SCEE Explains 2.40 Error, Sony Will Replace Bricked Machines

As you now know, Sony has presented us with firmware update 2.41, which is now free of any serious bugs and doesn't have the nasty capability of damaging systems like the original 2.40 update. However, even though we're good to go now, some are still wondering: what happened?

What about the elusive 60gb launch ones, Sony? Like the one I have. I have updated the hdd twice now and the warranty is long gone but I'd love some reassurance that I'd be able to get the full b/c one back if ever a problem did come up.

It's only fair.

Silogon6500d ago

So, 3 disagrees and no one mans up to why? funny. So you think people who bought a 600 dollar system shouldn't be entitled to keep that system should a problem incur?

That's funny. I'll see you when your systems bust at the seams.

Charmers6500d ago

I imagine people disagree simply because no company should be expected to do repairs to a product outside of warranty, they do so as a matter of "good faith" but you shouldn't expect it. As for firmware bricking your console, I can't say this for certain but I imagine there is a clause that states you "download and use this firmware at your own risk" so if the firmware bricks your PS3 Sony is under no obligation to repair it because you agreed to those terms. I am not saying it is right or wrong, I am just saying that is how it is.

If you are unable to use a product under those terms then I suggest you sell your console and move on. There is no point buying an xbox 360 either because they have a similar clause with updates.

juuken6500d ago

Obviously you didn't read the terms of service.

How about you *call* Sony instead of whining on this site like a little jackass?

Silogon6500d ago (Edited 6500d ago )

I'm not saying for free, man. I'm saying I'd be glad to pay 150 to 200 or even 300 "half the cost of the system" to obtain my original PS3 with full B/C.

That's what I am saying.

Edit to below:

That's what you get for assuming, I suppose. Maybe you shouldn't next time. I'm not faulting Sony for anything and didn't even fault them for the update. Check my post here and you'll see that.

I am simply stating that I paid 600 for a system at launch, with full B/C and am not expecting them to fix it for free. I'd be willing to pay 300 of the cost just to have my system "should it ever need repaired" fixed.

That's it. It's not asking too much, sorry. Either fix the system or offer us the same features as the system I've got in another model. A newer one.

I've got card readers, 4 usb ports and full B/C and if you think me sending my system in and getting back 1 with 2 usb ports, no card reader and no b/c support is cool. Then you're idiots.

JBaby3436500d ago

However I don't actually believe this is your problem because pretty much any post I read from you is in some form trying to bash Sony or cast them in a negative light. It seems that instead of praising them for promptly taking the old update down to limit the possibility of freezing more consoles, quickly getting to the root of the problem and fixing it, then replacing any consoles that did die, you would rather nitpick the only negative thing you could find. I'm glad they didn't do an MS and say "we still don't know what's wrong but we'll keep selling the product anyway to anyone that will keep on buying it". I didn't want to bring MS into this but it serves as a good example. No one planned to mess up PS3's but it happened and they are rectifying it as best they can. You need to grow up and lay off.

By the way I didn't disagree with you but I can understand how others did.

juuken6500d ago (Edited 6500d ago )

When my console does have an issue "SILLY"gon, I'll be sure to call Sony first instead of visiting sites. In fact, you should be on the damn phone instead of annoying people around here.

You are an idiota.

And JBaby is right. They're trying to solve the problems. It's not like they're sitting on their asses drinking coffee.

Cut them some slack.

DrWan6500d ago

he doesn't even have a ps3

SpecialSauce6500d ago

i wouldn't want to lose all my sweeeeeet features.

At least sony are replacing and at least it was a software problem and not a hardware, we can easily fix software (in this case it took days) but microsoft cant fix there 30% fail rate which as wev seen over the last few days is even in there elite, this has been what, 4 years now? for shame micro$$$oft

DrWan6499d ago

lol he send me a PM, i blocke this silogon already i will never have to read a single damn thing from him, everyone do the same please

Either way, it's a good thing they pulled the update as soon as such reports started to pop up. I'll download 2.41 as soon as I get home from work.

donator6500d ago (Edited 6500d ago )

I wonder if I can send in my PS3 and get a new one. Mine works perfectly fine, I didn't download 2.4 yet... but I want the new one that uses less power. I'm trying to save on energy bills.

Unless they just fix the hard drive of course.

Adamalicious6500d ago

I don't work for Sony or anything, but I'm going to go with No.

Lifendz6500d ago

and good for us. I cringe at the thought of anything happening to my 60gb sku PS3. For one because my data isn't backed up and two because I know that replacing a 60gb can be a real pain.

fusionboxer6499d ago

I would hate for anything to happen to my 60gb ps3 now that the warranty is expired and they're no longer in circulation.

niall776500d ago

all they need is a reformated harddrive

oh well

Azures6500d ago

that's probably what they do, but many don't understand that as a fix.

SL1M DADDY6500d ago

The admin data is not on the drive, it is on internal memory. The XMB does not run off the HDD, just so you know.

Polluted6500d ago

That's a good point SL1M, but from what I hear, formatting the HD was fixing the issue for people that were having trouble with the update. Weird.
Anyway, I imagine they'll just ship off new consoles to anyone who got a bricked one, then repair all the bricks they receive, slap some new shells on them and send them out to people who send PS3's in for repair in the future. They can speed up turn around time in the repair center that way so everyone wins.

gunnerforlife6500d ago

thank god it hasent happened 2 me:D

Isaac6500d ago

When will I be able to download the FW update 2.41 from my PC? The playstation website still points to FW 2.36.

Adamalicious6500d ago

It's not on the website yet, but check back at this link (if you're in the US). It's usually up a little while after it goes online for the PS3 - sometimes like 24 hrs.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk774d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga4d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer19924d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga4d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman3d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger4d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box4d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion3d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv724d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent754d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit4d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz1494d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning774d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev: Big Studios Are 'Forced' to Hire Like Factories

Former Naughty Dog artist Gabriel Betancourt explains why the "sweet spot" for game teams is under 200 people and how AAA "factories" kill creativity.

There’s definitely some truth to this. When teams get too large, coordination starts to outweigh creativity—layers of approval, risk aversion, and tight deadlines can turn bold ideas into “safe” ones. Keeping a team under ~200 people sounds ideal for maintaining clear communication and a shared vision. That said, massive AAA projects also come with huge technical demands and expectations, so scaling up isn’t always avoidable. The real challenge is figuring out how to keep that small-team creativity alive inside big studio structures.

DarXyde4d ago

More than that, it's logistically untenable. Inevitably, when teams get too large, how do you keep tabs on accountability? I suspect this massive team size is a consequence of the perfectionism streak Naughty Dog has.

I wish we could have so many people working on something and it turns out great because I'm all for collaboration in spirit - the problem is too many people as part of the larger team and smaller units. Suppose for example that you have too many people in the art department; you will very often come up against fiercely competing visions for how things should look. That competitive vision will cause friction between team members, team doesn't work as a unit, the back and forth can further delay parts that the other departments are waiting for, etc etc.

A 200-person team says, to me, that we need to scale back game development. Even if it means we go back to PS2 era costs and scale, why not? Those games are still great fun, the budgets were in check, and you could literally break the 200-man team into like 10 20-man teams working on different projects.
