Alienware Alpha review | Digital Foundry

Eurogamer:
"When Valve decided to postpone its Steam Machines initiative, its hardware partners were left in a difficult position - hold back on their living room-friendly PCs and wait for the final SteamOS and controller, or repackage their offerings as more traditional Windows-orientated PCs? Alienware went for the latter with its innovative Alpha console/PC hybrid, going to the trouble of engineering its own console-style user interface in order to make the machine fully operable without mouse and keyboard. The bolt-on UI is a bit of a kludge to be honest - and that's a shame, as the hardware design story here is quite remarkable."

Alienware’s Steam Machine Could be the Living Room PC You Always Wanted

Mike Stubbs: "The Steam OS is perhaps the most important addition. While big picture mode always did a serviceable job, this is a much more refined experience, with more detailed menus and options. Switching between games in your library is done with just a couple of button presses and load times seem fairly low. The layout of the games library also makes it easy to find the game you want, a dramatic improvement over the tiny text you get in the desktop version of Steam."

Alienware Alpha: How To Upgrade Its CPU, RAM, and Hard Drive

Daniel Perez "We’ve covered the Alienware Alpha quite a bit, including a formal review. Several of us on staff have been enjoying this micro PC for a number of reasons. But if you purchased the lower-end model which features an Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM, you’re going to want to update that bad boy, especially if you now find yourself with a large Steam library of processor-heavy games."

Literally exactly what I'd say lol! Each console is absolutely worth owning.

Myself, I currently play with ps4, ps3 and the vita. I just love plus offering on the ps3, yakuza 4 and my huge backlog of games, Catherine, xcom and access to the metal gear collection I want to play before Mgs V. The Vita is actually awesome if you have been downloading plus games for a while, muramasa rebirth, dragons crown, uncharted, ninja gaiden, gravity rush... let alone epic retail games like persona and final fantasy x HD!

I've got a wiiu, epic fun on Mario kart and xenoblade looks insanely good... and of course, Zelda! My 3DS, kinda just sat there... but like you say, bravely Second looks great!

All in all, gamers have it really good! I need to buy an Xbox One for Quantum Break too! Have a 45k achievement account I've not logged into for 2 years lol.

DarkOcelet4116d ago

I have 65k and still rising :)

Sacrifices have to be made.. there's like no time to devote to every single one of those.

That said, a part of me always wants another platform, no matter what I already own.

I could never be content with one platform.

Alienware? lol, just build your own and enjoy the best gaming platform the way it was meant to be enjoyed

thorstein4116d ago

I was going to reply something similar. I think the price point on the Alienware Alpha isn't too bad. However, it has an i3...which isn't awful, but with Star Citizen on the horizon, I don't know that it will be screen melting.

If I buy something like the Alpha, I want it to be relevant for more than 6 months.

Exies74116d ago

I just got a 3DS, and I couldn't be happier with it. Heck, I'm not even mad a new one is coming out soon. I'll buy that one, too.

Such a great handheld.

Magicite4116d ago

In fact there are only 6 consoles available.

By ''etc etc etc'' at the end of WiiU you mean - nothing else?

DarkOcelet4116d ago

No i mean in 2015... its hard to keep track of all the games on all consoles.

They have a huge collection of games in 2015 but i pick the ones that are getting the most attention so that people know it does have great games in 2015. But i am pretty sure you get the idea.

I will make it even easier choose which ever one you prefer.

Exies74116d ago

Indeed, pick the one that makes you happiest. Not the opinion of random people on the internet.

All the consoles have great content and specific gamers will gravitate towards different ones, because they fulfill differing gamer needs.

InTheLab4116d ago

So you can play a game that's only partially downloaded on pc? No?

thelwebb1004116d ago

The only games worth buying on PS4 this year is Bloodborne, UC4, The Wild, and Deep Down. I could care less about a ton of indies.

Sincere01214116d ago

Is that a list of all the broken and boring interactive movie type games coming to the ps4? Yaaawn. You must be a casual gamer and not have the skills to play any challenging and competitive games.
