Resident Evil HD is a remake of the original. Big difference between Remaster and Remake and Reboot.

Remake... Making the same game but with the graphics of the console its built on (MGS: Twin Snakes\ Resident Evil REmake)

Remaster.. Same game, Higher Resolution and Frame Rate with a small amount of improvements.

Reboot... Same name of the game but an entirely different story or outcome.

I dont want Crash, Dino Crisis Remastered, I want them to be Remaked, same gameplay with a few tweaks but with a graphics of a PS4 game.

Remake = Old game, New engine. Significant graphical enhancements.

Remaster = Old game, old or new engine but same overall graphical style and level of detail. Major improvements consisting mostly of increased resolution and cleaned up textures.

Reboot = Basically a revival of an old franchise that hasn't been used in a long time. (XCom, Doom 3, Bionic Commando, etc)

Port = Square Enix's favorite thing. Old game, old engine, new console. No changes.

Remaster is really just a port, remake is something else. Unless you want to start calling every pc version of a multiplat a remaster...

Dasteru4136d ago (Edited 4136d ago )

Calling it a remaster isn't really any worse than the current "Definitive Edition" tag. If the game is released on the PC around the same time as the console versions then i wouldn't call it any of the above. It would just be another original version. If it is released more than a year later, then i would usually call it a port (assuming the same engine and the graphics are still relatively the same.) If it is a significant visual improvement but still within the same art style (GTAV) then it could possibly be considered a remaster.

On pc most games are capable of better fidelity than the consoles, and often support resolutions as high as 4k.

Dasteru4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

Yes, that is obvious and it changes nothing. Resolution has nothing to do with graphics. It simply cleans up the image to better show what is already there.

A port by definition has no major changes. It is just a recode of a game to make it work on a different platform. A remaster has to have visual enhancements. PC games are not remasters as the higher resolutions already exist in the original code. When a game is developed for any platform, it is created on a Windows based PC at extremely high resolutions and then compressed or scaled back to work on the intended platform. All the original high resolution data is retained. Releasing it on PC afterwards just opens up the higher quality content for use. There is no actual remastering involved in the release. In the case of GTAV, they have actually created new textures for the current gen and PC releases, which is why is can be classified as a remaster.

even new textures don't make it a remaster, otherwise skyrim on PC is a remaster. Pc versions don't simply have higher resolutions but any good port has some extra visual features not on console. I would say you need to use a new engine to call it a remaster.

Bring on Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Blasto, and MediEvil

Dasteru4136d ago

I would sell my right nut for a remake of LoD.

Bad article, RE HD is a remaster of the 2002 Gamecube remake.

CocoWolfie4136d ago

i couldnt believe what i read XD

kevnb4136d ago

Let's call a spade a spade, it's a port.

_-EDMIX-_4136d ago

Agreed. Beat it 3 times already. As a huge fan of the game, I've played all versions.

This is a port! LMFAO! Yes, the 3D backgrounds like really, really great, I would still say it over all is a port rather then a "remake".

The only thing redone was the backgrounds, but its very much a well done port, not enough to call it a "remake".

Gracing store shelves? It's digital though. And this is originally from 2002.

So if more ps1 games were going to be remade, it would have been back then.

Strange article.

Resident Evil HD Remaster receives a new AI-enhanced Texture Pack, improves more than 1600 textures

DSOGaming writes: "These past few weeks have been really interesting as we've seen some truly amazing AI-enhanced texture packs for older games. Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 9, Half-Life, Max Payne, Morrowind and Doom are just a few of the games that got new high-quality textures that were produced via AI Neural Networks and today, modder ‘Shiryu’ released a new AI-enhanced Texture Pack for Resident Evil HD Remaster."

I'm not really convinced by this AI Neural Networks thing using this as an example. I know you can't ask for much when it comes to pre-rendered stuff, but you can barely see a difference with most of these. At its worst, there's an imperceptible difference. At its best, you can see it cleared up some jaggies and looks a liiiittle less blurry.

I will download it of course, but based on the screenshots, this doesn't improve things a whole lot.

It does make a difference. Mods in general are just awesome. They've helped make so many of my games look better. The HD reworked texture mods and other mods for The Witcher 3, for example, made it look way better.

This may be small improvements now but it could be huge for gaming's future. AI with a ryzen based chip programmed to use the neural network to determine to the metal coding might allow programmers to focus on high level coding. That means games get done really fast and the budget goes into things like story and production. Once you have an ai that understands its given hardware it can decide how to run the code to maximize frames and resolution. AI will revolutionize gaming.
