Terraria vs Minecraft

With news of Terraria coming to the Wii U and 3DS, as well as the anticipated Terraria 1.3 patch, SheAttack decides to take a fresh look at the game. Today, Terraria looks like a completely different than it did when it was released back in 2011; not to mention it continually got a lot of flack for being the "2D Minecraft clone".

Is Terraria really just a 2D Minecraft clone, or is it something more?

I enjoy both of these games regularly and they are much more different than people realize. Terraria is a much more complex game to me and takes more time to get used to compared to Minecraft and I like the bosses, especially in hard mode.

Terraria is for gamers, Minecraft is for socializing and the arts lol.

Battle of the overrated, boring, repetitive games.

The bubble speaks for itself. Move along people. You don't even have to waste your time disagreeing.

You haven't played Terraria. Minecraft could get a bit frustrating and boring at times.. I enjoyed both and I'm still playing Minecraft once in a while, Terraria got kinda boring after you become OP, but it's fun when you have friends to play with and decide to start fresh and do roles, or time-limit large world PVP or make up something else. I'm not the creative type, so once I get the platinum , I probably wouldn't play them unless it's competitively.

Hmmm... *Looks at Steam* I seem to have put over 120 hours into my PC version of Terraria alone. Not counting my Vita port. No telling how many hours I've put into Minecraft, considering I got it in Alpha, and checked out most of the major updates with a new file.

So... Nope? Can't say either of these are boring. Minecraft I can see some people not liking, because it doesn't have a set focus. Terraria however? Heck no, that game has incredible depth and is very goal oriented.

Got Terraria for $6 during a PS sale and it's probably the best $6 I've ever spent on a game.. Liked it a lot. It is so much more centered on Survival/Bossing than even hardmode Minecraft and ton of content too, I'd say moreso than Minecraft. I put in over 100 hours to get to a point where there's nothing to do, not to mention the entire time I was playing with my brother... but we were going for the platinum and got bored on the last two trophies(Armors and Craft stations).

But to each his own, I think Terraria is more centered towards fighting, and Minecraft is more centered towards building. They are far from similar.. only thing that is the same is that you can mine, craft, and build..however, mechanics are different but also quite similar and different cups of tea. But everything else is elements that are in a lot of games.

I like starbound more that terraria but stands heavily uncompleted. Has a lot of potential but like lot of early access games, I dont think its going to be completed anytime soon unfortunately.

Writing this piece right as I'm starting to get into Starbound. The Winter Update has me hooked this time!

Its fun! but a bit bugged as you reach the endgame. I was unable to do the last few story missions due to planets in those coordinates not appearing, but nonetheless its fun and I think will best terraria eventually. Mods make the game way better and add things the game desperately needed. But as I said before, its updating BEYOND slowly and has poor communication with the community ( at least it was the last time I played it)

EDIT: I just saw the winter update. I haven't played it so im excited to see the new changes.

All I can say is Minecraft and Hololens will be the next Wii sports of gaming.

DigitalRaptor4138d ago (Edited 4138d ago )

So... like Wii Sports... relevant for a few years until the media clock on to the gimmick, the fickle causal gamers get bored and move on. Meanwhile, the core gamers keep playing Minecraft not in its gimped AR form, but enhanced form with Oculus Rift.

It's dangerous and foolish to let your expectations get the better of you.

I used to buy cheap games thinking I’d play them later, but I always ended up returning to my favorites. Now I skip the deals unless I know I’ll play the game soon.

This is very true, my nephews grew up on these two games and whenever I introduce them a AAA game whether old or new, it's like seeing an alien try to make sense of it and then quickly lose interest in it.

Can’t really expect a 8 year old Roblox kid to go buy resident evil 9 lol

Gaming trends are so weird to me now. Like, I’m old school and games were consumed essentially how movies were. You play through a title and look forward to the sequel or other things that came out. Now, that is so not the norm.
