Will Xbox Games Ever Be Playable On Windows?

Microsoft is prepping to change the software landscape with Windows 10, and one of the main focal points of the upcoming operating system is that Microsoft has plans to focus on gaming this time around and the Xbox is going to play a part in it all.

This would be suicide for the Xbox brand. Is there something I am not understanding here?

KarmaV124170d ago (Edited 4170d ago )

It would all be under one store. Meaning if they add an Xbox Store onto PC then it would just be extra money. Obviously there is a lot more to go on in between that, not just simply adding a game to a steam like store. That brings it to the other problem, they will have to compete with steam, a free service.
I don't know man. I guess we will find out tomorrow!

TheFirstClassic4170d ago

The xbox one wouldn't sell as well if all its exclusives were on pc. I would be happy though.

No_Limit4170d ago (Edited 4170d ago )

What you will see will be small games like indies and Minecraft that can be cross play abetween PC, Windows phones, and XB1 under the Windows 10 moniker for each platform. There is no coincident that an Windows 10 app is coming in an update to XB1 and MS recently spent 2 billion on minecraft.

If you think about it, games like Halo 5 and Forza 6 would never work on Windows on PC because there are so many configuration out there and having XB1 games to try to run on something like a surface Pro is almost impossible. MS is in the business to sell OS by having games being compatible on as many devices as possible and games that don't require much processing muscle like Minecraft and indie is what I think we will be seeing.

But I do secretly hoping for a new Age of Empire and a real sequel to Zoo Tycoon though on windows PC.

No limit, read up on Windows 10 some more. Their plan is to make it so developers only need to code once across all platforms. That's exactly what Microsoft's CEO said in the investors conference call. So all games made on DX12 will work on any Window 10 device. That includes PC, tablet, laptops and Xbox.

uth114170d ago

And the games are optimized for Xbox One hardware. How well would they run on nVidia, for instance? What about dual-core, quad-core processors?

Would devs have to start worrying about optimizing for all these things? Would they stop doing deep-optimization for Xbox specifically?

If PC can run Xbox version, would devs stop developing PC-specific versions, with their higher graphical fidelity, to save costs?

I see more downside than upside here.

That is crazy. More likely to have more PC games crossing over, including those win8 apps

dcbronco4170d ago

Actually I think this will be the opposite of killing Xbox. I believe they will bring everything under the Xbox umbrella relating to gaming. Xbox is a brand and in reality every PC is an Xbox since Xbox is a Direct X box and it is what PCs have always used. Now that Windows 10 will bring a code once model to game development, all gaming through Direct X should fall under Microsoft's gaming brand.

And hopefully that will include all DX12 PC games going forward will be available on Xbox One and vise versa. This would be huge for Xbox since there are obvious differences between console and PC gamers that precludes cannibalizing each other for the most part. Add a one price for all platforms pricing model and everyone benefits. Plus Microsoft would be offering something Steam can't with multiple platforms.

smoothdude4170d ago

I agree this would not kill the Xbox brand. I mean imagine PC games also moving to Xbox or buying the game once but getting a license for both systems. Microsoft's gaming environment extends beyond just the Xbox, and PC gaming is dominated by Windows.

SteamPowered4170d ago

With Steam Game-Stream though, you can have as many platforms as you want. I play 1080p games on my 10 year old laptop. If you can buy a cheap laptop and stream any game from your Game Rig, why would you buy an X1?
The Best we can hope for is more X1 games coming to Pc. I think Ryse and Dead Rising 3 let the genie out of the bottle. Now gamers are willing to wait for a PC port.

smoothdude4170d ago

@Steampowered, there are alot of people who prefer to play on a console. If my friends are playing on XBone, I would want to pick one up to play with them. Basic business theory could be used to show that these are two different types of gamers and two different markets. Its like saying saying the Ford Dealership next to the Mercedes dealership would kill off the Mercedes sales, but in actual fact they are targeted to two separate demographics.

Though I would love to see more people playing PC games!!

WeAreLegion4170d ago

I think streaming from one device to the other could work out. I'm sure it would be locked to Windows 10, but that would help Windows 10 sales.

As far as playing Xbox One games on PC without an Xbox One, that doesn't make any fiscal sense.

Moldiver4170d ago

NO. But you will see a lot more PC games on Xbox. and cross play on games with windows with xbox.Mark my words.

Dogswithguns4170d ago

Good idea, I would be playing more on PC instead.. oh wait?!

Codewow4170d ago

There's no telling what would happen to the Xbox brand if the games were playable on PC.

You can't really say it would take a huge hit if they did this. So many people defend their choice by saying, "Ease of access" which I understand.
There's also the convenience of being able to have a console in your room when you can't have a computer (typically only goes for kids) It also applies to people who don't want to spend their time part hunting or paying for a great computer.
There are so many reasons why a console is an easier system to go with for certain people.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing52d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9252d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit52d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing52d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9252d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
