Why do Video Games Cost $60?

Gaming is an expensive hobby, everyone knows that. The question is, why does it have to be? The makers of movies, music, and books have all realized that if something is sold at a cheaper price, people will buy more of it. You can get brand new, quality forms of those medias at a fraction of the cost of new games. Why should gaming be any different?

aehm maybe because games dont generate any side revenues except the sales price, (mmo monthly fees not counted).

While movies etc can make revenues on several sectors, cinema, dvd, paytv, and last but not least mainstream tv. Plus additional revenues out of soundtracks, tshirts, fanarticles.

Just wait a lil longer its starting atm also for games, miniatures tabletop games, tradecards etc are coming in the game lately and hopefully will sometime generate some second level revenue streams for the publishers so the games might get cheaper.

Howlie6527d ago

I don't totally agree, games are now being designed for other sponsors to advertise in real time in game. This can create a huge amount of income for the publishers. As well as aftermarket products and merchandise.

Even if a game that cost $20M to make only sells 500,000 at the new release price ($60) that still results in a revenue of $30M, and, after subtracting the $20M it cost to make, a profit of $10M.

If after the price drops to $30 the game sells another 500,000 then there's another $15M in pure profit!

So a game with just 1M total sales that cost $20M to make can create $45M in revenue, for a total profit of $25M!

Systems should be cheaper or Games should be cheaper. Cheaper the entry the more you can spend in the offset, but the more expensive the entry and the less the games the more you'll potentially go back and buy.

I think if certain games were cheaper they'd be more valuable in the consumers and reviewers eyes. Conan, for instance, at 60 bucks isn't a game anyone would buy. At 30, yes. It's sure bet and a great game.

I think companies need to stop and evaluate how valuable their games really are in the market place.

Conan at 60 and God of War at 60, which are you going to choose? GOW of course, but it doesn't mean Conan is a bad game, just not worth 60 bucks. I think this needs to be addressed cause so many people are afraid to take risk at 60 dollar price tags.

I am glad I do cause games like Conan, Untold Legends and Lair are all amazing games in their own rite.

Kleptic6526d ago

totally agree...

the price is fixed...yet the quality between each game is not...freaking Conflict: Denied Ops released at $60 retail...that makes it very obvious that some things are simply screwed up in this industry...

Poor Xbots

Poor Xbots, I dont know why people would buy a game still on a last gen format drive. Poor Xbots, PS3 games are worth those 60$ since it's made on a Bluray disc.

I already bought a console, hdtv and now I have to pay higher price for games too.

xbox people also have to pay for live.

donator6527d ago (Edited 6527d ago )

I don't understand why, in multi-platform games, the PC version is $50 whereas the console versions are $60. If what the developers are saying is true, that the development costs are up, shouldn't the PC version also cost $60?

Or perhaps they're using the next-gen console excuse to make some extra bucks.

The new COD World at War or whatever shouldn't have that high of a development cost, but they'll still charge $60 bucks. Is that fair?

iamtehpwn6527d ago

Costs are becoming overwhelming nowadays.
=| $60 is a kick in the nuts.
I now only buy games if I'm sure they're going be the most Epic Experience for a game I can get at the time.

Sexius Maximus6527d ago

I remember back in the golden age of gaming, they cost anywhere from $50-$80 per game. I forked over $80 on BOTH Shining in the Darkness and Phantasy Star 4. People will easily spend $16 for a 2 hour movie and expensive popcorn, but they have a hard time dropping $60 on a game that will last for 60+ hours. OBVIOUSLY cheaper is better...just don't buy shhity games, and the great are well worth IMHO.

funkeystu6527d ago

I think companies generally loose money on the price of a console (at least at the time of release) with the intention of making the money back on game sales, which need to be increased to account for this. I suppose that's why PC games tend to be cheaper (no need to offset the cost of the hardware)

Montrealien6526d ago (Edited 6526d ago )

I paid 89$ Cnd before taxes for Chrono Trigger on my snes over ten years ago. Why are we always complaining about useless things? Cartridges where damn expensive 50-60 dollars is fine and normal. I paid 40$ for Dig Dug in 86, DIG DUG! And inflation is a big factor in this also...

Sexius Maximus nailed it on the button.

barom6526d ago

60$ is actually nothing compared to the amount of work put in to make a game. That said I tend to wait for the price to drop before I buy anything.

Oh and another way to look at it is "you can afford to pay for an HDTV and the console and you don't have another 10$ for the game you want?"

Bubble Buddy6526d ago

I think many games should be $50 max. However, amazing games like MGS4, GeOW, Super Smash Bros (It is $50), I don't mind paying $60. However games like Assassin's Creed, ANY SPORT GAME coming out every year with basically same features, movie-based games, almost everything EA Makes :P should be worth $50 and maybe even less.

Organic_Chemistry6526d ago

I did the exact same thing as you: bought a new tv etc. $50 would be good, but I remember paying $120 for Lunar: Silvar Star Story for the PSone back in the day so considering inflation, games have become more cheap.

It's also good that we can trade in games. But if companies want to do gamers a favour, they should make the trade-in values fair. An example could be to pay full price ($60) for a game, then when you bring it back within, say a month, you still get the full price, if you want to trade it for a new game, pay $5 or so. I tried to trade in GTA4 the first week it came out, due to boredom, and EBgames (Gamestop) offered me $40 for it...what a joke huh?

Because they want more money and it IS a business they are running. Add to the fact of big releases like MGS4, GTA4, Halo 3 costing MILLIONS on top of MILLIONS to make and you see why the price has been hiked up. It's just not the big franchise games either it's new IP's like Heavenly Sword and BIOSHOCK that are costing millions to make. Simply put they need to sell at higher prices and sell more copies to recoup the cost of developing.

Though i do believe smaller games should have a lesser price (movie based game, hail to the chimp, lower budget games basically) should NOT be 60 bones. Those games in my opinion should be coming out at the price of 40 to 50 dollars.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman34d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
