Yea I believe he was talking about PC.
Edit: Quote about DX12 around 22:00

Kayant4105d ago

Yep -

Time stamp - Around 23:51
Phil Spencer - "Porting over to DX12, We have actually seen a 20% increase in GPU Utilization on the same hardware"

freshslicepizza4105d ago

"Porting Shovel Knight to Xbox One and implementing cross play only took 1 day for devs"

this is very exciting for those who don't do pc gaming. it will now be much easier for them to port games over.

Gazondaily4105d ago

People still latch on to this stuff? Just give it up guys. At most, it'll be a tiny difference. Who cares now? If you lot are so wound up over hardware, go get a PC or PS4.

Kayant4104d ago

@moldybread

Yep that's the main point MS themselves have been making when it comes to DX12's effect on XB1.

lifeisgamesok4105d ago

I wonder what the benefits will be since Phil already confirmed full DX12 is coming to XB1

I guess we'll have to wait until this fall's titles and 2016 games :)

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

I'm not trying to troll you or mock you in any way, but you must understand that the Xbox One is running with laptop hardware. Microsoft has probably done their own tests with DX12 on the console that's why they aren't even mentioning the Xbox One in regards to DX12. It's all about Windows 10 and the PC platform.

I have repeatedly stated this when these DX12 articles first started popping up in December 2014 and January, this API will not affect the hardware, what it will do is boost the performance of software. Disagree all you like, but Phil Spencer all but confirmed it when he mentions Fable Legends in the video and it's in plain English.

ThePope4105d ago

@ Igivehugs

First I love the name. Second the X1 is using a fully custom API yes but its as close to a PC as any console has ever been. Porting games over to it from PC will be considerably easier as both will be running DX12. So my question is while Im not saying huge if the PC sees a boost from DX12 and the X1 is a PC (which you state) then doesn't it stand to reason the X1 will see a boost as well. I don't think many people even Phil know what the boost will be as it seems the final version of DX12 has yet to release.

Again I'm not saying every game is going to be this 4K 120 FPS experience now. But once developers get there hands on the new SDK you cant say whats possible. Because no one would have ever said a game like alan wake or TLoU would be possible last gen until it was.

its_JEFF4105d ago

@ThePope The only thing that makes the X1, and PS4, from a PC is that the consoles are a closed system allowing devs to code down to the metal. There is definitely room for optimization. PC's aren't a closed system, they haven't been able to code to the metal but DX12 will allow them to!

Oh and Phil, i believe, use to make games. He's a Dev himself, so he would know about coding. Don't you think it's odd that a GPU that costs $1000 hasn't been able to produce near CGI games on PC yet? These cards have 3/4/5/6 TF of performance. It's because PC dev's couldn't code to the metal to take full advantage of the hardware, also not a lot of people have those amazing cards. Why code for the top 10% of GPUs, the money is in the mid range GPUs.

GameNameFame4105d ago

@life

He already confirmed. "No" "wont be dramatic"

4Sh0w4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

@GameNameFame
He already confirmed. "No" "wont be dramatic"

-But what is dramatic in his mind?..30%, 40%, 45% increase in GPU performance?

-Look I dont believe in any of the secret sauce stuff or daydream about X1 becoming a supercomputer, I enjoy X1 games now even though there are small differences games specs imo they are more fanboy hype than what actual difference we can see on screen. That said, I do generally think DX12 will offer some nice improvements to X1 performance. I, nor anybody in this thread know exactly what that will be but even if its only 5-10% perfomance increase thats great. I just dont understand why some folks think its crazy that fans are interested in what a new API like DX12 has to offer...until we see it actually implemented on PC or X1 I think its very foolish to make any wild statements assuming huge improvements or assuming it will do nothing.

stragomccloud4104d ago

PS4 is also running with gaming laptop hardware too. Just in case the brigade here isn't aware.

PistolsAtDawn4105d ago

He probably was, but at the same time it doesn't rule anything out about X1. If it was about PC (which almost certainly it was), in no way does it describe specifically what it will do for X1. There's even a possibility that it could help the X1 GPU even more...who knows? Esp since it could very well help make using eSRAM/Tiled Resources even easier and using every bit of the GPU more efficiently.

Nekroo914105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

How dumb can you be to think that dx 12 can be more efficient on a already low level acess API, than on pc...

PC as Power but lacks optimization, dx 12 will fix that. The X1 already has low level acess api so it wont do much, if 20% are on pc, which i doubt , then on console its lower than that.

Timesplitter144105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

I gotta admit, I'm much more interested in Valve's Vulkan (the new and upgraded OpenGL) than in DX12. The Vulkan conferences are tomorrow, and apparently it is the future of graphics tech for games. Besides, DirectX is stuck in the past with its non-openness.

Vulkan will be used by UE4, Unity, Source2 and Frostbite

GameDev14105d ago

Am pretty sure as Windows is a popular platform Direct x not being open source doesnt really matter plus am pretty sure DX12 will take advantage of UE4 and Unity as Spencer showed

That being said it is great to see open gl version of Vulkan to see what it will also do for PC

4105d ago
JMaine5184105d ago

I do think and hope DX12 will have an effect on XB1 but I'm not buying 20% GPU increase for the Xbox One

thexmanone4105d ago

Most Sony fans don`t. They don`t seem to want the Xbox one to get better. I`m not sure why, maybe there just scared.

PunisherRevenge4105d ago

I think he was talking about hardware in general. He did not say PC only. He said that the team a Lion Head saw a 20% increase in GPU performance when "PORTING" a game from DX11 to Windows 10 using DX12 on the same hardware. So the increase could be the same for the X1. Also the increase could be even bigger if a game was built from the ground up using DX12 from day one.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 4104d ago
IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

Yes he was talking about PC. The 20% boost was Fable Legends running on PC in particular. The game itself received the performance boost not the hardware.

4105d ago
hello124105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

Phil Spencer when we moved from dx11 to dx12 code we saw a 50 per CPU cent improvement with some games, is this`now been ignored now?

People are still ignoring the performance boosts from changing from dx11 to dx12 on the same hardware!

Fable was ported to dx12 and when that happened according to Phil they saw a 20 per cent improvement (GPU utilisation) on the same exact hardware.

To me that sounds like dx11 Fable was performing (inferior) on the same exact hardware. The API change affected the set hardware.

The question left is though does it matter which hardware it is PC or x box 1 does dx12 affect it know matter what?

To claim he is only talking about PC is untrue fable legends dx12 is coming to PC and the x box 1 and its a crossplay game.

christocolus4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

Love the direction MS is going with their products and services. There will be more information coming out soon and Phil will be taking feedback from xbox fans on twitter. The conference was awesome. Can't wait to see what else MS has in store. E3 will be big definitely expecting to see Qb,Halo5,Forza6,Gears,TR, Salebound, rares new game etc. Also epic is developing an unreal tournament game ground up with dx12.

http://www.geekwire.com/201...

StrayaKNT4105d ago

Do you think unreal tournament will come to xbox? That game looked amazing.

christocolus4105d ago

@Aussie

Its a dx12 title. How hard could it be to port it to xbox one? Hopefully it comes to xbox one.

GameDev14105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

Stop trying to spin it, I (maybe some others) especially am not trying to say DX12 wont bring improvements, again why would microsoft bother making another api if it wasnt going to bring any improvement? I mean does that make sense to you?

It is the platform it would bring the improvement to that is being questioned here, and starting with Mantle, Open GL Next Vulkan and DX12 all have the same task to really go low level on PCs and bring performance boost.

Consoles are already low level so these apis will not necessarily bring big improvements, but obvipusly DX12 will help to optimize and port games better on the Xbox One but not gain the same boost as a PC would get with this low level api

And I quote, this is from Xbox wire website themselves, the context of the 20 percent boost was based on PC.

"DirectX 12 enables PC developers to have a new level of power and control and is a single API developers can access across Windows devices. As shown with Fable Legends running on Unreal Engine 4, there has been a 20% improvement in performance. And as announced today, Epic is creating Unreal Tournament using Unreal Engine 4 running on DirectX 12, which sets a new bar for visual fidelity in PC gaming."

Again this is from Xbox team themselves on this link http://news.xbox.com/2015/0... scroll to the DX12 heading.

This is why they showed UE4 demos on PC, not an Xbox One

GenuineGamer4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

Getting real tired of all these comments on this site about dx12 doing nothing for xbo. Seems the same kind of people claiming ps4 is 50% more powerful than xbo.

I don't pretend to know it all but these people haven't got a clue.

Mikeyy4105d ago

You guys keep telling everybody DX12 will boost XB1 by XX% but yet nobody from Microsoft can confirm this for you? Why is that? Why couldn't today, in front of the world MS say, The Xbox One with receive a 20% GPU boost on games utilizing DX12? They won't say it for a reason.

And don't start with MR. X's Hogwash about MS just being "quiet" and wants to surprise you all, what a load of crap, MS isn't ever quiet about anything that they could even remotely brag about. Hence all the BRAGGING about PC benefits..

There is an extreme lack of sources saying DX12 will revolutionize XB1.

Never mind the fact that it counters everything we know about consoles, Which already have a Low level API by the way. Consoles are to the metal by default, they are static, PC's are not. Hence its big gains with DX12.

Convas4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

In order for the PS4 to succeed, all advantages for and improvements to the Xbox One must be criticized and downplayed.

@Above: Did OP say anything about Mr.X? Seems you're just spooling for a fight.

JasonKCK4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

@Mikeyy, GenuineGamer has a point though. Most of the people who have been downplaying DX12 from day one have come from the Sony camp. All you have to do is click the names and read the comment history and you can easily see their agenda. Every time news pops up about DX12 the first 5-10 comments are almost always PS fanboys downplaying it.

GameDev14105d ago

Lots of them do downplay it, but is this seen as downplaying because they make valid points about the impact of DX12 on the Xbox One? (remember they cant say the same for PC as DX12 benchmark for PC has shown improvements) but no noticeable improvement has been mentioned for the Xbox One, or is it because they are just trolling?

I have seen either side of trolling and valid points from the so called Sony camp

All I know is that every console will improve over time with new SDKs and API's but clearly DX12 big performance boost has been proven numerous for only PC

GenuineGamer4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

Here's one quote from today at gdc

*DX12 has seen up to 50% better CPU utilization over DX11 & up to 20% increase in GPU performance on the same hardware.

It doesn't say PC just the same hardware. So could be a mobile phone, a tablet, Xbox one, or PC. More like all of them.

What some people don't seem to get is whenever MS opens their mouth about dx12 improvements they mention windows 10, Not specifically PC.

Xbox one will run Windows 10. and will receive the improvements that dx12 offers for game development.

I expect MS to go more into detail regarding XBO over the coming days. At least i hope they do so we can all stop arguing back and forth about it.

GameDev14105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

I like your take it is honest and not trying to prove you know better but trying to gain knowledge

From the knowledge I have gained watching this whole fanboy turmoil of what improvements DX12 will bring to XBox One, The knowledge has only brought me to see DX12 is a low level api which PC needs which is similar to Mantle, Vulkan so therefore will bring improvements, consoles are low level so even if Sony had their own DX12 version lets say, it wont bring the big improvements hence why AMD clarified consoles dont need MANTLE.

All I know is that DX12 isnt in the Xbox One for show but will for instance help port games easily and optimize certain engine games better for Xbox One as a developer sees fit not all this theoretical power talk as this improvement has only been shown for PC in benchmarks since DX12 was announced.

We are a very long way from when DX12 was announced, Forza shown on PC with DX12, Unreal T on UE4 PC engine, same as Fable Legends. Any huge performance for the One would have been mentioned by now

People are so desperate to find information that things said about this topic keep being taken out of context, Xbox One WILL definitely improve over tine with DX12 same as last gen consoles had SDKs that improved them

BTW Windows 10 is just a software you know, DX12 is being talked about in the XB1 as bringing more power to hardware rather than just optimizing softwares on it better

GenuineGamer4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

@gamedev1:

A few key features that i have learned about dx12 is its ability to allow all the CPU cores to talk to the GPU all at the same time. Where with dx11 they can all talk at the same time but ultimately have to wait in line for their commands to be dealt with.

Another key feature is dx12 tiled resources with better ESram management.

I have heard that ESram can hold around 6gbs of texture data with dx12 tiled resources. Something xbo currently cant do with dx11 software.

When phil said dx12 would unlock features for devs this is one of them. Not changing the hardware but unlocking its capabilities for devs.

32mb esram in todays world seems so small but with dx12 it makes sense.

These two dx12 features alone in my eyes are massive improvements for xbo.

My point is that there are so many features about dx12 that we do not know of and at the end of the day its not simply about getting closer to the metal as so many people think.

dawa4105d ago

It is a PC reference as said by Major Nelson: http://www.reddit.com/r/xbo...

phil was playing pocket pool for the whole of that conference

phil was smart not to mention dx12 and the xboxone, phil doesn't want to break there little hearts

I also don't thing steam will be too delighted with Microsofts new found love for gaming and its new store

dveio31d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing31d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9231d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit31d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing31d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9231d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
