Thomcult: At the end of last week Sony made two big announcements that will undoubtedly have a big impact on the shape of the PlayStation brand for the rest of the year. These two announcements came in the shape of a declaration from Sony's Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda that the company has no plans to reduce the cost of the PS3. Secondly, SCE also announced a new in-game ad deal with Double Fusion to introduce "dynamic" advertisements to future PS3 titles.
The issue raised here is one of the differences between doing the right thing and then saying then right thing. While Sony may have its business plan for the next five years all laid out and these two announcements may only mark the movement of two pawns in the company's big game of financial chess. For all we know, keeping the current price and introducing more advertising could be two masterstrokes that will pay dividends in the future but the way that the news been communicated to consumers has been clumsy and dangerous.
