Artificial Intelligence Must Improve for Gaming to Evolve

As great as improved visuals and huge open worlds are, gaming can't rely on those alone to push it onto greater success. For games to truly evolve as a medium, artificial intelligence is just as important. Sadly it's been something of a secondary project in most games, and this has to change.

I agree. I'd also love to see more dynamic gameplay. Imagine a multiplayer in which different enemies appeared at different times. Dark Souls, for example, except when you die, you don't get the same route back to your body.

Or day/night cycles, the ability to open or close pathways. Simple maps could be so much more of they were always changing or you could interact with them, force you to think on your feet. Imagine bosses or enemies that constantly changed the way they fight. Or if you chose to be a mage, enemies know this and build up their defenses against magic, forcing you to think outside the box.

We have reached a type of plateau with graphics. They look damn good. Now it's time to change up or evolve in other ways. It's always those games that leave a lasting impression...games that did it 1st...and it worked.

Good read. I wonder the same thing myself. To me, I really haven't seen a major improvement in game AI for nearly ten years, which is borderline pathetic. Too many game developers are putting far too much effort into making the game look pretty instead of making the AI smarter, and to compensate for the stupid AI, they just throw more enemies in the room or make them more resistant to damage *coughbungiecough*. That's not fun to me; that's just boring and irritating.

But noooooooo, gamers just want higher resolution and framerate. To hell with making a game fun or anything.

In 2001 Eugene Joseph (former Lockheed-Martin contractor) started working on translation software that accounts for phrasing, accents, languages, mumbles, etc... Basically a SIRI that actually works.

He decided to game-ify it, called it 'Bot-Colony' and eventually got it on Steam Greenlight... it was cancelled in January, but the early-access version should still be available.

I never tried it, but the gist was you play the part of a technician who's solving a mystery on a futuristic island which is staffed by AI robots... Joseph's software would supposedly allow you to talk to them as you would a human.
I'm guessing the cancellation means it didn't work out.

Regardless of his 'failure', I expect this sort of interactive AI will eventually make it's way into mainstream videogames... perhaps Eugene should take a look at AR/VR?

As much as people want better AI, it'll most definitely not happen for quite a few years still. Currently we're stuck with bricks that can't even handle resolutions and such.

It would be cool if you could buy a dedicated AI processor for gaming PCs -- kinda like phys x but for killer AI...
