Why Visuals Should Never be the Focus

With the improvement of graphics and technical achievements, it's important to remember what role visuals should play in the gaming experience.

it should be the focus when the scope of the game is to be cinematic... then its up to the story to seal the deal. not every game is going to be the gears uncharted deadspace TloU "wow the gameplay is fun" kinda game. if thats all you want, youre not gonna find Just that on PS4. its gonna have variety. the heavy rain, the order, beyond2souls have a market too ya know, and that market is going to be satisfied, also with variety. some may not ba as good as
others. if every game were to be better than the next we would all be having a hands-free orgasm from playing gears4 and uncharted4.

the truth is the bar has been set high last gen, and not every new IP or next installment is going to be better than the next. were gonna have some great titles, but we just cant demand the next best thing everytime, no matter how great weve had it in the past. but we do know for certain that what we got was good, so sometimes were gonna have to be happy with just more or less of the same thing. i know PS exclusives like Uncharted and X1 like Gears are great games. and theyll probably be some of the best this gen, we just cant compare them to Gears1 and Uncharted2 all the time. we have to accept them for what they are and what theyre trying to do; not what they were, bc they Were some of the best of all time. FF hasnt been as good as FF7 (by the vast majority of fans), nor halo as good as Halo2 etc.

gangsta_red4094d ago

"...we have to accept them for what they are and what theyre trying to do..."

But what if they're even failing at what they are trying to do. Should we give games a pass because it "tried" to be a good game?

I just can't get behind that. If a game is boring, no content, stale gameplay and nothing more than a pretty face then it should be judged accordingly. Not given free passes because it's a new IP, it's the way it is because it was the developer's vision or judged solely on what comes is in the package.

If the bar was set high last gen then there should be so many examples on what set that bar and how to reach those and set new ones for the developer. Prettier graphics is only one check off to being a next gen game, I need to see more of what to do in these games that I know off top couldn't be possible on last gen systems.

PoSTedUP4094d ago (Edited 4094d ago )

i agree. and every game is going to get different marks. The order did what it had to do, it couldve been better, but it did what it wanted. not everyone is going to be a fan of that type of game, especially when there are so many amazing games and in more appealing genres. it took a big risk with the QTEs/TPS and Cinematic effect. games are art, and one form of it may not appeal to another. but there is a market for this game, thats why it will sell well. Haze got bad reviews and sold bad because it was a s*** game in its entirety. very few people thought it was even average. The Order tho, is something that went out of the norm. it wasnt suppose to have a million weapons, side quests like an RPG, run through level after level like uncharted etc. it was a game built to do specifically what it did for an audience that appreciated thoes kinda games. yeah when you compare the content and length and specific gameplay to other games it is lack luster, but it had a decent sized budget in the double-digit-millions to do exactly what it did, and i think they nailed it. people know what theyre getting into when they buy it, and apparently they have a taste for that kind of game. not everything has to compete with the top dogs, and not everything that does is promised to be a success. nothing more to discuss.

Spotie4094d ago (Edited 4094d ago )

But what if it succeeds at what it tried to do, but everybody is too busy talking about what it DIDN'T do?

Seriously, the primary knocks against this game literally point to it having succeeded at being highly cinematic. That makes NO sense. I'm gonna review the next Call of Duty and pan it for being a crappy racing game.

Revolver_X_4093d ago

Its funny you speak of game mechanics being advanced, but lack the intellect as to give an example. Truth is mechanics are pretty much tapping the ceiling. You can only do so much with a controller. You'd have a more weighted argument if your complaints were over AI, which is what really needs to advance this gen. The Last of Us is arguably the best game last gen. Mechanically it was Uncharted without climbing. It had a flawless UI, truth, but the story and graphics was the pillar of the experience.

Calling The Order boring shows, of course, you haven't actually played it. Just call it like it is. The games too short for your taste. Because in all honesty, the gunplay is excellent. Nothing innovative, but it is smooth and responsive. While the game wont garner excellent scores, I'm fine with calling it a 7. Lets just stop pretending you actually want to give constructive criticism. You've been a professional smoke blower since you started that "X" numbered account.

gangsta_red4093d ago

@Revolver_X_

If I knew what to evolve I would be a million dollar designer. I'm not, I couldn't tell you right now while I'm at my desk working, but what i can tell you is what this game does do, they do not do it well at all.

"Truth is mechanics are pretty much tapping the ceiling."

Who says? New ideas are being born everyday. You really think that there is no where to go from the standard mechanics we have now?

It doesn't show my lack of intellect, it just shows your extreme lack of imagination and you just willing to lay down and accept anything forced down your throat.

"Calling The Order boring shows, of course, you haven't actually played it. Just call it like it is."

And here we go...anyone who doesn't like the game of course hasn't played it. Lets start criticizing the person and calling them names and claiming they bring nothing to the conversation. That just tells me that YOU haven't played it all you want to do is give it a high score.

Lets all just forgive the poor gameplay, how this game doesn't let you run during some events in order to drag out a scene, or sneak around in the garden to not attract any attention but then shoot everyone in the Lord Hasting's house once inside. How Vampires played no role or wasn't even talked about or mentioned after the warehouse burning scene.

How about the cheap use of throwing a bunch of red coats at you in the sewer on your way to save Tesla as some sort of final level and then the final boss being a huge QTE fest that required no skill at all.

But yea, of course you'll come up with more excuses, call me names, claim I have other accounts and everything else to make your opinion of the game more valid than mine.

I gave more examples and opinions of the actual game than you did. And yet I'm the one who's never played it?

ziggurcat4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

"And here we go...anyone who doesn't like the game of course hasn't played it."

... you haven't... so what are you basing your invalid "opinion" on?

"what i can tell you is what this game does do, they do not do it well at all."

based on what? your experience of the game?

"Lets all just forgive the poor gameplay..."

how would you know it's poor?

"How about the cheap use of throwing a bunch of red coats at you in the sewer on your way to save Tesla..."

cheap use, how?

"But yea, of course you'll come up with more excuses... to make your opinion of the game more valid than mine"

your opinion is not even close to being valid. don't sit there, and try to pass off vitriol, and unsubstantiated hatred as "opinion." his opinion is actually valid because he's *actually played the game*.

They shouldn't? Guess I'll trade my PS4 then and stick with my last gen system. Hmm, I should probably trade that one in too.. Sorry games media, I just didn't know!

Timesplitter144094d ago (Edited 4094d ago )

Visuals are important. They contribute to making games fun.

But visuals and cutting-edge graphics are two different things. Visuals are the aesthetic value of a game. Don't Starve, for instance, has better visuals than Crysis 3

StrayaKNT4094d ago

Every game that focuses more on visuals than gameplay ends up being mediocre. I love a game with amazing visuals but I would prefer the developers get the gameplay right and make the game fun before caring about how it looks. That's just my opinion though.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose12d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE12d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername11d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy12d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde12d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8612d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8612d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300012d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle12d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
