There loyal fanbase bought there wiiu to abandon the wiiu now would put a huge mistrust between Nintendo and there Fan base which could kill Nitendo in the long run.

At its price the wiiu is a good choice for a 2nd console it has a good stable of exclusives I dont own one rite now but will get one.

Thinking hard to sell my ps4 after im done with Dark Souls eerr Bloodborne and get a wiiu and will have my 3rd party games covered with my Xbox One.

Nope, they should just suck it up and wait for PS5 and XboxTwo to release and try release something with equivalent specs..

In the meantime they can liaise with 3rd parties and find out what they need to do in order to get them back on board.

Failing that, they should make a new console and base it solely on VR/AR if they want to stand out from the crowd.

A new system in 2016 or 2017 will be marginally better than what the PS4 and Xbox 1 can do. It will have to start out fresh with 0 quantity on the market. To be better than the other systems, the it would likely have to be priced around $400-$500. Also consider the backlash from the current adopters who bought a system just to see it go out in 4 years.

In 2016/2017 the other two systems will likely have an install base of 50-70mil total. What generation do you think the lead platform wild be for 3rd party developers... generation 8 with 50-70mil install base or Nintendo's generation 8.5 with 0 install base?

They tried to do the half-generation system thing and in bit them on the ass. There's little doubt what the results are going to be.

The people who have a Wii U right now are typically Nintendo loyalist and people who still want to get a perceived family console for their children. The hipster crowd of this generation will likely feel Mario isn't cool.

Bringing out a new system mid generation isn't going to change Nintendo's fortune any right now. They need to just suck it up and find a way to really cut cost and offer a very cheaply priced Wii U. They need to do it fast before the other more powerful systems become on par in price. It will really hurt them then. A $175 Wii U without the GAMEPAD coupled with Nintendo's current games would fly off the freaking shelves.

Nah i say another console 2017. Another handheld 2018 they can squeeze out a lot of games with the New 3DS. Even if they have a new console NIntendo HAS got to play all their cards right. They have to OVERHAUL the online, get 3rd party support, make it strong, etc..Nintendo can be #1 in gaming if they just made all the right moves.

Pulling out some entirely new home console hardware sooner than a normal cycle would be a very suicidal move.

Everyone, EVERYONE, who is a core gamer knows that that’s exactly why Sega failed; pulling out of their consoles far too soon, and thus shattering any faith that potential buyers [not just loyal fans] would have in the products surviving long enough for them to get their money’s worth out of them.

The cycle is a necessary thing. Nintendo home consoles aren’t like I-Phones; you can’t just pull out mid-gen and expect everyone to buy it because it’s the newest thing, and that’s not a business model that Nintendo could sustain monetarily anyways, not to mention all of the damage it would do to their reputation.
Hell, it would only increase the calls for Nintendo to drop consoles altogether and just start developing for phones, if they start adhering to a hardware release schedule that’s as rapid as new phones have become.

People would forever call Nintendo an early quitter that cannot hold their consoles down for a full gen, then they would point to Sony and Microsoft always fully supporting their own consoles throughout their life-cycles, come hell or high water, and that would further complicate Nintendo's efforts to appeal to new gamers, let alone maintain its current fan base.

To put this even more simply; no one is going to trust Nintendo to be able to support new fans, if they show that they are perfectly willing and able to abandon their oldest ones by switching home console hardware on them mid-gen.

Abandoning their loyal fans would be a stupid move that would only do more harm to their publicity, and thus their long-term sales, than sticking it out.

And regardless of what you think, Nintendo CAN ride this generation out with the Wii U.
They’ve been doing so since the N64 era. It has never stopped Nintendo from surviving from gen to gen, and in case you had not noticed, the Wii U’s sales have been on a slow but steady up-tick lately.

Nintendo needs to develop a firm strategy and make sure they have software ready to go before releasing a new console. I am not sure if they will be ready by 2016

Nintendo release the Wii U, not nearly as successful as the Wii but with arguably the better library of games, certainly 'core' titles. You may be surprised, but I - like many others - don't want Nintendo to release just a carbon copy of what its 'rivals' are doing, not that they ever would. Nintendo have always followed their own path, clearly. The reason so many people still love them. Sony and Microsoft fan boys, keep telling yourself both PS4 and XB1 are a success because sales, cause lets face it, the actual GAMES are lacking big time.

Edit: just for the record, I own a PS4 - bought at launch, as I did a PS3, 2 and owned a PS1. I also owned a Xbox, 360, but do not own a XB1.

I see how the diehard Nintendo fans supported the release of the "New"3DS and I wish that they would show some of that support for the idea of a new home console. Would Nintendo releasing an improved model of the Wii U, comparable to the PS4/XBox One in power, really be that bad? New first party games could all be playable on the original Wii U so that early adopters wouldn't be being abandoned. The new power would mean that games could be developed for all the consoles, not just the PS4 and XBox One (Whether you like the third party ports on the Wii U or not, after 2015 it won't matter since this seems to be the last year of cross-gen games. Games made exclusively for the PS4/XBox One cannot be ported to the Wii U).

Whether or not Nintendo keeps the GamePad depends on if Nintendo decides to finally make games that fully utilize the GamePad and show why you want to play with it. Right now, that doesn't exist. It has gotten so bad that the main 3 Nintendo games released last year - DK:Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros - didn't use the GamePad in any meaningful way and the latter 2 were bundled with WiiMotes and GameCube controllers. Not a big endorsement of the innovation of your new controller when you bundle your games with previous generations' controllers. I personally like the GamePad and think that it feels very natural when playing games that use it like Lego City Undercover and Deus Ex. When playing Tropical Freeze with it though, it feels foolish holding this big dead thing in my hands. Zelda looks to have the best use of the GamePad so far in a first party game and that is what they needed when they launched the Wii U 3 years ago (from Zelda's launch date).

People keep saying that they don't want Nintendo to abandon hardware and just make games , yet they are completely unwilling to admit that the Wii U is a failure from a hardware perspective. If nobody is buying your hardware, it doesn't matter how many great games you make. Satisfying existing fans is commendable, but that doesn't help expand your client base. Hopefully Nintendo takes a proactive approach instead of just limping along for the remainder of the generation.

they said they will have news on the console next year which means reveal 2016 and release 2017...thats not too soon imo...i hate how people act like spending 200-400 bucks on a console every couple years is too much but will gladly go buy an iphone and/or tablet for the same price or more every two years...its dumb...ive never been against any company releasing new hardware and os updates frequently.

I personally think that 2016 (even 2017) is a tad bit too early and given the fact the console just has a code name and they are only going to share a bit more information next year seems to tell me that we will not see this until late 2017 or even 2018.

Nintendo will ride the ship with the Wii U until they feel ready to launch a new console, so for those who are complaining that they just bought one or use it as their gaming system of choice (like me) have nothing to worry about. They are not going to show the new console by this time tomorrow.

I don't really think it needs one anyway. It has some great games on the horizon. I've really enjoyed my time with the console to dat. Captain Toad is my second favorite game this generation.

And realistically, how much more powerful do you think it would be than PS4/XB1?? Not much would be my guess, if at all. And the in a couple years Sony and MS release their next consoles and voila, we have another article such as this. If I were them I'd wait until next gen to release a new console. Release around the same time as the other 2 and release with comparable specs, so that it can receive the multiplats as well.

And then Nintendo announces their next system. I'm wrong a lot, so it's nice to be validated. Of course, they may not release it until 2017, but at least I'd be right in them not waiting for a new console cycle.

2016 is still a possibility. Typically, it goes announcement @ E3, launch lineup next E3, then launch that November. But, with Nintendo relying more on directs and less on E3, I could see an announcement in January, and a launch in November. This would prevent them from sabotaging the Wii U's 2015 holiday.

Hey N4G community decided to finally join and start talking games with you guys. So I'm seeing a lot of people (both here and other sites) say that 2016 is too early for the NX to come out and I can't figure out why. Some say it will prove that Nintendo is going the way of Sega and fans will remember Sega pushing out all those consoles in the 90s hoping one would stick. Yet, very few are acknowledging that is precisely what Microsoft did to the OGXB with the 360 and that turned out to be the right call. Not to mention that is essentially what Nintendo did with the GBA when it released the DS; and the GBA was like an 80 million seller. Sure the DS was wrapped in "3rd pillar" guise whereby if it failed no big deal just Nintendo trying crazy stuff and if it was a success awesome, doesn't change the fact that GBA's days were numbered the second DS launched.

Now I certainly don't hate the Wii U. I've owned one since launch day, have about 15 boxed titles (over 20 by the end of this year) a slew of VC and eShop titles, and unlike my PS4 did not sell the system after a year to sponsor a new video card. I like the system a lot, but I do believe they need to move on and sooner rather than later. There is more for Nintendo to gain launching in 16 rather than 17-18. PS4 and XB1 likely last until 2020 so Nintendo could have a console as/more powerful than their competitors and begin to see third parties come back. Nintendo would also have an opportunity to correct their marketing problems by starting with a clean slate, NX is already a much better name than WiiU.

Now by this time next year Wii U will be lucky to have sold 15 million consoles. So any big games released in 16 on Wii U would be better served launching on the NX system. Miyamoto has hinted that the next 3D Mario title is in the works. I would love to see say Galaxy 3 and Prime 4 launch the NX system. I see more and more fans hoping Nintendo finally puts a Pokemon Rpg on Wii U, but wouldn't it serve the company to have said title hit in year one of the NX system? Nintendo would also have the opportunity to correct their online missteps on a new system.

Also, I don't believe launching a new system in 16 rather than 17 would be betraying fans that have bought a Wii U. At this point online about 10 million Wiiu's have been sold meaning that really only hardcore Nintendo fans have bought one and Nintendo has released enough software at this point to justify the purchase in my opinion. The NX system likely will include backwards compatibility and there are plenty of trade in deals Nintendo could do to help out there best supporters. Plus it's not like the last year or two of either the Gamecube, Wii, or N64 were any sort of banner years in regards to software.

Now I will admit that there are about a million and one ways Nintendo could screw up there next system, but if they get a few things right at the very least they could regain some respect. If they correct there marketing problems, have the right games at launch, flesh out there online and user profiles, bring the console at least to technological parity of their competitors, attract some 3rd party support, increase VC support, and tie the home console closer in with the handheld console, I believe a new system in 2016 could be very successful. If they don't do tose things it doesn't really matter what year they launch.
