Alex E. takes a comparative look at Evolve and Turtle Rock's previous work, Left 4 Dead. The games took similar concepts, but went in vastly different directions.

I disappointed... I found Evolve very nice, not a killer app by the way

Neixus4098d ago

I kiiinda liked it.

But correction of the tile is ''Content cut away for future DLC is not what we wanted''

getrektedmate4098d ago (Edited 4098d ago )

I just hated that the game was $60 and gave you around 3 hours of content and the rest of the content that was supposed to be in the game was cut into DLCs worth more than $140

Edgetroll4098d ago

To be fair, the $140 price tag for DLC is a bit of a misnomer. When the original article came out that stated that value, it added up all the purchasable options while ignoring that a lot of them overlapped in content. It counted things like character packs that sold them bungled together and then the individual characters twice.

Regardless, I agree that the way the DLC was sent forth was a bit excessive. When I looked at Evolve it looked like they were trying to follow the F2P model of games like LoL and DOTA2, but they were still charging the price of a full title.

Stsonic4098d ago

Can you please break down that $140 content because as far as im aware it is all skins and costumes?

averagejoe264098d ago

Nope. Additional hunters are $7.50 and additional monsters are $15.

OrangePowerz4098d ago (Edited 4098d ago )

We can discuss their practice of DLC, but for the game itself it's the game they wanted to make and that's fine by me.

If it's not the game "you wanted" it to be it's not for you. I'm not interested in it but other people enjoy it. Some gamers and games media should stop thinking that they are entitled to such a degree where a dev needs to make a game that is for them or pleases them because otherwise it's rubbish and disappointing.

You could think that thr internet is full of game designers that know everything better and could do it better than the people that actually get paid to make games.

If it's not the game "you wanted" it to be it's not for you

exactly this I saw this game and how much ppl were raving about it and researched the game concept, realised it wasn't a game I wanted to play or remotely interested me and I moved on

BigShotSmoov0074098d ago (Edited 4098d ago )

Yeah I love how a game isn't want someone wanted and then they go online and write a whole article bashing the game, even go on to say this isn't the game "we" wanted, who's "we"? If it's not your thing then fine, but there's thousands of people that enjoy the game and love it for what they wanted, you're opinion isn't he end all be all of the gaming community. I enjoy the game and love it for what it is and what it brings. Really right now there isn't a game like it on current gen and it's only going to get better over time but I know there's people that don't like it at all. It's up to each person's taste of if they like that type of game or not.

ShadowKing-4098d ago

i just like how everyone bashes evolve, but never COD in this way, when THEY DO THE EXACT SAME THING EVERY YEAR. oh yeah, did i mention you pay for all the DLC

thekhurg4098d ago

CoD doesn't have $140 of day one DLC.

pixelsword4098d ago

They're smart enough to announce the $140 worth of DLC after the fact. ;)

porkChop4098d ago

The difference is that COD gives you a full campaign, full coop mode, and a full multiplayer suite. Evolve gives you 3 hours of content. Both are the same price. If you can't see the difference there, then I really don't know what to tell you.

The content in Evolve might be enjoyable for some, but it is not enough for many to justify the price tag. ($80 in Canada including tax)

Allsystemgamer4098d ago

Game prices are now 74.99 here in Canada. It's ridiculous

creatchee4098d ago

3 hours of content? No. Wrong.

Edgetroll4098d ago

I'm not saying it's ok but it seems like COD has kind of hit this stride where people already know what to expect, and they don't fault it for being COD. I'm finding more people being critical of Evolve and how 'dressed up' it was without actually providing a lot of content because it's a new IP.

Maybe it's a reflection of how the gaming community is changing. I for one found the game fun during beta, but not enough for me to buy. I was put off by all the additional content for purchase and the overall repetitiveness of it. In the end all I could think was "I'll definitely get this when it goes on a steam sale with all the content included"

ShadowKing-4098d ago

well, better get used to it or just quit gaming because it will never change.

InTheLab4098d ago

Cod comes loaded with content dude. Now if it was single player on or multiplayers only, it still wouldn't be the same due to the amount of content packed into each mode.

Report: Evolve 2 Was Once in Development, Concept Art Reveals Scrapped Sequel

It has been recently revealed by an artist that a sequel to the 2015 title Evolve was in the works. However, this project wouldn't last long.

jznrpg307d ago

Didn’t bother with the first one.

TheColbertinator307d ago

All I wanted was Left 4 Dead 3 instead

Abnor_Mal306d ago

Was this game ahead of its time? A few years later games like Dead By Daylight, Friday the 13th and other asymmetrical games exploded onto the scene.

MeteorPanda306d ago

if lm not mistaken it started the asymmetrical pvp matches. Evolves logo was a nod to their concept.

The_Blue306d ago

They should have because I played the first one when it was already dead

Evolve or Die: The final days of the follow-up to Left 4 Dead

Back in 2016, Turtle Rock announced that support for its 4v1 monster-hunting shooter Evolve would end but fans wouldn't let it die.

‘Evolve: Stage 2’ is back from the dead as peer-to-peer servers come back online

From NME: "Evolve: Stage 2 had its multiplayer servers shut down back in 2018, but today players are once again able to matchmake and join peer-to-peer multiplayer games.

Several months ago, peer-to-peer functionality was lost for Evolve Legacy, which was the only way fans of the series could play with friends. Upon a multitude of players reaching out to publisher 2K, the issue was eventually fixed earlier in July. It seems 2K have gone a step further now, and reinstated peer-to-peer and matchmaking functionality for Evolve: Stage 2 after four years."

MIDGETonSTILTS171396d ago

^^this, I have so many awesome skins on Xbox that I’d rather not lose

Germaximus1396d ago

Yes so far because it's just the servers alone coming on and the console version never had the free-to-play update.

I imagine if they find people playing the PC version and enough players are enjoying it then they'd probably reconsider opening console as well but I wouldn't count on it.

The game was epic as a monster. Hunters were really boring to play as to me.

LordoftheCritics1396d ago

I used to play this a bit.

Was kinda fun.
