Source 2 Is Actually Free, Like, For Free

RPS:

Valve’s sudden entry into the engine race, with an official announcement of Source 2, seems to have put them right up front alongside frenzied rivals Unity and Unreal. (Poor old Crytek, eh?) Meeting with studio founder Erik Johnson today, I learned that when they say Source 2 is “free”, they mean it. Unlike Unity’s (much lowered) subscription rates (for larger teams), and Epic’s revenue cut of successful projects, Valve won’t be asking for any money at all. Well, sort of… They just require that the game be launched on Steam, along with anywhere else you might want to sell it.

Glad to see that some popular engines are becoming free. And that means more people will make games which means everyone will benefit

Suggesting they don't want royalties is marketing speak. Its a rather shallow advertisement since they still be picking up the distribution percentage on Steam.

Like this is even a thing to consider. If you're making a PC game you'll want it on steam. End of story. Doesn't matter if you're making it with source 2 or any other engine. So that would happen either way.

Lol!!!

Why in the hell should I go with steam in the first place???

Even if it is the dominant platforme, you can't pretend something free and still stipulate there's no other way of selling your game if you don't stick to steam!!!

That is a lie, there are pleny of real free engines outta there, and they don't tell you where to sell your products and how!!!

Here the spin is you can have it for free but you need your product to be distributed via the steam networks even if you have the means to do it yerself.

@sovkhan
Haha. I pray that you're not for real.

So if the game sells 0 Valve get nothing, that's the gamble they are a business after all so why shouldn't they get profit for their work?

Cannot see how you can spin this other than good

Source 2 isn't that great an engine sadly, it's outdated for today's standards. But could work wonders for indie developers, which I believe this "free" engines are directed to

Source 2 has to be released before you can make that judgement. Source has been out for a while and is pretty outdated.

This is running on an integrated intel iGPU smoothly due to Vulkan.

Valve responds to NY Attorney General lawsuit

Valve has responded to New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit against the firm, stating it does not believe that lootboxes in its Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 games unlawfully encourage minors to gamble, adding it was "disappointed" to see the action go ahead despite efforts to "educate" the NYAG about virtual items since "early 2023."
