Sony Doubles Down on Games

Steve Peterson for alistdaily writes:

Sony is promising big things for future profits, looking to boost them to over $4 billion by the end of FY 2017, according to CEO Kaz Hirai's three-year plan. Hirai plans to focus on devices, music, pictures, and games in order to do this, which (not coincidentally) are the best-performing areas for the company – outside of its financial services, which are little-known outside of Japan but which have consistently delivered billions in profits over the last decade.

If that means more JRPGS and AAA exclusive from first party then its awesome.

I keep forgetting Level 5 still have an unannounced RPG game for the PS4. Awesome. I really hope its Dark Cloud 3. It would be the best thing ever.

Relientk774103d ago

I can't wait to hear what Level 5 have planned

if it's Dark Cloud 3 or Ni no Kuni 2, I am going to be flipping out in a good way

Snookies124103d ago

I honestly kinda hope to see a new franchise from them, personally. I love new JRPG's... It's always so exciting exploring a new RPG world you know nothing about.

MrSec844103d ago

Dark Chronicle was re-trademarked last year, maybe it's that.

A lot of people seem to think Level 5 will announce a new White Knight Chronicles at E3 this year.

Letthewookiewin4103d ago

you get + 1 perception and + 1 wisdom (sorry been playing old RPGs lately) for a great post.

i honestly think they should hang on to their TV and Mobile market for now and cut out smaller stuff first like cameras and overly priced headsets and $1300 friggin MP3 players... then see how they do. you never know when something new might come along that they can benifit from and use differently in the mobile andTV market; PlayStation and videogames arent future proof, TVs and mobile Are. i dont wanna see them go All In on videogames and then the market gets smaller as these crappy mobile games become more popular.

hanging onto TVs at least they have options in the future: even tho PS is profitable now, what if it isnt in the future?? then you have even less to bank on and in an even tighter position wheras: if PS becomes less profitable youll have the chance to double down on TVs and/or mobile instead because they are future proof. they should wait it out and see how things play out with taking small steps first bc they can easyily misjudge the future and compition, and future compition.

if they are really going to go through with this, they should own the gaming scene. but they still have compitition that can do them damage so they really have to execute this perfectly. im talking balls-to-the-wall securing deals that get COD on every device through PSnow and other huge franchises. they need a plan that says: "all of this, all of this is OURS", and if they dont i think they should re-evaluate the situation and take it a little at a time.

communicate better in devisions. cut down on everything that isnt profitable like the small stuff and put it towards TVs or Mobile. one thing at a time. and cut down on marketing that hasnt been doing them any good like for tennis and wheel of fortune and spread it elsewere. sony sucks at marketing, they also probably need better Actuarys.

THC CELL4103d ago

Xperia owner awesome phone spec with remote play n attachment, Can't see em ridding the phone as they have smart watch and glasses coming etc if they was to sell it off I hope google buy em

PoSTedUP4103d ago (Edited 4103d ago )

they have too much expensive good s*** that is overpriced and poorly marketed. a waste. they easily could have kept up with samsung. they could have cut down on TV lines to compete with high-end and lower-end if they kept a good balance of both instead of having too much of everything that doesnt compete with neither. the truth is they juggle too much at once and dont communicate until its too late it seems.

they should (imo) put mobile and TVs on hold by cutting out all the junk inbetween them first and wait it out untill they can focus on competing by getting their strategy in order with resources and marketing; taking what they conserve and using it to boost what they salvage that has potential to compete.

if they are really serious about gaming they need to also start focusing on the handheld market and help keeping it alive. yes, try and work with Nintendo to keep it alive instead of trying to milk it untill its a lifeless corpse, think about the future and prevent it from continuing to decline (unless you can prove it is inevitable). becuse the handheld market is and can still be a big part of gaming, and very important if sony is going to focus mainly on gaming.

plmkoh4103d ago

Disagree, I'd rather they cut mobile and just focus on high end devices instead. Seems like the Sony brand has been poisoned because they tried to pursue Samsung with mid-low end electronics and not what they've always been good at.

That $1300 "MP3 player", is a good start and they already have record sales in that category to prove it.

PoSTedUP4103d ago

....the $1200 MP3 player isnt even out yet. and even sony "isnt sure of the demand for it". so idk what youre talking about. looks like a bad move to me.

Sonys biggest problem is their electronics and the fact that they are too expensive compared to samsung and others to compete. cut down on high-end imo. their whole electronics devision needs a re-evaluation and an overhaul. mobile is important for them not only for what they are trying to do but for the future in general, they just need to market it better and get it to countrys that matter; and promote it better. only one big cell company in US (Tmobile) sells sonys phone directly, that right there is a problem in itself, and one that could be fixed.

plmkoh4103d ago

IDK what you're talking about because the Walkman has been out in China and Japan for over a month now with demand "exceeding expectations".

If you've followed any news of Sony, it's low end products that have made significant losses not high end. In fact the majority of the $1.7 billion write down of Xperia was due to the mid-low range products. So why double down on the weakest part of Sony's ventures?

PoSTedUP4103d ago (Edited 4103d ago )

i have as much as i can. have any links to the record sales?

i know that high end phones are doing good (reason to keep some mobile) but they are spinning of their audio and video divisions just like their TV division because they need to work on that. low-mid end TVs are important too, same thing with audio ((and Ipod), sony should try and comepte with the larger markets too. and when i said double down on mobile and TV it was hypothetical, say if something were to happen to their main devisions in the future, they would still have large important divisions they could improve and work with. they are certaintly on a good track atm and it seems they are fo using on their weaker links like TVs and audio etcthey shouldnt get rid of them competely, just work on them for now because they are still important .

I feel like Sony could really make profit off the Xperia. It's a great phone and just needs to be advertised more. On paper it has the best specs making it faster, longer battery life, and better overall.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8518d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele18d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk18d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit17d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg17d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10117d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle31d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit31d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog31d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog31d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad31d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_31d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage31d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda31d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
