Opinion: The Last Guardian risks All-Round Disappointment

The Last Guardian has been in development for as long as some younger gamers have been able to hold a controller, and with financial investment from Sony and emotional investment from fans, it's very possible it could be an all-round disappointment if it ever actually releases.

So we are done bashing The Order 1886 and start bashing The Last Guardian.

I am pretty sure if the game gets a trailer this year or the next. We will see hundreds of articles saying 'Why The Last Guardian will be disappointing' .

matgrowcott3985d ago

You have a funny definition of bashing.

The point is that if the emotional investment is so high, and the financial investment is so high, how can anybody but the most die-hard fans be happy?

Which I think is a more nuanced point, and one more worthy of discussion, than "bashing" properly covers.

DarkOcelet3985d ago

Ok then, i apologize. My bad, it just seems nowadays many sites are just looking for clicks so they pick a hot topic and say it will be disappointing.

I was a die hard fan of Duke Nukem and i hated what Gearbox did to Forever. I hated everything about the game.

But here, we are talking about Team ICO . Those who made two masterpieces. And know how to make a great game, so will it disappoint? Maybe, but i dont think so.

Again, i apologize for being so hasty :)

matgrowcott3985d ago

I don't think the game's quality is up for debate, to be fair. It'll be a great game, but there are indie titles which have similar themes and ideas, even familiar graphical styles. The more power indies get, the less fresh anything Team Ico puts out will feel.

And that's not to say they'll be in the same ballpark, but with ever-dwindling originality, I can't help but feel The Last Guardian will struggle to make its mark.

It may sell well on hype and expectation alone, but it'll never live up to years of development, excitement and financial investment, and the longer it takes, the harder it'll become for Sony to wow people.

Thanks for taking a second look.

JoGam3985d ago (Edited 3985d ago )

Like I said before and I'll say it again. PS4 exclusives will ALWAYS be bashed. WHY? FEAR! Look at it this way. Have you ever seen a owner of a Playstation console bash an exclusive of that system over and over again to the point you wonder why in the hell do they own a playstation console? NEVER! Those who bash continuously are fanboys showing their fear. Its a self defense tactic they use to help justify not owning a Playstation. In other words to help them sleep better at night.

My opinion.

Crimzon3985d ago

The quality of the game might actually be up for debate considering Famito Ueda left Team ICO what, two years ago now? He was the mastermind behind ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, and his leaving the studio could negatively impact the game.

Of course, nobody knows for sure so it's only open to speculation right now, but given the troubled development the game has endured and the brains behind Team ICO deciding to leave, I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for being sceptical.

I just hope that the vision for the game remains intact and that the actual 'core' of the game was complete when he signed off, because what was shown in the original trailer was incredibly powerful. I think it speaks volumes that people were able to get so attached to that giant creature in what, two or three minutes of footage? Has to be one of the best reveals for a game I've ever seen.

averagejoe263985d ago

Not sure how much emotional investment someone could have for a game they know nothing about.

The only way you'd be upset is if you've been hyping this game up since it's announcement... And if you have been then it's your own fault if it doesn't meet your magical expectations.

jznrpg3985d ago

I doubt many people besides "diehard" gamers know anything about the game

jznrpg3985d ago

@Crimzon Ueda is still working on the game, he just isnt an official Sony employee anymore and he has talked about the game a little last year stating he will work on it until it is done. I assume he has a contract with Sony to finish it.

Honestly they will keep "bashing" them. Why? Because these types of articles get the most clicks = more money.

Dark

You said "So we are done bashing The Order 1886 and start bashing The Last Guardian."

Apple to orange comparison. The Last Guardian, for all we know, don't even exist or canned already. How is one random site posting an opinion piece on a vaporware considered "now you all are attacking another Sony exclusive"?

Also, if you feel so strongly about the negative of it, then why you approved this article in the first place?

As far as I'm concern, you are part of the problem and somehow you are the first person complaining about it. Go figure.

No seriously, just click on the two michinist icons on the right corner of the picture of the arricle and you can see the approval history and report pertaining to any article.

I approved after he stated his comment to me btw :/

getrektedmate3985d ago (Edited 3985d ago )

How did you find out i approved this?

Man-Eee-Faces3985d ago

@dark

Fair enough. I see that you did approved it after you spoken with the submitter. But going by you first post of just bashing and criticism on everyone is out to get and downplay any PS4 titles like it is standard practice is just uncalled for. At least read the article before Making instinct reactive comments will be my best advice.

There are games that will be bash, AC Unity with its choppy and broken animation, Halo MCC with its matchmaking, DC with missing standard features and broken online play at launch and delayed PSN plus version, to,Titan fall being only MP,and only 792p, to Ryse with its QTE and repetitive gameplay, to Evolve with its day one paid DLC, to The Orders with its length and no MP to Too much Cut Scenes. These are things that will be said and articles had been made and continue to be made about all,of these games.

I am just tire of one group blaming another group of purposely out to destroy their beloved game on their system of choice when if you look beyond the wall or blind goggles, you will see that this is common practices pertaining to many games, exclusive or not. It just so happen The Order is release in a few days so if course you will see more articles pertaining to it and unfortunately, many of them are pertaining to things that some PS4 owners don't want to hear or have a hard time in believing it can be true.

"I am just tire of one group blaming another group of purposely out to destroy their beloved game on their system of choice when if you look beyond the wall or blind goggles, you will see that this is common practices pertaining to many games, exclusive or not..."

Your last paragraph hit the nail right on the head. very well said.

We will. But unlike 1886, which is a new IP and has maintained a good production cycle, TLG is becoming more like HL3. Seeing as though the last 2 were masterpieces, it was going to be put put under a microscope anyway.

There are some games that either have issues or huge expectations that may deserve scrutiny. TLG is one of those. 1886 is NOT!

OrangePowerz3985d ago (Edited 3985d ago )

TLG is also a new IP :)

The extremely long production cycle on that one does add a lot of additional expectations to it and I don't think that there is really any possibility for it to overcome that in the media. I was very excited when it was announced. Because of that very long wait my expectations are rather low, so if it should ever come out and it's a good game I would be happy with that. In that way it probably would hold up much better against my expectations as it would if it came out a few years after the announcement.

At least we have seen something of it compared to HL3 :D I still remember Valve saying how much faster it will be to change to an episodic model.

I'm still waiting for this game, hopefully at E3

the_dark_one3985d ago

Soooo is has started. i thought they wore going to bash bloodborne first but noooo lets go straight to The last guargian

Software_Lover3985d ago

I say unless Sony shows/announces something, all websites and N4G "articles" need to just give up on reporting about it. IMHO it's as good as dead. If they show something at a show then good for them.

WizzroSupreme3985d ago

If The Last Guardian's a great game in the fashion of Shadow of the Colossus or Ico, then the $60 price tag will be worth it to me, but Sony ought to think about making it a budget title.

The Wii U got something right selling $50-40 games like Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. If it's a small game, then sell it like one and fans will thank you for it.

OrangePowerz3985d ago

But they are cheaper to develop. A budget title is something that didn't cost a huge amount of money.

That thing is what 10 years or longer in development? It must have cost so far a considerable amount of money to make. Even assuming that it would be a smaller game in scope (their other two games aren't) it already cost a lot so why loose more on it by selling it cheap? The target audience would be rather niche and people that played Ico and/or Shadow of the Colossus.

If it ever comes out I doubt it will be profitable and actually more of a fan service than anything else. Would it sell more units as a budget title instead of a normal full price game? It's not a known IP, sequel or similar so your average Joe won't know what it is and only see that the price is a budget title and think that it won't be very good.

Please release the ICO games on PC...

Inverno354d ago

I would love the remasters and Last Guardian on PC. Insta buy if I could get em on GOG. Just knowing I would have access to these games without them being tied to an aging console I'd buy em up again in a heartbeat.

Profchaos354d ago

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88767d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183765d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie765d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
