EA Closes Maxis Emeryville Studio

Maxis Emeryville, the studio behind Spore and the latest Sim City, has officially been closed by EA. This news was broken by Guillame Pierre, lead gameplay scripter on Sim City, via Twitter.

So EA first shoots them in the knee, then cripples them and now finally puts them down

Pefect example of how EA ruins studios

zeee4093d ago

So what is going to happen to the SimCity games?

Brotard4094d ago

You heard about the phantom dust situation right? Microsoft for the ground works from them then took the project from the studio forcing the studio to close down. Corporate commander is an ass

Too many Suits in the kitchen and the restaurant gets closed while the Suit moves on to destroy something else.

Hope these people find a home somewhere else and would love to see a good number of them get together and make an Indi simulation game that trumps the latest Sim game. Shouldn't be too hard considering how much they stripped out of it.

Retroman4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

EA did same to Blackbox studio,Criterion,Pandemic,Dang er,Dice studios cripple them, shoots them in the knees , finally put them out of their missurey.
NFS has not been the same since.
poor Ghost games shot gun aiming at you now.

Cities Skyline = March 10th.

Be there or be square.

This isn't cool though.

Yea, thats the game i'm looking forward to.I tried to get into SimCity but it was just too boring and glitchy.I loved the art direction though. The whole tilt shift effect made it kinda addicting in a way.

Maxis Emeryville are a talented bunch, i'm pretty sure they will land on their feet

Leave Maxis alone, a bunch of the computer games I played as a kid were from them.

Sim City
Sim Ant
Sim Town
Sim Park

PurpHerbison4094d ago

I played the hell out of those games and The Sims until I got my hands on Roller Coaster Tycoon 1&2.

rainslacker4093d ago

SimCity is my favorite game of all time. Logged more hours than I care to recount on it. I never bothered with the most recent one though. Just stuck to SC4 since I didn't like the direction the new one went towards.

I doubt the Sim series will go down with the studio. As far as I remember, much of Maxis' staff was transferred to EA's Redmond studio after SimCity 4 released.

Otherwise, I would prefer they let Maxis make it's own games instead of dictating EA policies on them.

gangsta_red4094d ago

Dang...that really sux. Wasn't a big fan of the Sim games but they did the creator wrong from what I read a while back and now they are closing the studio which has been around the bay area for a while now.

Sorry to hear that, hope all these guys find something else soon.

TitanUp4094d ago

expected, EA decided always online was the correct answer and Maxis are the ones that had to deal with the fallout.

No ‘The Sims 5’ Coming as EA Sets Multiplayer Expansion to Current Game

Electronic Arts‘ popular free-to-play life-simulation video game franchise “The Sims” is breaking from tradition, with the gaming company confirming Tuesday that there are no plans for a “The Sims 5” game as the successor to the current edition, “The Sims 4.”

Instead, “The Sims 4,” now a 10-year-old title and the longest-running installment in the franchise’s 25-year history, will continue to receive updates and paid expansions, most notably a multiplayer mode and partnering with some “Sims” players who develop their own custom content for the game to sell it through the EA store as “Creator Kits.”

Deathdeliverer607d ago

After seeing inzoi I’d delay with some experimental “expansions” like multiplayer too.

cammers1995606d ago

Inzoi will be better anyways. Sims 4 is garbage.

Simcity Developer Maxis Once Made Games For Businesses

TechRaptor writes "Roughly 30 years ago, SimCity was making waves as a fun new simulation game. Players could build out an entire city and watch it spring to life — or die a horrible, fiery death. Fans had loads of fun with the games until the franchise (and its developer) more or less fell flat by the mid-2010s, but they might not know that Maxis once made business games, too."

Sadly Maxis games changed a lot after what EA did to the studio and Will Wright leaving the studio. I'd welcome more games like this returning, I don't know if they will, but if they do I'm all for it.
