163d ago

They could also finish The Witcher 4, and dedicate a polish/finalizing team for the last 12 months to it, while gaining an extra year towards the 5th game, and do the same for the 6th.

Michiel1989163d ago

well they've probably set this up for a bunch of years. I would be surprised if by the time 4 releases they wouldn't already be mostly done with 5 and done a bunch of the legwork for 6 if they manage to pull this of. I'm extremely skeptical and also think they can't even be close to as large and content rich as w3.

OMGitzThatGuy164d ago

They’re just yappin to appease investors when they will be delayed a minimum of a year and half easily or will be alot smaller and reusing assets.

Rebel_Scum164d ago

Reusing assets is hardly a thing to complain about.

OMGitzThatGuy163d ago

If 3 games in a 6 year period feels the same then it would be a problem.

Profchaos163d ago

There's only one studio that really gets away with this and that's RGG but it's because their stories are so good their fans don't mind exploring the Same places over and over

Can cdpr do that I doubt it

jznrpg164d ago (Edited 164d ago )

It’s easy to say that but something is going to give unless they build up their studio to several massive teams and even then delays are likely. Either that or quality/size will be lesser.

Name Last Name164d ago

I assume this means they will build the world once and then just add story and minimal changes in the next two games.

ZycoFox164d ago

They might have a tool to help shape landscapes and areas faster, or with AI help included.

Shorter development time doesn't always mean less changes.

Games during the 64 days were made in 2-3 years tops, and look at Mario Kart World.. that was made in 8 years and while it has a decent track selection the open mode is basically a giant desert lacking content..

Long development time doesn't always mean lots of content.

franwex164d ago (Edited 164d ago )

Will in be like a Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? Not necessarily a bad thing if done right.
