Games have basic, huge accessibility problems (that we celebrate)

Polygon:
People need to be able to play a game before they can begin to digest or critique it.

While gaming has made some incredible strides the past few years, it's rare to find one that I genuinely, passionately love that I can also share with my non-gaming friends and family. That basic fact goes a long way to explaining why gaming is such an insular pursuit.

I recently watched one such friend play through Journey. As she explored the world, probing, testing and observing, I was content to sit back and let her take it in on her own.

That experience isn't one many tend to have. Most of us take it upon ourselves to show the people we love how special video games can be. We often forget that when we play, we bring years and sometimes decades of fluency in this medium. It's rare that someone without that background can pick up a controller and play without guidance. Books are easy to share because everyone learns to read. Not everyone spends the hours necessary to learn how to play what we consider to be "core" games.

I still need to play Journey. I have heard good things

It's one of the best games I've played. The soundtrack fits perfectly.

Waiting for the PS4 version so I can play it again, since I sold my PS3...

What are non gaming friends? :)

Also Journey is awesome.

Accessibility has turned me off from many games, simplifying something exceptional to the point of not being able to recognize it. Gaming is already in the gutter mostly, so i don't want to see more franchises destroyed due to chasing a uninterested demogtaphic.

Well there needs to be games for all points of the spectrum, and what's fun for the casual or beginner will most likely be mind numbingly simple/boring to the avid enthusiast. You don't take a kid who just learned checkers and toss him in a pro chess match and expect him to get it and have fun, and you can't expect a chess pro to have fun against that kid in a checkers match. people have their own version of fun, it's be a shame if everything were only one kind of fun :/

Let me summarize this for you.

1: Non gaming player can't get into game due to requiring a certain level of thought process and hand-eye coordnation

2: Publishers blame that fact on the game being too hard or that the actions aren't simplified e.g. One button combat, Press X to do everything, only using the face buttons instead of making full use of the controller.

3. Sequel gets simplified and turns many of its prior fans off of it becuase certain traits that made the game unique and interesting no longer exist. Also the non gaming players may not even be interested in it due to their gaming friends not buying it.

4. Franchise suffers overall and future titles if they come out turn into reboots and financial safety nets.

On the article, there are many disabled game players out there some don't even have hands or feet and can still manage. What it fails to realize is that, if your a cripple and you KNOW you can't play games, you do something else with your life.

Also in the article, "Gone Home requires a relativaly powerful computer."

The Best Alien Games (To Play After Watching Alien: Earth)

An opinion piece on the best Alien games. From arcade Alien vs Predator action to a terrifying Xenomorph stalker, these are the best Alien video games starring Ridley Scott’s chestbursting, acid-blooded nightmare.

Got a soft spot for AvP (2010) but solid list nonetheless.

My favorite Aliens game also, having the three campaigns to play was great. Scaling walls as an alien waiting to ambush anyone that came too close.

Only played a little of the horde mode but was still fun.

Aliens Fireteam Elite was my GotY in 2021, single player was kinda bad but playing that game 3 player with friends was so good and really challenging on higher difficulties

Massive shout out to Aliens Vs predator 2 (2001), a dialup lag filled fun mess in multiplayer and 3 great campaigns

I played through most of the PS4 version of the game but stopped because another game came out. I bought it last year for PC with the intention of using the VR mod but haven't gotten around to setting it up. I am glad I waited.

Great game, even better in VR. A little drawn out by the end, but I hope we see CA do something a little different with the sequel.

Sweet. I also rebought this game on Steam for the purpose of VR. I'll have to give it another shot w full immersive controls. I had only tried it out briefly before.

It's funny this was never officially released at retail as a VR game, bc it feels so perfect for it!
