Square Enix's Betrayal?

Remember, there was a time when Square Enix seemed to be exclusively in Nintendo's stable, not Sony's. As we started to witness near the end of the last technology cycle and throughout the current one, the age of the exclusive release is nearly over. Short of first-party developers, no one can justify limiting their sales by releasing a hot property on a single platform.

The days are gone when Ken Kutaragi could rely on Rockstar and Square to provide a stable of worthy competitors for the title of "must-have videogame." We're nearing an era where the purchase of a particular hardware platform is dictated by its features rather than its software. From the perspective of the average consumer, that's a pretty nice place to be.

it is not betrayl,u can not blame any body apart from sony(i know i will get dissagres from sony fan bois) but its sony arogance that is taking place! ms is not afraid to go to multiplat dev that are making exlusive for the ps3 and paying them money to bring it to their console, if sony said wait we want to pay u to keep it exlusive they would have done that but since we all know sony is aroganant and does not really belive in paying for exlusive they lost another exlusive,dmc4,gta4,re5 all thoes games will have stayed on the ps3 if sony paid for them but they did not.y no body knows!...sony really need to wake up and see that this gen is not like the last gen, money talks and ms is ready to throw money at dev to get as many multiplat or exlusive games that are ment to be for the ps3,...thoes of u who tought that the 360 will end up like the last x box i can bet ur haveing second tought now, sure sony still has loads of exlusive coming out this year and next but as time goes on ms will continue to dish out massive pay checks and keep going head to head for games...this gen is different its not going to be like the ps1 and ps2, rember every winner must lose at some stage -_-

Now the series will be held back due to limitations of the Xbox hardware. When a game is exclusive to one platform the developers can focus %100 percent of there efforts on squeegeeing out every last bit of technology on that platform. PS3 exclusive wold of made this that much better, and the Xbox is no push over in terms of graphics but the PS3 has way more potential of delivering perfection (wait until you see Killzone 2 today and you will understand). Now instead of exclusive this generation will see a lot more of time exclusive, and all games with this title compromisers the games full potential.

iNcRiMiNaTi6530d ago (Edited 6530d ago )

if they really did pay then ff13 360 would be released in japan AND they wouldve announced ff versus13 for 360. i think this is more SE trying to make more money in US/EU knowing that there are alot of 360 onwers in those regions who would get the game. and seeing all the other SE games being timed exclusives for 360 i dont think im too far off

gerol6530d ago

when i knew about the FFXIII xbox game...

i really feel down... I also want to burn all my ff games just 4 this.. hahaha

anyway, i was really dissapointed at square right now... wah... they really broke my heart. :'(

vasilisk6530d ago (Edited 6530d ago )

They definitely paid a lot of money...
It's not released in Japan because they haven't even started development for the x360 and it would take forever to release it. It also isn't worth the effort, time and extra money from MS to get this released to Japan

AuburnTiger6530d ago

Not paying for exclusives isn’t being arrogant, it’s keeping your dignity.

Kaneda6530d ago (Edited 6530d ago )

M$ is not afraid? GoW should be multiplatform. All Epic games are multiplatform! except for GoW.. wonder why? I think they are very afraid! They have been approaching SE for almost 5 or 6 years for FF! starting last gen consoles war.

Since the development of this gen is more costly. Sony probably can't afford to pay exclusive anymore. But M$ has a lot more money. So they can easily persuaded developers with cash.

Multiplatform games will be bad for Sony.. It will not look as good as their first party games. Which I think their 1st party games are crucial for Sony! All their games are delayed becoz they want to be perfect. They screwed up KZ-1 last gen, didn't matter to them. They have a lot exclusive from 3rd parties.. they want KZ2 to be perfect so a lot of delays... 1st party games screw up.. it will be bad for Sony.

Veryangryxbot6530d ago (Edited 6530d ago )

Sony's arrogance? How? When?
Dude, Sony didnt do shiat! How is that called being arrogant? Fanboys like you are so delusional they spin everything around into anti Sony.

If Square Enix wants their games to go multi platform, there is VERY little Sony can do to stop them, ok. Very little. Paying 200 million to keep a game exclusive is not called SMART business. Its called DUMB business.

Do you even know how much it costs to keep games like FF, RE or Gears of war exclusive? We are talking about hundreds of millions here! Not even MS PAYS that kind of money, ok. And yet, that is what these developers are asking.

So yes, you are blaming the wrong company here. Its MSs money and SEs greed that made yesterdays news possible. Yes, its SEs betrayal. This isnt about a videogame going onto the 360 because we couldnt care any less about that. This is about us, a group of gamers, sticking to a brand we know and trust and grew up with and the silent promise of certain game developers thats saying to their fanbase, which are also the same fans of that particular console brand: "you are OUR fans and you also support the PS brand, our game grew up on that brand and because you as fans made our company into what it is today, we will not disappoint you as a fan".

THAT is whats pissing people off around the world right now. They have been saying that its PS3 exclusive for over 2 years. Why the sudden turn about. We feel stabbed. We feel betrayed. And the fact that 360 fanboys dont waste anytime doing their fanboy dances in our faces, pisses us off even more! But quite frankly, we dont care about FF13 going to the 360 because WE KNOW 360 still cant match PS3 in anyway.

But we arent pissed off about that! We are pissed off because we got betrayed.

No big announcement from SE this afternoon means they have become EA of the east. And fk that! If there is no announcement soon, the hour of truth, than I will know hat the company I once supported has changed. Im not talking about SONY here, they have been innovating and making their promises true and then some. SE on the other hand...

highdro6530d ago

yh i know...that was to the ps3 fan bois that will probly see Square Enix move as a betrayal

mistertwoturbo6530d ago (Edited 6530d ago )

Yeah well the PS3 fanboys are the same loyal PS1, PS2 fanboys that bought every Final Fantasy game since FF7. They're the ones that fattened up Square Enix's wallet over the time. They're the ones that were flat out LIED to.

I know this aint gonna happen, but for example's sake. You're a hardcore Halo fan. and Halo is associated with xbox. You bought Halo 1 2 and 3. Then Halo 4 gets announced on the playstation 3. I'm pretty damn sure those Halo fans will feel betrayed.

They aren't going to feel "oh now everybody gets to play this great game." If anybody truely believes that, then you must not believe in exclusives. Exclusives are the true hardware sellers. Exclusives is what differentiate one console to another. Exclusives is what shows the true graphical potential of the hardware.

It doesn't hide that Square Enix LIED to the consumers. They Lied to Nintendo. And they just did it again and lied to Sony. And they're already stabbed microsoft in the ass by not release the game in Japan.

ry-guy6530d ago

You do know that before there was a PlayStation there was this thing called a Nintendo Entertainment System and after that was the SUPER Nintendo Entertainment System. And did you know that during that time Squaresoft was EXCLUSIVE to Nintendo? The only reason you were able to purchase pre-FFVII iterations for the PlayStation is because they were re-releases.

The only fanboys that have a right to be upset about this move are the original Squaresoft fanboys that aren't getting a FF released for their consoles. Forget hardware limitations and humour me for a moment.

Daver6530d ago

@3.1

I agree with mister...

@3.2

They didnt change of platform for the same reasons with nintendo and with microsoft and the circumstances are not the same

desolationstorm6530d ago

The circumstances were differnt but that doesnt matter they lied to their fans back then making the game for the n64 originally then swaping to PS. Yes it was more to do with hardware but for CGI purposes not graphics and gameplay. The game is still coming to the ps3 the fans that are getting annoyed get over yourselves. Your complaints make you seem Childish, take for instance Square putting DrangonQuest on the ds this generation. Square cares about money thats it.

As for the whole exclusive thing blame your systems for making game development so expensive that it is almsot crazy to release a game for just one system. Were just coming into a time where the only exclusives that should matter are from first party developers which is how it should be. You want them to push the limits and create awesome experiances well now you dont get to gloat on the game forums you just get to play the games you want to play.

I don't know about anyone else but I would rather Square go multi-platform and release titles for both PS3 and X360 and get the numbers they want. Instead of shifting focus to the Wii.

Kaneda6530d ago

Becoz my multiplatform games are horrible on PS3... there are a few exception, but still it will not take full advantage of PS3. When SE got licensing for Unreal Engine. I knew one day this is going to happen. :)

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972892d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus892d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim891d ago (Edited 891d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda891d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B890d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125891d ago (Edited 891d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic891d ago (Edited 891d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic891d ago (Edited 891d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981890d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot890d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda890d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot890d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy890d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay890d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12892d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay890d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183892d ago (Edited 892d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB891d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
