Upsilon Circuit is Coming

Often times we hear that no one brings anything new to the table anymore when it comes to video games, at least when speaking about the AAA titles we get yearly. Toaster has even used that weak argument before, much to his chagrin. For those whom attended this years’ Pax East event in Boston and had a chance to stop by Robot loves Kitty’s booth, you may have found yourself eating those words.

Permadeath: A Bold Direction In Gaming

COG writes - Permadeath. It sounds bad and IT IS, but it's also a very bold and very exciting direction in games. True challenges, true consequences... leave the hand holding to your babysitter.

Man, this idea takes 'morality choices' to a whole new level in gaming

generalwinter3817d ago

I'm torn about Permadeath. I like not being coddled, for sure, but losing hours of progress to one slip of the controller is too cruel sometimes!

freshslicepizza3816d ago

it would take the souls games to a whole new level. the game itself would have to be totally fair and not some cheap ass enemy or control issues. in the online arena it would never work, too many clowns online.

ThunderPulse3816d ago

DayZ does it really good too cause take one well placed bullet and you lose all your progress.

MzDino3817d ago

Really enjoyable read and great analyzations!

Love games with perma death vs the die and repeat like the Souls series. Perma death games like Xcom and hardcore Diablo 3 can be an absolute thrill ride to experience. Knowing that you are a mortal with only one life to give totally changes everything.

Roccetarius3817d ago

Hardcore mode is an aboslute thrill in offline games, but you're at the mercy of one error by the internet.

Games like Dead Space 2 didn't depend on a internet connection, so something like that is just fine.

Vhampir3817d ago

Once you know what you're doing in D3, the only thing that can kill you is battle.net connection.

Dark Souls 2 still has it's no death/no bonfire runs for the rings.

frostypants3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

Xcom isn't really "permadeath", since you have unlimited lives in the form of a constant supply of new recruits. Real permadeath is when YOUR character dies and it's game over, flat out. Your character is never at risk in Xcom...you are the unseen commander.

Maxor3816d ago

Permadeath means permadeath. It's not limited to your character or not. When your favorite squad members are murdered on an ironman mission it still hurts like hell. The fact that the game doesn't end is irrelevant.

Permadeath, Iron Man. One Save.

I can get behind some implementations of these features but not all.

For example, the idea of playing Mount and Blade on it's One Save mode is not fun to me.

But I look at Xcom's Iron Man mode as 'the way to play'.

scark923817d ago

It should be optional at least for certain games, games should follow Iron Man, make it a leaderboard for friends in which you can see how far you all got within the game via one save, one life.

Pay-to-Troll, Perma-Permadeath and more in Upsilon Circuit

MWEB GameZone writes: "Upsilon Circuit, developed by Robot Loves Kitty, will incorporate some of the most unique concepts we have ever seen in a game; with a Pay-to-Troll monetization model to 'Perma-Permadeath', the game is sure to grab the attention of the gaming industry."

Sillicur4083d ago

Indeed, I love the concepts though!!!

SonZeRo4083d ago

uhh no thanks, money making scheme.

Sillicur4083d ago

To troll players by dropping monsters on their heads, i would actually pay to do that! Especially since they will permanently die by my hands!

HoldenZA4083d ago

Wow.....I really hope this concept does well! It looks like it could be tons of fun

Sillicur4083d ago

Indeed, if it does well maybe we will see more games incorporate some of these features :)

HanCilliers4083d ago

Wow, love the concept. I bet there will be people that won't mind paying to experience something so unique. I would.

Sillicur4083d ago

I would definately pay to experience this as well. The only thing i dont really like is that the game will end in roughly a year's time

DesVader4083d ago

Might just be worthwhile to check out for the pure novelty of the game :|

Sillicur4083d ago

Indeed, their previous game "Legend of Dungeons" is pretty nice as well, just normal permadeath but its fun!
