Sony ‘doing surprising things’ with Dualshock 4 in VR

VRFocus- Input remains one of the biggest issues for virtual reality (VR) experiences. Even if a head-mounted display (HMD) offers a flawless sense of presence, a user not being able to move either own arms and legs within the virtual world can bring the sense of immersion toppling down. With that in mind, VR fans wouldn’t think that the PlayStation 4′s Dualshock 4 controller would be the perfect way to control videogames with the Project Morpheus HMD. But, according to Sony Computer Entertainment, it’s possible to do some ‘surprising things’ with the controller.

Sweet, can't wait to see it in action. Would like to see the touchpad being used in very unique ways

Muzikguy4100d ago

IMHPPO (in my honest personal professional opinion), they should forget about the touchpad. It's a battery drain and I don't like it. So it adds 6 buttons, big deal. The trade-off for battery was in no way worth it if you ask me

Kryptix4100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

Yea, they should forget about the touchpad and remove it. Something that is a fresh, innovative part of the controller. I don't like it when Sony or MS try to enhance the experience, it's too much for me. /s

It's the light bar that drains the controller, not the touch pad. And actually, combining VR and the touchpad is a great idea, I can see how it can work. Being able to push in game "buttons" with it and more accurately moving pieces of the world you see in front of you. Imagine at one point, you pick a dusty book and you remove the dust using your thumb to uncover it's true nature.

Well I'm glad Sony is really using the Dualshock's 4 capabilities and properly integrating it into VR. Next generation, we'll most likely see the Dualshock evolve with new features to enhance the experience and make it more interactive for the player.

The public has spoken. The touch pad is marvelous.

sony just need to upgrade the battery and its all sorted.
im suprised they havent already tbh.
i use a charging dock(official sony )so pads always charging and i have never ran out of juice.
if someoen is gaming for more than 6 hours they need a life and get outside,or at least buy a second pad.

I still don't like the touchpad idea, there's no way to change that. VR you wouldn't need a touchpad, just move your hand or something. In any event the ideas of using the touchpad and VR haven't been shown yet: I'd be surprised if it works out that way. I don't think the controller is the greatest thing. The speaker is useless for me, don't like the touchpad, and that light isn't as great either. I got the camera too and even with that light the movement isn't as precise as one would think. Move was better IMO

@UK
It's because of the poor battery that I have 2 controllers. That combo works great. I still think the battery needs to be better, as you say.

I think utilizing the ps move will be the best way to go simply because it will add a lot more the immersion. It'll be nice if they remodel it so it can have a analog where the ps move designated button is instead.

uth114101d ago

Isn't this what the whole point of the light bar is?

And the DS4 has wii-like motion control which isn't utilized in many games.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4101d ago

Yep. The DS4 already has *Move technology integrated and it also has motion tracking that works with the PlayStation camera.

Yaay4me4101d ago

they thought this whole thing out from the get go. The light bar is meant for the VR experience. Im getting butterflies thinking about it. lol

uth114101d ago

but they should still allow you to turn it off for most games that don't need it :)

Yaay4me4101d ago (Edited 4101d ago )

I'm glad, I actually prefer that Sony make more games compatible with DS4 rather than the move. I have both but I prefer the classic control scheme for gaming. Of course there will be those games where the move will be more suitable for the VR experience. Either way, should be fun.

"brand new video games" for Morpheus. that makes me happy.

Fatal-Aim4101d ago

Its crazy how people are just now understanding the purpose of the gyro, touch pad and light bar. When the controller was first unveiled did I already know what the reason for it was.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2143d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
