Why PS3 games install

TalkPlayStation.com: The Official Playstation Magazine (August issue) has the reasoning as to why a certain amount of Playstation 3 games require an install. Its because its quicker to read the game data from the hard drive rather than the Blu-Ray disc. This also means shorter loading times during gameplay.

Chief software architect at Eutechnyx, Dr Andrew Perella says:

"The biggest benefit of loading data from hard drive as opposed to Blue-ray is that the seek times are lower. Games that make use of lot of user customisations are hit hard by this as the developer cannot know ahead of time what will need to be loaded"

I bet your now thinking 'does that mean every game will be installed to the hard drive', the answer is no. Look at Call of Duty 4 and Uncharted Drake's Fortune, they didn't require an install and ran fantastically well."

unless you make a collection of your games, like i know some do, there is no reason to NOT delete a game you will never play again.

I have a 60GB and i just deleted the games i will never play again!

I have around 3-4 games saved i might never delete. One i dont own but might play again:
MLB The Show
MGS4
COD
Burnout
Warhawk
Rock Band
GT5P
Uncharted
GTA4
Bad Company
HVB

I also have
280 songs
13 demos
15 videos
50-60 pics

I still have 23GB of space left! If i want i can upgrade my harddrive to 120GB for around 100bucks and i would be set for the entire life of my PS3. 4me personaly

What im saying is

If you want to play or buy everything then good 4ya. Your daddy must love you.

With the PS3 having a higher average aged user/buyer many of these ppl will not be buying every game that comes out! Blueray movies are 30 fukn bucks!

anyway this is "open zone"

i just used up some space with the new Burnout update! Im about to play it

eat it xbutts

ELite_Ghost6546d ago

are u kidding 100$ for 120 gigs?

you can buy 250gigs for 85$ if you live in canada

im sure there's tigerdirect.com for americans...

Blu-ray Reads inside out
DVD Reads outside in

so thats one of the reasons its quicker to install.

So blame Xbox 2 using DVD 9 for the Install/Holdback's

AceLuby6546d ago

But a blu-ray disc has upwards of 50GB of data compared to ~10 on a standard DVD. Just on size alone you can see that the more data on a disc the longer it will take to find that data.

Think of it like this...

You have a file you want to find. In a file cabinet w/ a single drawer it wouldn't take very long to find. In a file cabinet w/ 500 drawers it would take significantly longer.

Tempist6546d ago

Over all it's a good thing that there are developers out there willing to say that yeah, it's a pain in the ass now, but it's getting better and we're getting cleaver with how to get around things.

SixTwoTwo6546d ago (Edited 6546d ago )

Uncharted doesn't install to your hard drive. The only load time the game has is when you load a saved game file. Proof that load times can be nearly eliminated without needing a hard drive install.

chaosatom6546d ago (Edited 6546d ago )

and other developers don't share their technology.

If only the people can learn from Uncharted, then we can go somewhere.

JsonHenry6546d ago

As a PC gamer first and foremost, fear not my PS3 brethren! Installs only take a few minutes and increase system performance versus playing straight off of the drive!

AngryBot6546d ago

It is simply a fact that loading from harddrive is FASTER than ANY DISC, including DVD.

Lost oddysey and Mass effect has tremendously high loading times. They are on DVD.

With a harddrive, you can eliminate most of this. Its simple really. Harddrive = luxury

Installing = better and more stable games

I feel sorry for the 360 camp as it does not come with standard HDD. PS3 = luxury.

Guwapo776546d ago

This article isn't about seek times it is about data transfer. It has been long known BD x 2 that is found in the PS3 doesn't transfer data at a high rate. If I remember correctly it is not faster than a DVD x 16 player. But the one thing it does have is a constant rate of transfer unlike DVD players that are varibable speeds.

But this isn't an issue thanks to the HDD and Sony knew this from the beginning hence HDD in all systems standard.

As for Uncharted...yeah it was cool but if you run through the level too fast you'll encounter massive slow down while the next area loads. I'm sure this can be modified to where that doesn't happen at all.

Btw, you can also speed up load times by changing to a 7200rpm HDD.

Lifendz6546d ago

and installs were a worry of the past. I have more than enough space to accomodate installs and never have to feel crunched by certain games. I'd advise every PS3 owner to upgrade their HDD.

Close_Second6546d ago

Bit of an over simplification. Your filing cabinet statement assumes that when searching for data that the PS3 is doing a sequential read of the entire disc (i.e. looking in the first drawer, then moving onto the second and third, etc).

I doubt very much any PS3 games search for data this way and that they would use an indexing method that would allow any search to go directly to the right file in the right filing cabinet drawer.

The reason why games on the PS3 or PC install content is for faster retrieval of information of disc. Only solid state memory beats the transfer speeds of HDD but HDD totally eclipses DVD/Blu-Ray in terms of seek and retrieval speeds. My opinion is that PS3 owners should be given the option to install any game content and if they don't wish to install then they need to put up with longer load times.

IdleLeeSiuLung6546d ago

The problem with Blu-Ray is it was premature technology. The data transfer and seek time speed is slow compared to the amount of data needed in "High Defitionition" gaming.

A cache is therefore needed on the hard drive. It is a limitation, but not impossible to solve.

Hard drive install is a pain, since now suddenly the 40GB hard drive will not have enough space and I don't want to buy another drive. The upside is less noise from the optical disc and less wear and tear. Disc Read Error on the 360 anyone?

glad that the game i get dont need installation, except for the Live arcade but i can DL'it and play some orange box to kill sometime till the download done and yeah thats the only wait time i get after i buy an arcade game not an actual game disc

AceLuby6546d ago

What does that have to do w/ anything? If you're so good w/ your 360 why are you trolling PS3 threads?

Pornlord6546d ago

Well I'd rather have a game install and MGS, than no install and nothing.

See, I can be a fanboy for no reason too.

This article told us nothing new at all. You can't even play some of the future PS3 exclusives on 360 because of the size. Unless you go multi disk, you're boned. Or you could be like me, and play both systems and have the best games out at all time, no matter what system they are for.

On topic: Installs are a good thing. They are figuring out how to get around it, but honestly, there will be some failed attempts at that IMO. They are installing games because it's the best way to get the data processed quick enough not to miss data.

THUNDERMARE6546d ago

I'm wondering every time when Xbox fanboy said that, I'm assume that the PS3 can plan game out of DVD since it can plan PS2 games, so I'm assume that PS3 can also plan HD game out of DVD as well. In a sense, we dont need install if the game is in DVD??

Btw, I think the instant camo shift in MGS4 (or a dry out cloth in uncharted) is something unique only to the PS3 . Can anyone confirm this?

Kyur4ThePain6546d ago

"The biggest benefit of loading data from hard drive as opposed to Blue-ray is that the seek times are lower."

Reading from a hard drive is faster than ANY disc format, not just Blu-Ray. And memory is faster than a hard drive. Whoo-hoo. Thanks, Captain Obvious.
But yeah, nice try.

Fishy Fingers6546d ago (Edited 6546d ago )

I think he's trying to explain it in laymans terms, not everyone knows the different read speeds of storage formats.

Edit: LOL That's fair enough :)

Kyur4ThePain6546d ago

Yeah, I understand that.
It's just that they should have spoken to disc formats in general.
Excuse my attitude, I'm having a p!ssy day.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle44d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7753d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga53d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199252d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga52d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box53d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion52d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7253d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7552d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit52d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14953d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7753d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
