Sad to see. Driveclub clearly suffered from some terrible project management and the final game is still pretty bland imo, but you only need to look at it to realise there is some top talent at the studio. Not to mention their Motorstorm were pretty damn fun too.

I am not looking forwards to seeing Dualshockers "glorious 1080p screenshots" of their "amazing P45s".

"still pretty bland..."

LOL! What? Game is pure racing awesomeness.

i think this is like how people "lose jobs" in a production house once the movie is finished. i'm guessing. if it's not then it's always sad when people lose jobs.

the game is amazing btw.

Lamboomington4073d ago

Just opinion. The driving is undeniably intense, but some people don't really like simcade racing.

They prefer full on motorsport, or full arcade, and it has to do with a lot more than just the driving itself.

What Evo have now is also a promising platform. Think of what their next game will be like. They've nailed down all the tech and all that, they can focus on even more content and depth and variety. For those who love Driveclub, it's looking pretty sweet.

Also, the postlaunch support for this game is something every dev should aspire to do. Look at how the general reception went, from back when it first released, to the major weather patch, to all these new additions.

Azmatik4073d ago

Driveclub is the best race game available right now hands down.... Im assuming your one of those kids who thinks GTA's driving is more "realistic" and better lol!

ballsohard20134073d ago

well if was some awesome... the consumers would have showed up at the registers to pay for their copy. Oh no customers? Ok no money and no reason to keep you around... the pink slips on your desk, please leave lol.

subtenko4073d ago

I hope they are still strong to do a Motorstorm game on PS4. I like that they got experience with DriveClub first :) Now image how crazy Motorstorm is gonna look! :D

Yi-Long4073d ago

That's sad news to hear. I feel they made the right decision postponing release, and when it finally did release, it still had too many problems...

... but the game has been out for a while now, and their 'post-launch support' has been absolutely fantastic, and the game looks and plays amazing.

Just very intense racing in well balanced classes through gorgeous environments on fun tracks. I've been very impressed with the game so far.

I refused to buy it at launch because of the DLC, but I picked up the PS+ 'upgrade' for 22,50 a few months ago, and once the Season Pass drops to about 10 euro, I'll pick that up as well.

Best racer I've played in years.

DOMination-4073d ago

We can praise the post launch support but fact is they needed to do that because the game was a mess. Seems like they have done well since then though i agree with thw first post.. very talented, just needed better management and direction

The game is good, but nowhere near as good as it should've been. Why the fuck are they charging me so much for 5-6 cars? Forza is doing it too, but at least I get a lot more cars straight outta the box with Forza.

And the track selection is getting old now. Canada, Scotland and Norway (minus the snow and the shade of greens) are so similar its annoying me so much.

And finally the intrusive traction control system that you cannot switch off.

Azmatik4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

Dude do you not realize there's 60+ cars in the game out of the box. -_- smh Stop giving people misinformation. 5-6 cars that's nonsense

TheFanboySlayer4073d ago

Yea...you can tell that the launch of the game really hurt the studio but I for one think the games is beautifully done! (8.5/10) for me.

Only downside is the absence of the Playstation Plus Edition for those that haven't purchased it. I understand their frustration of being promised something that should have been there at launch but instead now have to wait....that really is a bummer.

donthate4073d ago

Yeah, I got burned on the whole Playstation Plus Edition. Still waiting for it. Another failed promise by Sony!

aCasualGamer4073d ago

All because of a shitty launch.

The game itself is absolutely flawless now. It's the best driving game i've played.

Gamer19824073d ago

The sad thing is this is the new shift in the gaming industry. Development houses are hiring staff when they need them nowadays instead of keeping them on permanently. A lot of developers and publishers are laying off staff and then picking up staff when a new game comes around and its really sad to see. It's why Indies have come so far though so there is a shining light in all of this.

Really sad, cant say i'm all that surprised tho.

mad-dog4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

Too bad...
Driveclub is an amazing game. It's sad they had such a difficult way to where they are now. Right now the game is pretty much perfect. A great dedicated racer with an immense sense of speed, great sound, great modes, lots of tracks and cars.

I kinda hoped to see a Motorstorm this gen...

I hope all those people find a new great place to work.

MrSec844073d ago

Sony said that some of them would be made redundant, but most will likely go to other studios, in the UK.
Sounds like Sony are just going to bolster some of their other studios with those 55 staff and leave Evolution with 45 staff, to handle Driveclub for now, but this is by no means a permanent thing for Evolution.

In all likelihood they probably don't have another game fully planned out yet, so it doesn't make sense to keep all of those staff just sitting around, when other studios could do with the workforce.

Another thing to consider is that much of the leg work for modern games production is in the creation of game engines, Evolution has that now.
Media Molecule are capable of making 2 PS4 games with around 50 staff, so it would make sense to scale back the staffing requirements if ES were just making Motorstorm and Driveclub DLC for PS4. ;)

mad-dog4073d ago

Thanx for the reply.
Makes sense

cruzngta4073d ago (Edited 4073d ago )

Its not the end of the world for them. Sony specifically stated they are 'restructuring' the studio and have kept the best people as well. This will be a needed move as Sony is doing this in general to get themselves in a better financial position going forward. Hopefully they will eventually get us a new Motorstorm.

Everyone's Talking About DriveClub Again, PS4's Underappreciated Racer

In this day and age, it’s rare we experience a warm fuzzy feeling when we boot up X (formerly known as Twitter, of course).

But the past few days have been lovely: our feed is full of people talking about DriveClub again.

The discussion started when someone posted a clip of the game and its infamous rain effects. The caption reads: “Still can’t believe this is a 12 year old game.”

This was one I was hoping would have some kind of boost from the PS5. The devs locked that sucker so tight...

I play the PSVR one even though it doesn't look as good, because that one is 60fps.

fr0sty42d ago

To this day, there still hasn't been a game to pull off better rain effects.

Cacabunga42d ago

Evolution Studios.. another waste of talent

fr0sty42d ago

I interviewed them twice back in my gaming journalist days... Once at E3 2006 and again on a podcast about a year later. Really nice folks.

fr0sty41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

The guy we interviewed both times' name was Simon, I can't remember his last name, it was 20 years ago, but he was a really nice guy, and was very passionate about his job. It broke my heart when I saw Sony shuttered Evolution. I do hope they bring some of those folks back, but I remember another studio ended up hiring most of them back in those days, and they've been releasing new games since under that studio... Codemasters, maybe? I forgot which....

But the amount of talent that Sony has shut down over the years, it's disturbing. Psygnosis, Evolution, Zipper... just those three studios produced some of the most innovative games that PlayStation has ever seen... and those games need to be brought back.

Agent7541d ago

Driveclub VR was graphically tragic.

maximusprime_43d ago

If they were to release that game on the PlayStation 5, there would be absolutely no need for a remaster or a remake. The whole appeal of the original game was that it consistently exceeded people's expectations.

fr0sty42d ago

Higher rendering res and textures, higher framerate, maybe toss in some global illumination/ray tracing, but other than that, they could keep every polygon the same and it would still look absolutely incredible as a current gen title.

Reaper22_42d ago

That game has good graphics but bad AI, though.

Agent7541d ago

The AI was what I'd call aggressive, but superb to play.

Jin_Sakai43d ago

Sony should reassemble the team and make Driveclub 2. Driveclub was so ahead of its time it’s crazy.

lodossrage43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

This is what I hate about gamers sometimes

There is a segment of gaming communities that always want an old game to come back. But when the game(s) were in their prime, nobody supported them or not enough people supported them. Driveclub, Killzone, Resistance, etc all fit that profile.

I want Driveclub, Killzone, Resistence, and etc all back too. But I say that as someone that bought into, played, and own those games.

Too many people like to talk but not put up the money to support when it's needed. I even lump two of my own personal friends into that. I remember how one of them constantly said "I always wanted to play the Resistance games", yet never made an effort to buy any of them. No way that's an isolated event.

IanTH41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

There are certainly games that fit that description, but I'm not sure these are a good fit:

- Driveclub infamously launched in a truly terrible state. It had a central focus on online & social features, and those were broken for about 6+ months before people could reliably play it as intended. It was so bad that the PS Plus Edition was delayed, along with its companion app. It also released less than a year after the PS4 launch, so it had to deal with a smaller total of launch PS4 owners to sell to, and Driveclub's rough launch certainly did it no favors.
- Resistance got 3 main console entries, and one handheld title for the PSP and PS Vita. Killzone got 5 main console entries across 3 generations, and one handheld title for PSP and PS Vita. This was also the era of millions of shooters, especially of the First Person variety, & genre fatigue was getting heavier by the year. So I feel these did pretty good at 5 and 7 titles respectively, pointing to enough people showing up for at least a while.

I'm not saying people don't exist who fit that criteria for these games, but I also don't think they were the primary issue. I think after a solid break from the IPs, as well as a lessening of shooter oversaturation, these titles could find healthy audiences if they came out with new entries at this point.

Agent7541d ago

Killzone on the PS4 had the graphics, but the gameplay was tragic, I only rated Killzone 3, although the first game on the PS2 was decent. The Getaway was another game Sony canned, the sequel was so bad. Plenty of games need a sequel, the likes of Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Project Gotham, Wave Race and F-Zero have been retired. The racing genre these days, I'm sick of Turismo and Forza due to the same tracks and any other clones.

robtion42d ago

I think the original Motorstorm was the game that convinced me to buy a ps3. Way ahead of its time.

Storm2342d ago

I played the sh*t out of MotorStorm 1 and 2. Incredible games.

darthv7242d ago

Pacific Rift was the best of the bunch for me.

badz14941d ago

Pacific Rift for me is still the best off-road racer ever made

Agent7541d ago

Surprised Sony didn't release a collectio, but all they seem to do these days is release God of War and Uncharted collections. It kills me that I no longer have a PS3, so a collection would be awesome.

Classic PS4 Racer DriveClub Is Now a Decade Old

PushSquare:

DriveClub, the legendary PS4 racer from shuttered Runcorn studio Evolution, has such an interesting story.

Originally announced alongside the PS4, the game had been intended as a launch title – we even played it in a big London church Sony had rented to showcase the new system prior to its release.

Evolution was done dirty... DC is still the most stunning visual game of its generation. They certainly deserved better in the end.

VenomUK585d ago (Edited 585d ago )

DriveClub was pretty and I loved the experience of driving in the rain, it was immersive. I had some good races with people from an old forum, but at times I found it to be a bit boring. MotorStorm was such a fun game to play and I loved the controls - it would make sense to remaster that.

DarXyde585d ago

I'd give the visual showcase award of the last generation to The Order: 1886. That game was immaculate.

Uncharted 4 was also absolutely insane, and perhaps manages to use the PS4's power in extremely clever ways.

jznrpg585d ago

It didn’t get good reviews unfortunately

obidanshinobi585d ago

Cause the game was mediocre at best, and surpassed in pretty much every area by Forza Horizon 2.

IRetrouk585d ago

Apart from visuals, driving model, weather effects, only thing forza had was an open world...

Inverno585d ago (Edited 585d ago )

It's multiplayer component was the only thing struggling at launch but the game was still perfectly playable offline. Done dirty is an understatement because how many games after came out with broken online components that got a pass? Now games with an SP and MP get separate reviews for SP and MP smh! SONY shut them down as if Evo had been bleeding money instead of putting out great games. Their fate was undeserved and they were the targets of a media smear campaign due to that one trailer.

Knushwood Butt585d ago

Loved it.
Now here's a game that would benefit from a remaster.
4K, 60 FPS
I'd buy it.

ravens52585d ago

Might have to fire it up. Got it day 1, it was great to me.

outsider1624585d ago

See? Another reason why physical is important. Going all digital will have you miss out games like this.

Gabrielmpf585d ago

I loved tackling the leaderboards. It's a shame they couldn't even keep them.

Yi-Long585d ago

Brilliant game, I really miss it, and it deserved so much better than what Sony did to it.
Most important reason I liked it; It was FUN. That’s it. The actual gameplay, throwing a car around corners, the challenging AI opponents, the entertaining tracks which were peak-design, etc etc, it was above all just FUN to play.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv72856d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85856d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio856d ago (Edited 856d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack856d ago (Edited 856d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972856d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183855d ago (Edited 855d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim856d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Notellin42d ago

If Microsoft boosted several hundred 360/XB1 to 60 FPS without patching the games I'm sure the modder and therefore also Sony could do the same.

But PlayStation gamers aren't really worthy of receiving those kind of free updates according to Sony and the community. You guys enjoy paying for really easy things like a FPS boost and kneeling down to lick the boots.

Inverno856d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183855d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 42d ago
Chocoburger856d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai856d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC856d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.
