Phil Spencer Talks About Fall Games

Microsoft’s Xbox division head Phil Spencer is working on finalizing the Xbox One fall line-up, and part of that work is actually testing the games out and see if they’re up to par.

christocolus4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

Cant wait to see Halo5, TR , Scalebound and Rares game. I hope there'll be pre-e3 announcements just like last year.

Abash4134d ago

Fall is still long time away, Microsoft should have had some big exclusives ready for the first half of the year really

Fro_xoxo4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

There's Ori releasing next month.

And, Quantum Break sometime in the summer.

There are third-party games too you know?

Also, it's better to release quality titles than just putting something out there for the sake of it.

christocolus4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

I really don't mind. there's plenty to keep me occupied till then and some new titles will definitly be released before fall.

i'm not done with last falls releases either still got shadow of mordor, Sunset O and Halo mcc on my plate and my brother just got me DAI, i'll also be picking up state of decay, ori, smite and a couple others and then there are a number of third party titles i'm looking forward to also. Hopefully ill be done before fall and ready for Quantum Break, Halo5, TR , Fable legends and hopefully Gears collection.

NatureOfLogic_4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

Fall? It's still early in the year and he's telling gamers to look forward to fall. I'm so happy I don't own a Xbox One right now. The lack of exclusives throughout the year is so disappointing. Also being the weaker console and receiving inferior multiplats don't help.

LexHazard794134d ago

For me these games are coming perfect time. My work usually ends late Nov. Early Dec...Xbox One will have awesome games at that time. Til then I have a PS4 to hold me over and whatever games Xbox has coming from now til then.

Bigpappy4134d ago

The title is misleading once again.

He doesn't talk about any games in particular. All he said, is that game that are playable now will have better quality by the Fall.

Multiplatguy4134d ago

I don't mind them bunching them all into the second half of the year. It's much better than them rushing a few games in order to have something at the start of the year.

Usually most people would agree with allowing devs to do their thing and letting them release when ready.

There is plenty of third party games to keep us occupied until they do come, it shouldn't matter what time of the year the first party games come at, as long as we get them and they are good.

Kribwalker4134d ago

I play baseball from March to october, on two teams aswell my 8 year old son plays baseball too, and I bought a new travel trailer last year too, so when there's no baseball we go camping, so if they load it up in the fall I'm all good with that, because that's when most of my gaming happens

Automatic794134d ago

He mentions 4 of the big 15 games, 1 & 3 Pty. Lol wow that is a massive amount of games. Just for the fall.

frenchtoast4133d ago

MS' biggest problem is that all their games come out in the fall, so there's nothing to look forward to the rest of the year.

Well we know 3 of them for fall. Halo 5, Forza 6 and RotTR.

holysmokesbatman4134d ago

Need Halo 5 so bad! AND Marcus Phoenix collection please Santa Phil!

christocolus4134d ago

same here bro, I really want to to see Halo5 sp also Shinobi confirmed gears collection for release this year, lets hope he is right.

Fall should be awesome for everybody, but I have a feeling we will be getting a surprisingly good summer as well.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4134d ago

What about the spring and summer? Correct me if i'm wrong, but those seasons exist too...

hello124134d ago

Well you could say the same for Sony is that all you got for summer and winter uncharted? Microsoft has least 4 big exclusives coming up we know of only one for Sony so far if its not delayed.

BlackTar1874134d ago

Except for the fact you have games to play in those other months from Sony.

It's the same thing every year man sorry but it's dumb Drought for 3/4 a year then exclusives all in 2 months then claim victory for the people who have short attention spans.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

Disgea 5

Persona 5

Omega Quintet

Until Dawn

Ratchet & Clank Remastered

Dragon Quest Heroes

God Eater Rage Burst

Let It Die

SOMA

Everybody's Gone To The Rapture

There's more, but I think that's enough.

So what about spring and summer? Last time I checked there are 4 seasons in a year right?

PrinceOfAllSaiyans4134d ago

Except for the fact that Bloodborne, MLB 15 The Show, Tearaway Unfolded, Until Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, Hotline Miami 2, Toukiden, and etc are all out within the next few months. Don't try to downplay the PS4's lineup.

OT- They should really spread their releases out. I know they're trying to release everything in the fall to make the illusion that they're lineup outnumbers the competition.

MrSec844134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

You absolutely cannot say the same for Sony, they have way more big exclusives coming:

1)The Order just landed, 2)Bloodborne is up next month, 3)Ratchet & Clank, 4)Until Dawn, 5)Uncharted 4, 6)Dragon Quest Heroes, which is now a PS4 exclusive in the west.
7)Deep Down, 8)Let it Die, 9)Drawn to Death, 10)Fat Princess Adventures, 11)Killstrain, 12)Tearaway Unfolded.

Persona 5 may be a cross gen, but that's a massive deal!

There are also big indies like Rime, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, WiLD (Michel Ancel, I don't need to say much more), Alienation.

Sony has already said they have more to announce, Bend have been working on something for like 3 years, Killzone usually gets a release every 2 years, since KZ2 came out.
GT7 will likely be ready by December.

The list just keeps going on and on.

MS has Halo 5, Quantum Break and Forza 6, that's 3 exclusives, with Rise of the Tomb Raider confirmed to be a timed Xbox exclusive, that's also coming to 360 and Fable Legends is now going to PC, along with Xbox One.

The list of outright AAA exclusives is over 4X the amount MS has for XB1, then there's 4 huge indies and Sony has more cakes baking in their oven than MS does.

It's a lock for Sony on the exclusives front!

tinynuggins4134d ago

Reading these lists of upcoming ps4 games make me realize I made the right choice in going with Xbox one. i'm not saying any of these games are bad, they just don't interest me with the exception of Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Remastered. I get that everyone has different tastes and that's great, to each his own.

halfblackcanadian4134d ago

@MrSec84

I like that you've convinced yourself that there are only 3 exclusives hitting this year for Xbox One.

Also, since when did being on PC take away from exclusivity, let alone last gen?

Ratchet & Clank is a remaster, Tearaway is also basically a redone version of a game for a failed handheld and you even mention Persona 5 in the same post...

Sony having more to announce isn't a crutch either, both have unannounced content.

@MichaelLito79

Nice list, but Velocity 2x released on PS4 a while back I believe. Think it was a PS+ title even.

allastocata4134d ago

I love how everyone up plays every indie game coming on the ps4 but ignores the xb1 indie line up when listing games. The only reason ps4 has a stronger spring line up is because the order got delayed, which was smart on Sony, because it sold more units as an anticipated title than a released title. Deep down is definitely not coming out this year. How many of your listed games are AAA and have a release date. We can throw indie titles at each other all day, but I think if you put'the adventures of fat princess' on a list at least consider Ori or screamride in your argument

DOMination-4134d ago

Stop with the macho lists already. We all know that some games are releasing at some point for some consoles but unless you're going to put WarDevil, The Last Guardian and Agent on there I'm frankly not interested.

DigitalRaptor4133d ago (Edited 4133d ago )

Nice try KNWS, but the rest of us live in a lovely place known as reality.

I won't bother with the lists, because I know I will get responses with indie games, which is exactly my point. I thought those things weren't worth a damn, but in this drought, that is all you're getting.

And even worse, defending them for shoving all their games in the fall/holiday season. That ensures certain individual games won't sell as well and will be cannibalised by Halo's crazy holiday marketing department. Take Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2 as your best examples. I'm not saying they should rush out games that aren't ready, but they should at least better manage their schedule of releases.
----

@ halfblackcanadian

Ratchet & Clank is NOT a remaster. It's a complete from-the-ground-up reboot with a separate vision of Solana Galaxy to go along with the film version. Updated gameplay AND next-gen visuals. That's a very exciting prospect for long-time PlayStation, Insomniac and Ratchet fans: http://www.insomniacgames.c...

Tearaway is a remastered version of a fantastic handheld games which has almost 50% new content. We know the quality of this will be great.

Persona 5.. well I'm sure you haven't seen the gameplay trailer if you have that stance. This game will own all. Very niche, but pure brilliance.

And the fact that Sony has more to announce even when they have a lot more already announced than the competition is very telling of what he was trying to say. Sony does just have way more internally developed projects and curated content from second and third party devs and indie studios working exclusively with them.

pompombrum4134d ago

Was just thinking this. Phil Spencer and Microsoft have done a great job turning things around but they really need to spread their games out better.

Automatic794134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

@IGive

So having the following:

Idarb
The Escapist
Pneuma Breath of Life
LA Cops
Fruit Ninja 2
ScreamRide
Ori and Blind Forest
White Night
Dungeons and Dragon Neverwinter
State of Decay Year One Edition
Velocity 2x
Forza Horizon 2- Fast and the Furious
World of Tanks
Fable Legends
Smite

All of sudden they don't count as games for the spring. You and your co conspirators. Lol

BlackTar1874131d ago (Edited 4131d ago )

Actually according to the xbox only faithful those do not count as games.

You should really take that up with your fellow xbox fans why they choose to make a decision to null those titles as unworthy titles.

This list presented the otherway would get this response from XBox faithful FTP FTP INDIE INDIE INDIE nothing good.

Is there nothing for my X1 in 1st/2nd Qrt?. I got my X1 thanksgiving, and I'm done with the 5 games I got free. I really never cared for Halo, so 5 is lost on me...

What I want is Quantum Break, Fable legends, Rise of Tomb Raider & Forza 6 like yesterday! ...Dang!, it's gonna be a long summer until X1 exclusives arrive...and whatever hidden IP's Phil McCrackin' is holding back for E3/Gamescom ;/

Slevon4134d ago

ori next month if you're into that sorta thing

tinynuggins4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

Also, give the screamride demo a run, it might surprise you. I love it, looking forward to picking it up next week when it launches. I've also heard good things about Idarb if that's your sort of thing, it's free with games for gold. going to give that a shot this weekend.

Izalith4134d ago (Edited 4134d ago )

So the first half year do not count? Not a single exclusive I want this half year.

I want Microsoft to spread the titles more around in a year, not only on holiday and fall season.

Ryan7414134d ago

Quantum Break has me most excited, but Tomb Raider is a close second.

Phil Spencer Was Good for Xbox, but His Legacy Is Complicated

Was Phil Spencer good for Xbox? Whatever you think of the retiring boss’s decade-plus tenure, there was rarely a dull moment.

Lightning77103d ago

Too soon to say. What if things are more of the same? That's my biggest fear.

KyRo102d ago

You don't get rid of big portions of a division to replace them to do the same thing. MS has been critical of Xbox for a few years now.

As a Sony fan, I hope they can bring competition back to Sony because I think Sony have become very complacent the generation. They haven't had time try and whilst there's been a few good exclusives, nothing on the level or as memorable as previous PS generations.

S2Killinit102d ago

I disagree with your blanket statement but overall yeah I think they need to step up more. However, I’m not sure that has anything with xbox but rather with the disruptions we had at the beginning of the generation. Covid, and then the shortage in chips, then the ram…

MrDead102d ago

Yes the industry and it's workforce thank Phil for the massive industry consolidation, thousands fired and still being fired because of MS buyups and for making people like Bobby Kotick even richer.

Reaper22_102d ago

Thats true. Bobby did get a little richer. But name a CEO who isn't rich or getting richer. When I look around the industry I see a bunch of people getting fired. Not just from Microsoft. That is, unless you think the devs from Bluepoint deserved to be fired. Unfortunately, things like this will continue to happen whether you like it or not.

MrDead102d ago

Can you list other companies that are doing mass layoffs because of spending $80 billion on massive industry consolidation? Can you list other companies that purchased two of the largest publishers to make the industry less competitive?

Your fangirling over MS's corporate greed doesn't work on me kid, it does expose you though.

CrashMania102d ago

Was he? It became slightly better after he took over, but it turned in to a gen of just halo gears and forza. And he tried to monopolise massive parts of the industry with ridiculous acquisitions that ironically lead to the opposite, a near complete collapse of xbox console sales, and putting their tentpole IPs everywhere, all but abandoning xbox consoles going forward for a PC disguised like one.

Reaper22_102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

Id say his legacy is complicated, but if you focus on all the bad and ignore the positive things anyone can seem bad. He did have some positive impacts on the xbox platform.
Launched and grew Gamepass-
Invested in backwards compatibilty enabling thousands of older titles to play on modern hardware-
Grew the xbox box first party lineup
Brought xbox into the PC space
Hardware and feature improvements for xbox consoles
Pushed for cross-play support

And there's more but if you asked xbox gamers they'd say that he is viewed as overall a positive thing for the brand. No one expects non xbox gamers to say many positive things about him or the brand. Project Helix happened under his leadership and that is seen as a positive for the brand too.

SonyStyled102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

Launching and growing Gamepass as a positive? When it was $1 absolutely! This is also what fueled the death of Xbox as the standard living room console

TiredGamer102d ago

Agree. With how XBox imploded after the attempt to monopolize the industry, and one of the worst launches of a new console, we might be edging to Phil being a disaster to Xbox in the long run.

MDTunkown102d ago

He was good the first 6 months as the lead

Agent75101d ago

Then he forgot about the games. Poor Phil.

Phil Spencer Retiring, Sarah Bond Out, Microsoft AI Exec Asha Sharma Named New Xbox Boss

Big changes are being made at the top of Microsoft's gaming division.

CrashMania123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

MS knack for one upping bad news from other companies so soon afterwards is pretty astounding lol. Can't say I'm surprised though, this gen has been dreadful for the xbox brand.

Being replaced by an AI boss exec though, yikes.

123d ago Replies(8)
-Foxtrot123d ago

I always had this theory that they both wait to see if the other announces something bad so they can announce their bad thing, thus the two talking points bleed together enough to cause overall confusion online.

It then becomes just a big bad thing for the industry rather than a specific company. Wouldn't be surprised if Ubisoft were up next again at this point.

Eonjay123d ago

I have to agree with you. As if this decision was made today. Yeah right lol

darthv72123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

Huh... well that is sure interesting.

@crash, is it bad news though? I mean many here have said he needed to leave... now he and Bond are leaving. That should be good news to some.

Extermin8or3_123d ago

It's more the fact the person incharge of AI being taking over. That's a very deliberate decision.

Profchaos123d ago

Xbox fans have wanted Phil gone for a long time he's probably the least favourite exec of all time behind matrick purely because uber his leadership he decived fans and took the Xbox brand multiplatform

badz149123d ago

Indian takeover of Microsoft

PapaBop122d ago

Considering MS's obsession with ai, this is probably a demotion for her. Still, I enjoy poking fun at Spencer but ultimately it's sad to see him go, he's made mistakes for sure but I think he genuinely cared about the Xbox brand. Sharma seems very corporate to me and certainly not the Spencer replacement Xbox fans would have hoped for.

They are integrating everything into one platform (PC-like experience), that says it all. There is no longer a regular Xbox console, games are installed from Steam etc. on the next console/PC hybrid [if desired].

shinXseijuro241d ago

If the rog costs over 1000k with the tax and shipping included to Canadian consumers , what will the hybrid Xbox / pc cost ? If I were to go fully pc next gen I wouldn’t want to be locked behind an ecosystem after putting over 1000k out for the console/pc/hybrid . It’s already off to a bad start

shadowfax33240d ago

the screen itself was key factor for Xbox ally x final retail price..the console wont have it.

but even if it did cost 1000$, if it can play new PC games in high settings then price is kinda justified.

shadowfax33240d ago

Eonjay241d ago

If it cost that much if better be upgradable otherwise it won't have the biggest advantages of either PC (upgradeability) or console (price/performance).

DarXyde241d ago

And this is the point I don't think Microsoft understands. Investing in their ecosystem after 2025 doesn't make sense to me. People playing on console are going to look at this price and scoff. It is probably also too late to make an ultra-powerful console: visual fidelity and frame rates are really in a good spot right now. With next generation platforms, no one should really be expecting anything astronomical. That will take serious power and the hardware to do that is simply not practical, especially in this economy with this US president.

Launching this thing has exclusively one benefit: You can play PlayStation and PC-exclusive games on Xbox (assuming it really does allow for Steam). But even then, why would any spend this much on static hardware?

I don't get this direction at all. Maybe they really do have pressure to get that 30% profit margin. If that's the case, I wouldn't count on them cutting down the price of hardware and selling it at a steep loss by allowing games on other platforms. But hey, they're the trillion-dollar company, so I might be just be talking about something I don't understand.

gold_drake240d ago

love how confident they are in their absolute idiocy

dveio240d ago

A console primarily is a choice by budget. And people have

• different budgets and
• only even want to spend different budgets

I think it's a bad business choice them leaving the console business.

And in turn a good business choice from Sony to keep building a classic home console with PS6. (Which I highly doubt won't even exceed nor even touch PS5 Pro's release price.)

When they bought Zenimax and ActivisionBlizzardKing, they should have upped their Xbox support program to 100bn and spend the rest of it for building studios & creating new games, giving their developers freedom & full creative control.

But they hit the roof at 75bn. This was it.

And then went to maximize profits by 30% starting Fall 2023, according to Bloomberg, and put their bets only on "Call of Duty in Gamepass will do".

I can already picture their next premium Xbox failing at a 90:10 chance.

Dark-soul240d ago

Not budged, if i want i can buy pc for 10k , but i prefer consoles, because games are better optimized on consoles and more cozy to sit in couch and play on huge 2 meter tv and have dolby atmos setup + ps5 controller is cool + nostalgia = i will always play on consoles

dveio240d ago

"Not budged, if i want i can buy pc for 10k“

Yeah. That's my second point above, like "or only even want to spend a specific budget".

But console gaming, no matter the direction of people's reasons, is a budget choice.

There's been a market for "a gaming box cheaper than a top gaming PC" for almost 40 years now.

And it will continue to exist.

Miraak82 240d ago

Optimized doesn't really mean better or the best version or experience you can have though . I'm ready to get into PC gaming again soon as I really don't want to play most new games on my base PS5, having to choose between gfx and performance is such a drag as choosing either/or is a hindered experience and I've felt it for some time now . I could waste money on a Pro or timegate myself till the ps6 comes out but I think I'm gonna step into the future now.

I'm like the complete opposite of you as my console setup is like a PC setup with a 27 monitor , gamer chair , big desk , headset and even have a KB hooked up to my ps5 .it's so hard to play competitive and mmo games on a big screen lol.

jwillj2k4240d ago

Console gaming is absolutely not just a budget choice. We want the exclusive games, better experience and to support the brands we like. Budgets do come into the picture but this is the same for every industry, including PC’s. This is why “budget gaming pc’s” with similar prices never sell like ps/nintendo.

Jin_Sakai240d ago

Another Xbox console will be DOA. Just stick to making games and leave the hardware behind. Xbox is over.
