GameSpy Preview: Champions Online

Though Marvel and DC have both dabbled to varying degrees in pen and paper role-playing, the generic, flexible Hero System ruleset is the undisputed favorite among wannabe super heroes, in large part because the system birthed the beloved "Champions" setting. It's difficult to tease out where Hero System ends and Champions begins; the two were more or less indistinguishable for a long while, but to make a long story short, the Hero System eventually spawned other games in different genres that operated under its ruleset. This is what prompted the hard distinction. And almost 30 years after the system was initially created, something happened that the Hero System's creators would have probably never anticipated: a super hero videogame company purchased the rights to what just may be the third or fourth most popular super hero milieu in the world.
