In Japan, nobody takes issue with an average role-playing game. Whether it's the terminally dull Tales series, or Dragon Quest, the most overachieving franchise of all time, the JRPG user base is still content with mediocrity. PLAY have seen several games defy that trend in recent years – Oblivion mustered some decent Japanese sales, but the time has come to move on. Valkyria Chronicles, with the most distinctive and original graphical style PLAY have seen in recent times, makes a valiant attempt to push the genre forward. By mixing grid-based, tactical RPG fare with straight-up real-time combat, Valkyria Chronicles shows that Sega Japan is just as ambitious as Western RPG developers, like BioWare and Bethesda. Now that the game has been confirmed for UK release, PLAY couldn't be any more optimistic about the title's prospects. Valkyria Chronicles is a PS3-exclusive, innovative and beautiful Japanese RPG, and is, in principal, the type of game that the PlayStation 3 needs the most.

While the Valkyria Chronicles franchise has been somewhat dormant for four years, it certainly hasn't been forgotten.
Sega is great for relegating its characters to cameos in other games. Heaven forbid they announced Valkyria Chronicles 5 or remaster VC 2 & 3.
