Why have people stopped playing Destiny?

MWEB GameZone writes: "Guardians have protected their Destiny for six months now, but it seems many are abandoning their duty for more exciting adventures. Remember when Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, said "Destiny is a $500 million gamble for Activision," it seems the dice is not rolling the way Activision hoped.

There's another solution. Call the real MMO crowd, launch Destiny on PC.

plut0nash4118d ago

They ran out of stuff to do. Simple as that.

HanCilliers4118d ago

Indeed, but what's the secret to say WoW, people still play it after a decade

DarkOcelet4118d ago

They didnt run out of stuff to do lol ^^

ArchangelMike4118d ago

At least WOW has 'proper' lore behind it. Which means that you can actually 'role-play'.

Baka-akaB4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

Wow didnt wait as many months to add free content once everywhile , or even patches .

Even if oviously it's sub based thus better funded , and even if obviously people are still kinda forced to follow each new expansion or risk facing obsolescence ...

Destiny is a game i had a blast with , and i'll come back every now and then with friends to have some coop fun .

However we wont be there doing the same stuff daily . I have other genre of gaming , like fighting games , that makes such a grind more palate and exciting .

We got here an expansion that is too thin in content to last months

freshslicepizza4118d ago

i haven't played world of warcraft but i assume it has better mechanisms in place to keep the addiction of playing. if destiny is such a grind to get anywhere and bungie keeps plugging the holes to move up quicker on the character class then those mechanics are poorly thought out. destiny also seems to be designed to prevent the player from advancing too far unless they purchase new content.

also how alive is destiny? this could bore the player as well if that world feels empty once they are in it. i think it's just a case of people growing bored of the game because there really isn't much to do or explore. building your character also seems limited.

Ares84HU4118d ago

That is pretty much it. There is nothing to do anymore just the same old thing. And also, they made it ridiculously hard to complete the End of Crota raid and the Nightfall mission. Nightfall is really hard and the rewards are crap. This week we went in to do the nightfall with two 32 and a 30 character and we died like we where lvl 10.

I used to play every day. At least 5 hours a day (two in the morning 3 at night.) now I just play the nightfalls once a week. Don't even care about the raids anymore.

Sevir4118d ago

The latest investment call said Destiny has 15 million active players... Maybe the author and a few of his closest friends stopped playing but just because he stopped doesn't mean the rest of that 15 million stopped playing

jriquelme_paraguay4118d ago

tired of make the same things, in the same places, again and again...

Gazondaily4118d ago

Have they stopped playing though? I don't see any figures to back up the headline. But then again, it wouldn't surprise me because gameplay really is repetitive. There DEFINITELY needs to be more variety in the game, which for the most part, feels like one massive grind apart from the raids.

The numbers will surge back up once the new DLC is out.

HanCilliers4118d ago

It will surge, only to drop again

Gazondaily4118d ago

That's to be expected really. I wonder what their long term plans are. Just more series of DLC I assume. By then the formula will wear thin though unless these DLC's are really good.

BC_Master_Haze4118d ago

Considering the average seasons pass is 50 dollar's Activision wanted to raise that 40% by adding two separate packs, expansion 1+2 for 35 dollars and 3+4 for a grand total of 70 dollars of thin DLC.

Baka-akaB4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

Last i checked yeah , Destiny retains a much bigger base than expected .

It has never been described , at least not yet , as running out of steam and hemorrageing people . We just expected that given the massive lack of new content

CorndogBurglar4118d ago

With the long wait between DLC i can totally see people falling off.

However, i havent noticed it. The tower is still full of people and the planets always have people that show up to help with Event Missions. Most of my friends list are people playing Destiny also.

So i havent seen any effects from this supposed Destiny exodus that people are claiming is happening.

GameSpawn4118d ago

This. There has been no shortage of people playing online. Matchmaking in the normal strikes also does not take very long (at least in my experience). The 6v6 Crucible takes a little time to match, but not more than a minute or so tops.

As far as people showing up for Public events, most are probably using the public event tracker website as every public event I have been part of has always had at least 1-2 21+ people show up just as it starts - most of the time they are already camping around the area waiting for the event.

wsoutlaw874118d ago

Ya I haven't seen any evidence of less people playing. Post that you want a raid team and you will get 6 responses in like a minute. There just needs to be way more content. Everyone who plays can only really do a nightfall and tge 2 raids.

He paid billions for Starfield. This should be the real story.

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

anast628d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

Should've thought that one out buddy, lol.

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_628d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981628d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140628d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85628d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj628d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman628d ago (Edited 628d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake627d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn627d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg627d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07627d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

627d ago
Knightofelemia627d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom627d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac627d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake627d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark627d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde627d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125627d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
