The Wii U Isn’t Dead…It’s Just Getting Started

VGN Author writes: When the Wii U was first announced I was super pumped to get my hands on the system. Fast forward a few months and I would actually get to see and feel the Wii U in person at E3. Although the Wii U demo console at E3 only had a Zelda video playing, I knew the console would have great potential when it finally released.

marloc_x4107d ago (Edited 4107d ago )

!Sock It To Me!

Bansai4106d ago

wake me up when it starts, it's been only what, 2 years? xD

badz1494106d ago

getting started? that's what I call a Déjà vu

Jughead34164106d ago

lol. @Bansai - agreed. 2 years in and their just now getting started? Guess they projected so high, that they'd give the competition a head start. Now it's on!!! lol

N4g_null4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

They started a long time ago but the market has changed. Nintendo will be fine as long a healthy group of game play based fans exsist. Many are just assuming nintendos games suck without even playing them. You also have people that have played these games yet believe they are tired of old games or ethier long for different themes.

Console gaming has never been about high end tech. The veterans know this. The arguments are coming from wishful thinking people or new gamers hoping that rooting for one brand verses the other will actually benefit them. Those guys have to ask themselves how is that working out for them. They have witnessed the worst launch window games. Broken, drip feed dlc, micro transaction based publishing and covert online activation drm based on broken games. Just to get a little jump in graphics. There is some truly naive fueled situations going on here. The publisher are going to milk this really good also. I mean you guys are giving them a monopoly why change now?

There still is an idea or myth that sony makes super powered hardware, which has actually never been true. Sony over hypes all of their specs and fans fight tooth and nail over it because they want to believe. If only other adults felt this way about sony. That would single handle bring sony back from their financial woes. Then there is the idea that 3rd parties are making great games. I'll give you some but it's not worth prebuying a console and thst game until the goods are made.

The shift is people want 3rd party games more than first parties gen. Many sony and ms fans are turning to 3rd parties because they are tired out by the cons and hype and bullshit or pc builds.

Nintendo doesn't work for new hardcore 20k-40k income gamers because they want to feel and justify being an adult. It is understandable. You just bought your first house and mario is no longer something you need.

Nintendo really needs to establish a few brands for these gamers. In the meantime gamer will get curious about the wiiu and new 3ds as they reach closer to spending $700 on a console that had huge hype, power that is only used for cut scenes.

It is actually a question of when the gaming populous get over the hype pill and start gaming and having fun again.

The wii was seen as a fad but it was actually ok for all adults to own it due to its utility in play. The next step is content. I'm sure there are plenty of new comers that can get it done.

Magicite4106d ago

It was never alive to begin with, so it cant be dead.
But at least Nintendo apologists can keep it alive with their excuses.

AJBACK2FRAG4106d ago (Edited 4106d ago )

I've got an excuse. Nintendo has been giving a clinic on video game software development this generation. Every piece of Nintendo developed software released for the Wii U this generation has looked great controlled great, has been very fun to play and has played virtually perfect straight out of the box. Who can say that this generation? NOBODY. I think Nintendo has released video game software that not only has been some of the best this generation but has been some of the best in the history of the company! That's a pretty good evcuse but that's just my opinion lol!! I think when you buy a home video game console based soley on ram you're always going to lose. Hardware does not sell video games. Video games sell hardware. The Wii U hosts a better library of video game software and higher rated video games than the PS4 and Xbox One combined!!! What does that tell you? The Wii U has not sold more home video game consoles than the PS4 but the PS4 has not been able to host better games than the Wii U. It's my my opinion they never wiil.

spektical4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

@aj
I disagree. The only wiiu games I've enjoyed through and through are Mario kart 8 and smash. Wind waker was OK but I already played that. Bayonetta is a time attack. I swear no one talked about how you feel rushed throughout every piece. Pikman was meh, 3d world was ok. Hyrule warriors is a glorified wiiu tech demo.

All in all I'm not surprised by the quality and how the games mean little to me. This is how the Wii went for me as well. I'll take the new Zelda metroid and fox games though.

pcz4106d ago

nintendo have been defeated with the wiiu. there is no chance they can win.

it was released 3 years ago, nintendo should have got it started then, not now.

its too late.

Realplaya4105d ago

While you claim defeat in another 4 years they'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

pcz4105d ago

to declare bankruptcy, yes lol

ZyroXZ24107d ago

While as a Nintendo fan I highly doubt it can become the highest selling console this generation, I WILL say that it's far from being dead.

Anyone looking at its 2015 releases can easily tell:
- Splatoon
- Yoshi's Woolly World
- Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Starfox U
- Zelda U
- Devil's Third
- Mario Party 10
- Mario Maker

That's 8 exclusives coming out and there's 9 months left in the year (it's basically March in a couple days!).

mikeslemonade4106d ago

I can make a great list like that for Gamecube and N64 as well. Check out there install base.

kwandar4106d ago

You do that Mike, and when you're done why don't you tell us .... oh ... you can't .... lacking bubbles?

Must be those pithy comments of yours.

4106d ago
Concertoine4106d ago

When did he say those games would help it sell well?

I sincerely hope your a troll and not someone who actually thinks he says relevant stuff.

deafdani4106d ago

What's your point, Mike, that the Cube and N64 sold poorly?

Well, the thing is, they still turned a profit for Nintendo, and guess what... the Wii U is getting profitable now.

Anyway, you admitted those consoles, and the Wii U, had / have, in fact, lots of great games, yet you continue to troll every single damn Wii U article on here because apparently all that matters for you are salers. I guess you're not a gamer like us, only a shareholder from a rival company that only cares about sales. Tsk.

Jughead34164106d ago

@Zyro - I agree that these are some cool games. But I'm old school man. I've been playing a lot of these same franchises since the 80s. It's like, how long can I play these before I get tired of them? Like, ok. What kind of Kingdom is the princess running? She doesn't have security? lol. She keeps getting captured by reptiles. lol. Can you imagine still playing call of duty in the year 2030? That's kinda what it's like for me right now.

ZyroXZ24106d ago

I'm old school, too, and that's the thing: Nintendo never fails to impress me with continued creativity. No matter how "old" Mario himself seems to be, I was still swept up with a smile on my face and had fun in SM3DW. And yet, I have played every main Mario adventure since the original Super Mario Bros on the NES.

They always find a way, and for those of us who look beneath the surface, we still find that Nintendo hasn't actually lost any magic. What they've lost is marketing.

Aceman184105d ago

from that list i only want

Xenoblade CX
Starfox
Zelda

not really interested in the others as not every game nintendo makes is a must have. it's really sad that nintendo gamers didnt truly support those new games that didnt come from nintendo themselves.

roboshort4105d ago

That list is a better variety of games than those coming out for the other systems despite being a much smaller list. Unfortunately, most gamers give into the hype surrounding "epic" games and aren't so interested in gameplay.

Aceman184105d ago

@robo

Please tell me why I should be interested in the others I really don't care about.

Those are the 3 games I want the most, and those 3 games will be more than enough to satisfy my gaming on the Wii U.

pcz4105d ago (Edited 4105d ago )

- Splatoon -run of the mill game that is only getting coverage because its from nintendo.

- Yoshi's Woolly World - looks fantastic, but how many of these games does wiiu need? we have mario bros wii, kirby, donkey kong etc

- Xenoblade Chronicles X -epic

- Starfox U - nobody can say if this game will even be good. judging by the way they talk about the control method, its going to be a disappointment

- Zelda U - classic

- Devil's Third - the wiiu needs more of these types of games. one per year is not enough. instead of nintendo wasting time making identical platformers with different characters, they should fill the hole in the wiius library for these types of games

- Mario Party 10 - crap

- Mario Maker - rubbish

Aceman184105d ago

They just need to give me

Xenoblade
Zelda
starfox

Metallox4105d ago

"Judging by the way they talk about the control method, its going to be a disappointment".

What are you talking about, anyway? The game is confirmed to have traditional controls as well.

And I can see failing Splatoon for another big reason, and it's that succeed with that style.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 4105d ago
AJBACK2FRAG4106d ago (Edited 4106d ago )

Zyrox72 there's a reason for that. One of the main reason's is a new main Mario game is released based on new hardware. If you look at a game like Mario Galaxy and a game like Mario Sunshine you see two games that are only similar in the cast of chracter's, there's the word Mario in the name and Mario must (always) rescue Princess Peach but that's it! The game play ideas of both games are so radically different but both have an incredible attention to detail and how can you not smile when you start up a new Mario game? To me it's impossible. There'a feeling there almost impossible to explain but sooo tangible you could almost touch it!!!

Now think of this. What if Activision released one Call of Duty per generation? Of course some dlc for cash, new skin's gun's, map's etc. but they had five or six years to put out a new game? With a little innovation we could almost be excited for the next game! We could be maybe even surprised! We could even look forward to the next game instead of dreading it. Madden same thing Both company's could refresh both those series to an astonishing degree. Why don't they? Money money money MONEY! In my opinion it's short term cash when both company's could be creating something special. Activision and EA are in my opinion killing their respective gplden geese!!!!

Fro_xoxo4106d ago

The perception online is that, if a console isn't leading the market in terms of sales. It has failed.

It's funny, the Wii U isn't selling the best, but It probably has the best first-party offerings.

Strip the other two consoles of third party support. . let's see what you're left with ^_^.

AKR4106d ago (Edited 4106d ago )

Very true.

You really have to hand it to Nintendo; if either Sony or Microsoft were in their position, chances are they couldn't do it. At first, Sony's first-party offerings were major, but really from since the PS3, they've practically let the third-party companies do all the heavy lifting. Microsoft has been no better, actually, worse.

Nintendo are the only ones that can practically support their own platform ON THEIR OWN, and still make a profit. That's amazing.

Spotie4106d ago

They also don't have a choice. They've also cheaped out on hardware the last few generations. They also rely the heaviest on old franchises.

Don't let your bias blind you. Nintendo supports their console on their own because they pretty much don't have a choice.

Nevers0ft4105d ago

@Spotie I think AKR's point was that Nintendo is the only company capable of supporting a console almost entirely on their own because of the strength of their titles. Sure they don't have much choice because the Wii U does lack 3rd party support but the consistency of the 1st party stuff is impressive.

LordDhampire4106d ago

The fact of the matter is sony and microsoft both have third party support which nintendo doesnt, so you can pick either of those combine their exclusives with all the third party games and get the real number for games you wont be able to play on a wii u in 2015.

Until capcom/nintendo start catering to the western market instead of just their home country, Ill pass.

kwandar4105d ago

PCs have fantastic 3rd party support too - just sayin.

wonderfulmonkeyman4106d ago

No, it's not.
You think it is because you hate it and want to quote sales and third party support as your evidence, but you couldn't be more off-base.

dark-kyon4106d ago

Isn't dead now,is waiting to get his zelda of turn, when zelda u is out then is the end for the console, you have you mario, mario kart, zelda and smash for this gen.Nintendo must be working in this moment in the new mario for his next console.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

Nintendo filed a lawsuit in the United States Court of International Trade.

Nintendo of America is suing the United States government over the sweeping tariffs President Donald Trump put in place last year, according to a complaint filed Friday in the U.S. Court of International Trade and obtained by Aftermath.

AuraAbjure80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer81d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot81d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box80d ago (Edited 80d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno81d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay81d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno79d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK79d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
